Third-party applications–ones you download from the Play Store and install on your phone–have higher tendencies to crash than pre-installed apps. But it seems like some owners of the Samsung Galaxy S8 Plus are currently bugged by a problem involving Gmail that reportedly keeps on crashing for some reason. Gmail is one of the apps mandated by Google to come pre-installed on all Android devices so it’s actually embedded in the system and while there are circumstances wherein the problem is limited to the app, more often the issue will be on the firmware.

First off, I would assume that the firmware hasn’t been modified in any way because if you installed a custom ROM, it’s possible that you haven’t installed Gapps properly. Reverting back to the stock firmware will fix this issue. But for those who haven’t rooted nor flashed a custom ROM, rest assured that you can fix this problem using the basic troubleshooting methods. With all that being said, here’s what I suggest you do about this problem…

First Solution: Reset Gmail

By reset I mean clear its cache and data. For app-related issues, this method is the most effective provided the problem is limited to the app. At this point, we really don’t know the reason why Gmail is crashing on your Galaxy S8+ so the safest way to deal with this problem is through this method:

  1. From a Home screen, touch and swipe up or down to display all apps.
  2. From a Home screen, navigate: Settings > Apps.
  3. Tap App Manager.
  4. Locate then tap Gmail.
  5. Tap Storage.
  6. Tap CLEAR CACHE.
  7. Tap Cached data.
  8. Tap CLEAR.

After doing this, reboot your phone to refresh its memory and then when it becomes ready, open the app to know if it still crashes or shows the “Unfortunately, Gmail has stopped” error. If not, then you may log back in to your account but if the problem remains, there’s a couple more procedures you should do.

Second Solution: Wipe cache partition

When there’s a corrupt cache in your phone, it may result to a poor performance and that might be the case here. So, the next thing you should do is delete all system caches so that they will be replaced with new ones. You can do so by rebooting your phone in Recovery Mode and wiping the cache partition:

  1. Turn off the device.
  2. Press and hold the Volume Up key and the Bixby key, then press and hold the Power key.
  3. When the Android logo displays, release all keys (‘Installing system update’ will show for about 30 – 60 seconds before showing the Android system recovery menu options).
  4. Press the Volume down key several times to highlight “wipe cache partition.”
  5. Press the Power key to select.
  6. Press the Volume down key to highlight “yes” and press the Power key to select.
  7. When the wipe cache partition is complete, “Reboot system now” is highlighted.
  8. Press the Power key to restart the device.

If the Gmail app still crashes after doing this procedure, then  you must do the next solution.

Third Solution: Do the Master Reset

Gmail is embedded in the firmware. We’ve already tried resetting it to no avail. Then we tried deleting the caches thinking that’s where the problem lies but it’s the same. So, a reset is the most logical thing to do at this point. But before that, try to find out if there’s an available firmware update and then download it. If there’s none, then proceed.

First, make sure you make a backup of your important files and data especially the ones that are stored in your phone’s internal storage. Then, remove your Google account from  your phone so that you won’t be locked out after the reset. Once everything is set and ready, follow these steps to reset your phone…

  1. Turn off the device.
  2. Press and hold the Volume Up key and the Bixby key, then press and hold the Power key.
  3. When the green Android logo displays, release all keys (‘Installing system update’ will show for about 30 – 60 seconds before showing the Android system recovery menu options).
  4. Press the Volume down key several times to highlight “wipe data / factory reset.
  5. Press Power button to select.
  6. Press the Volume down key until ‘Yes — delete all user data’ is highlighted.
  7. Press Power button to select and start the master reset.
  8. When the master reset is complete, “Reboot system now” is highlighted.
  9. Press the Power key to restart the device.

After the reset, you have to set your phone up like it’s a brand new phone. I hope that our solutions work for you. If you have other issues or concerns you want us to address, contact us or leave a comment below.
