How to fix a Galaxy S8 that drains battery faster and won’t charge

Hello Android fans! Welcome to another troubleshooting article for the #GalaxyS8 device. We come to provide you solutions for some of the common problems a lot of S8 owners now face with their S8 devices. The main issue we address in this post is about an S8 losing power faster and no longer charging. We also discuss other related issues so feel free to browse through the cases below.

Problem #1: How to fix a Galaxy S8 that drains battery faster and won’t charge

My Galaxy S8 is not holding a charge all day anymore. First off, let me say that I do not have the original charger, I know that’s a problem.  Right now, the phone is currently at 4% after being plugged up all night, and is currently plugged into my computer modem now (different charger)  and the battery percentage is decreasing instead of increasing. Can you help?

Solution: This kind of issue can happen for a number of possible reasons. Some of the common causes why a device may not hold a charge or drains battery faster includes the following:

  • too many apps running in the background
  • inefficient firmware coding
  • bad third party app
  • operating system bug
  • battery defect
  • Broken charging port
  • unknown hardware malfunction

Since there’s no direct way to know what the real reason for the problem is, you need to do a series of logical troubleshooting steps to narrow down the factors.

Apps

The most common reason why a relatively new Samsung Galaxy device loses battery power faster than expected is apps. If you’ve added plenty of apps to the system, some of them must be running in the background all the time, causing the constantly run and use resources. Social networking apps like Facebook and similar are notorious for being the number reasons for battery drain across all smartphone platforms. This is because these type of apps regularly communicate with remote computers over the internet to get new contents. The same is true to games or any other apps that need updated content every once in a while.

To check if you have an app issue, open the Battery usage utility tool under Settings > Device maintenance > Battery > Battery usage. Once Battery usage is selected, you’ll see a list of apps that’s been flagged by the tool to have consumed significant amount of power over a period of time. Use this list to get an idea which apps may be running all all the time or taking up power and to take necessary action to rectify the situation. If you noticed an app that you only use sparingly but remains on top of the list, it’s possibly doing a sloppy job at power management, or may even be a sign of something bad, like what malware or viruses normally do. Some developers may create apps meant to use a phone’s resources to do tasks you don’t necessarily know about, like mine cryptocurrency in the background. It’s up to you to determine whether or not the apps in the list are doing what you intend them to do or not. If you don’t think an app should be constantly running at all, try to remove it from the system and see what happens.

Use official Samsung Galaxy S8 charging accessories

While there are now excellent third party charging cables and adapters that you can use on your S8, it’s still highly recommended that you stick with the ones that came with the device. These accessories are ones tested and validated to work with your S8 and Samsung spent a lot of resources and effort in their research for it. Not using them is not just unwise but also puts your device at risk of getting damaged during charging. To see if you have charging issues with your accessories, try to get new ones or bring the phone to your local Samsung store. In there, try using the store’s official charging cable and adapter to top up the battery.

Android OS bug

Some battery drain issues are caused by an operating system bug. To check if that’s the case here, wipe the phone thru factory reset. Here’s how:

  1. Create a backup of your personal data.
  2. Turn off the device. This is important. If you can’t turn it off, you’ll never be able to boot to Recovery Mode. If you are not able to shut the device off regularly via the Power button, wait until the phone’s battery is drained. Then, charge the phone for 30 minutes before booting to Recovery Mode.
  3. Press and hold the Volume Up key and the Bixby key, then press and hold the Power key.
  4. When the green Android logo displays, release all keys (‘Installing system update’ will show for about 30 – 60 seconds before showing the Android system recovery menu options).
  5. Press the Volume down key several times to highlight ‘wipe data / factory reset’.
  6. Press Power button to select.
  7. Press the Volume down key until ‘Yes — delete all user data’ is highlighted.
  8. Press Power button to select and start the master reset.
  9. When the master reset is complete, ‘Reboot system now’ is highlighted.
  10. Press the Power key to restart the device.

Bad charging port

One of the common reasons why a Galaxy device may stop charging all of a sudden is a bad charging port. Most of the time, the common reasons for this includes water damage and physical damage in the system. Pins inside the port can sometimes become damaged or bent if you use incompatible third party charging cables. Try to use a magnifying tool to examine the charging port. If there’s dirt, lint, or residue, try to clean it with canned air. If there’s obvious damage like a visible bent or out-of-place metal pin inside, that means you have a hardware issue. Let Samsung repair the phone for you.

Problem #2: What to do if Galaxy S8 screen stays black and won’t turn on

Hi. I really need my phone this week. My phone is just making sounds when I turn it on and stuff like that and it’s LED indicator is working . But when I turn it on my phone just won’t display anything even the logo. is it a bug, error, or my screen is broken? It was working a moment ago. This is a Samsung S8. Please respond ASAP. Thanks!

Solution: Most probably, the problem has something to do with the screen. The phone is obviously not dead since it’s making a sound and the LED is being displayed. To check if the screen is prevented from working by an Android bug, try to boot the device either Recovery Mode or Download Mode.

How to boot a Galaxy S8 to Recovery Mode

  2. Press and hold the Volume Up key and the Bixby key, then press and hold the Power key.
  3. When the green Android logo displays, release all keys (‘Installing system update’ will show for about 30 – 60 seconds before showing the Android system recovery menu options).

How to boot a Galaxy S9 to Downlod Mode

  2. Press and hold the Volume Down key and the Bixby key, then press and hold the Power key.
  3. You’ll know if you’re on Download Mode when you see a screen that says “Downloading….”

Remember, if the screen works in any of these modes, that’s a clear sign that you have an Android OS issue. Be sure to factory reset the device in Recovery Mode to fix it.

If the screen stays dead or black, or if you can’t boot the device to any of these alternate boot modes, contact Samsung for support. Repair is most likely needed to fix it.

Problem #3: Galaxy S8 won’t charge or transfer files to PC

problem started with charging cord, saying to consider using factory cord. the problem evolved to now not being recognized when trying to transfwe files.i have master reset, changed cords, antried all usb ports, and keep getting unknown device.i have downloaded new drivers, and deleted from computer all exterior devices, and usb controllers, and let windows try and reinstall, and now get an error code that uploading driver failed.if i un hook and hook cord back up its back to the un known device in the control panel.i’m stumped.this is a one year old phone.

Solution: The signs you mentioned are consistent to that of a bad charging port problem. For this situation, you want to let Samsung check the hardware physically so they can advise you whether or not to repair or replace the phone.

Problem #4: Galaxy S8 stuck in Samsung logo screen, won’t boot up

Hi. I own a Samsung Galaxy S8. Someone gave it to me, but it didn’t work. I tampered with it, and got it to work perfectly. then I dropped it and it quit working again. I somehow got it to charge, and it worked, but when I tried to get it to sleep, it became unresponsive, then turned off, at 62%. I tried everything, but all I got was when I tried to turn it on, I get the “samsung galaxy S8” symbol, then it turns off. same thing with charging it. Could I please get help?

Solution: We don’t know the history of your device so we are mostly in the dark in this situation. We also don’t know how you tampered with it but if it involves flashing or rooting, consider bring all software information back to their defaults. Try doing a master reset first and see if that will help. If not, try to flash its firmware back to stock (the version that came with it from factory). If both these software solutions fail to fix the issue, then the problem is probably beyond your capacity to fix. Be sure get help from Samsung so they can do some digging further.
