My phone died last night, when the battery ran out of juice. Plugged it in to charge and nothing happened. I let it charge over night and it still won’t power on in any mode. When I hold the power button down, the screen has a line that flashes across it every second or so, but it never powers on. Do I have a dud? I have had the phone since it came out but this is especially the 1st time the battery has died fully on me. — Amy
Solution: Hi Amy. We have no idea what happened to your phone before noticing the problem but if it had been physically impacted or damaged, stop looking for a software fix and just send it in. there’s no amount of software hack that you can do for a hardware problem.
If the phone was never physically damaged or exposed to water, then the problem may lie somewhere else. Try to boot the phone to alternate modes first to see if you can turn it back on. If it remains unresponsive, send it in for repair or replacement.
Hi. Just wondering if you can help. I was trying to get voice activation working for Google on my Samsung S8 galaxy and downloaded the app Google Now launcher. This seems to have changed the set up of my phone. It then asked me to alter the home button to whizz thing, which I didn’t like and the only way to get it back was to reload the google now. However my main issue now is that I am receiving messages, texts, whatsapp, messenger etc and it notifies me, and has a note of it at the top of the screen. However, it doesn’t show it in the app (with a little number to show how many messages there are). I have been to the notifications in the settings, everything is turned on and working, is there something else to get the notification in the app back on? thanks for your help. — Catriona
Solution: Hi Catriona. We don’t think we understand your concern correctly here but if you want to change the settings of your notifications, the only way to do it is by going under Settings>Notifications. You can fine tune how each app receives and show notifications further but that’s it. If you’re missing a particular behavior of an app after switching to Google Now launcher, then we suggest that you simply go back to the previous launcher you’re used to. No two launchers work exactly the same so you’ll naturally encounter features and behaviors that’s absent from one but present in another.
If you want to go back to the previous launcher but want voice activation enabled, we suggest that you use Samsung’s S Voice app.
Saturday screen just went black and no LEDs flashing. However, not sure how managed to get it up and running within a minute. However today went black again and now phone not responding including all LEDs. Have followed all guide lines to get phone up an running but no luck. — Justin
Solution: Hi Justin. The only troubleshooting that we can suggest for you in this case is to try turning the phone to alternate modes. If the device remains unresponsive, your only other option is to send it in. There must be a hardware problem somewhere causing the issue.
Below are the steps to restart your phone to other boot modes:
Boot in Recovery mode:
- Charge the phone for at least 30 minutes.
- Press and then hold the Home and Volume UP keys, then press and hold the Power key.
- When the Samsung Galaxy S7 shows on the screen, release the Power key but continue holding the Home and Volume Up keys.
- When the Android logo shows, you may release both keys and leave the phone be for about 30 to 60 seconds.
- Using the Volume Down key, navigate through the options and highlight ‘wipe cache partition.’
- You can either wipe the cache partition or do a factory reset when in this mode.
Boot in Download Mode:
- Charge the phone for at least 30 minutes.
- Press and then hold the Home and Volume DOWN keys, then press and hold the Power key.
- When the Samsung Galaxy S7 shows on the screen, release the Power key but continue holding the Home and Volume DOWN keys.
- Wait until the Download screen appears.
- If you can boot the phone in download mode but not in other modes, that means that your only way out may be to flash a stock or custom firmware.
- Use Google to look for a guide on how to do it.
Boot in safe mode:
- Charge the phone for at least 30 minutes.
- Press and hold the Power button.
- Once the ‘Samsung Galaxy S7’ logo appears, release the Power key and immediately press and hold the Volume Down button.
- Continue holding the button until the phone finishes rebooting.
- Once you see the text “Safe mode” at the bottom left corner of the screen, release the Volume Down button.
- The only difference of safe mode from normal mode is that the former prevents third party apps from running. If you can boot the phone in safe mode but not in normal mode, uninstall all apps until the issue (that prevents you from booting normally) is eliminated.
Charging issue. With some cables/chargers my device vibrates when plugged in and starts charging. Then, a few seconds later, it shows that it is no longer charging and then vibrates again as it starts charging again. Over and over again. I have turned over to wireless charging in the meantime, but it’s very annoying and I can’t seem to figure out what the reason is or how to fix it. Thanks in advance! — David
Solution: Hi David. Your device’s charging port must be malfunctioning. This is one of the common reasons for charging issues plaguing all kinds of smartphones today. The everyday plugging and unplugging can sometimes wear out this component relatively easily, especially if you’re not careful, or if you insert the charger incorrectly. If you received the phone as part of your carrier’s subscription plan, be sure to send the phone to your carrier so it can be repaired or replaced. If you purchased it independently, contact Samsung instead.
In order to cover a possible software-related cause, make sure that you wipe the phone clean via factory reset. Here’s how:
- Create a backup of your important files such as photos, videos, contacts etc. You can use Smart Switch for this task.
- Turn off the device.
- Press and hold the Volume Up key and the Bixby key, then press and hold the Power key.
- When the Android logo displays, release all keys (‘Installing system update’ will show for about 30 – 60 seconds before showing the Android system recovery menu options).
- Press the Volume down key several times to highlight “wipe data / factory reset.
- Press Power button to select.
- Press the Volume down key until ‘Yes — delete all user data’ is highlighted.
- Press Power button to select and start the master reset.
- When the master reset is complete, “Reboot system now” is highlighted.
- Press the Power key to restart the device.
So when I bought this S8 had only 10% battery left. so I started to charge the phone and it restated and continued to charge it over night. In the morning my phone was dead, not even a flashing light, straight black screen, won’t start. not even hard reset etc.. what can it be? — Gerry
Solution: Hi Gerry. This can be a charger issue only so the first thing that you want to do is to try a known, working S8 charger. If that won’t fix the problem, there may be a hardware issue inside. This is an unheard of issue for a brand new phone so we assume you have a pre-owned one here. Make sure to tell the previous owner about it or the shop you got if from so you can either have the device refunded or fixed.
If the phone is a brand new one, consider doing our suggestion for Justin above. If the device won’t respond still and continues to remain dead, contact Samsung or your carrier for repair or replacement.
Please help. My S8 is stuck in an endless loop of trying to start itself. in the process it keeps vibrating. It is stuck on the “Samsung” screen, that’s all it says. I was trying to root the device however now it is unresponsive. This is very frustrating I need my phone working again a.s.a.p. I really appreciate your assistance, please help me. Thank you. — Leyla
Solution: Hi Leyla. Only advanced Android users root and flash their devices so you must be aware that any of these procedures can potentially lead to the problem you’re experiencing right now. To try and fix the issue, you should consider flashing a stock bootloader first. Below are the general steps on how to do this. The exact steps may vary depending on your phone model so be sure to look for good guides. The steps below are for demonstration purposes only and may not be the exact steps for your device.
- Look for the correct firmware for your phone model and download it. Make sure that select the right one. It should be the same exact firmware that ran previously on your device. We assume that you list down the firmware version somewhere. If you did not take note of it before, there’s a chance that you may pick the wrong one. As you may know now, using an incorrect firmware can cause complications so good luck with that.
- Let’s now say that you have identified the correct firmware. You then want to download it to your computer. The firmware file should have a bunch of files in it like AP_, BL_, CSC_, etc.
- Look for the file that starts with a label BL; this should be the corresponding bootloader file for this firmware. Once you’ve identified the bootloader file, copy it to your computer’s desktop or to any other folder that you can easily access.
- Proceed with the rest of the flashing procedure using the Odin program.
- In Odin, click on the BL tab and make sure to use the bootloader file you’ve identified earlier.
- Now, make sure that the “Device Added” status and its “ID:COM box” has turned blue before hitting the START button. This will initiate the flashing of your phone’s bootloader.
- Restart the phone once the procedure is finished.
If flashing the bootloader won’t fix the issue, try to fix the firmware instead. Again, you need to find a good guide on how to do this on your phone.
Hi. I have an S8 and it was receiving MMS messages fine from iPhones up to last week and it now tells me the message failed to download. It receives MMS from Android phones but don’t know about Windows phones. I’ve looked at the mobile data settings and APN and checked the settings were correct for my network EE. but I still can’t download the MMS. Can you help please? — Jo
Solution: Hi Jo. There’s a number of things that you should check to know what’s causing this problem. Below are steps that you must do:
- Restart the phone. Turn it off then wait for several seconds before turning it back on.
- Check if the device has good signals. There should be at least 2 signal bars to avoid interrupting internet connection.
- Ensure that mobile data is working. MMS service only works if your device is connected to the internet via your carrier’s network.
- Check if you can send and receive SMS or text message. Like mobile data, MMS may not work if SMS service is problematic. That’s an indication that there may be a network-related issue.
- A third party app may be causing the problem so you want to observe how MMS works when phone is booted to safe mode. Safe mode blocks third party apps and services. If the problem won’t occur while the phone is in safe mode, you can bet a third party app is to blame. Check the steps on how to do this procedure above.
- Try using another messaging app if the problem won’t go away.
- If all else fails, contact your carrier for direct assistance from them.
Hi. When I type a text the characters change for every message I send. Sometimes when I send an SMS I can type a whole paragraph before it changes to 2 messages and sometimes I might just type 5 words and it changes to 2 messages. I don’t really understand why the characters change so much. — Sian
Solution: Hi Sian. An issue like this doesn’t just happen out of the blue. You must have done something to cause it. Try to remember if you did something different like change some settings or install some apps or updates before noticing the problem. The change you introduced may be the cause of the issue so simply reverse it. For example, if you happen to install a new app prior to experiencing the trouble, try to uninstall it and see if that will fix it.
If nothing changes, try clearing the messaging app’s cache and data. Here’s how:
- Open the Settings menu either through your notification shade (drop-down) or through the Settings app in your app drawer.
- Navigate down to “Apps”. This may be renamed to something like Applications or Application Manager in OEM skinned versions of Android 7.0.
- Once in there, click on an application.
- You’ll now see a list of stuff that gives you information about the app, including Storage, Permissions, Memory Use, and more. These are all clickable items. You’ll want to click on Storage.
- You should now clearly see the Clear Data and Clear Cache buttons for the application.
When I plug the charger in the Samsung Galaxy phone indicates that the battery is 100% charged. However, when I remove the charger it is only receiving a 4% charge. No matter how long the charger is in. it is continually saying 100% as soon as I plug charger in. — Cindy
Solution: Hi Cindy. Android may not be reading the correct battery level on your phone. To try and fix it, you must recalibrate the battery. Here’s how:
- Use the phone by playing games or doing tasks to hasten power discharge, until the phone turns itself off.
- Turn the phone on again and let it turn itself off.
- Charge the phone without turning it back on.
- Wait until the battery says it fully charged to 100%
- Unplug the charger and turn the phone on.
- If the phone says it’s not 100% anymore, turn it off, plug the charger back in and wait until 100% charge is reached.
- Unplug the charger the turn the phone on again.
- Use the phone until you drain the battery down to 0.
- Repeat the cycle once.
If that won’t fix the problem, consider doing a factory reset. Check the steps above on how to do it.
Just got Galaxy 8+. When I try to open Facebook Messenger, it prompts me to download it, but then says another user on the device already has the beta version. So I can’t send or receive messages or participate in my Facebook groups. What to do? — Chris
Solution: Hi Chris. Does the prompt prevent you from downloading the app? If you can’t install Facebook Messenger at all, then it’s most probably installed already. What you need to do at this time is to simply clear its cache and data before you attempt to log in to it. In most cases, Facebook apps come already pre-installed in the device so all you need to do after unboxing the device is to simply update them. We don’t think we understand what you mean exactly by the line “… then says another user on the device already has the beta version” but if you continue to experience problems with said app, we suggest that you contact Facebook support. We don’t work for Facebook so our knowledge of this prompt or their product in general is not that extensive.
