The #Samsung #Galaxy #S8 is a flagship phone released last year that ditches the physical home button. The 5.8 inch Super AMOLED display now occupies most of the front portion of the phone while the fingerprint sensor has been moved to the back. This has a solid build quality made of an aluminum frame and Gorilla Glass on the front and back. Under the hood is a Snapdragon 835 processor with 4GB of RAM which allows the device to run apps smoothly. Although this is a solid performing phone there are instances when certain issues can occur which we will be addressing today. In this latest installment of our troubleshooting series we will tackle the Galaxy S8 only turns on when plugged to charger issue and other related problems.
S8 Only Turns On When Plugged To Charger
Problem: A year old S8. Battery works fine, charges well. Phone only turns on or works fine only when plugged in to Samsung factory quick charge plug. Phone has always been in Otter box case. It recently slipped out of my hand and fell flat on it’s back still in Otter on tabletop about 2 ft high. Suspect the charging usb port or the battery connection may have been somehow disconnected.
Solution: If this issue occurred after the phone got dropped then it’s likely that a component got damaged during this incident and is now causing the problem. There are however some troubleshooting steps that you can perform which we have listed below to eliminate any other factors that could be causing this problem.
- Clean the charging port of the phone using a can of compressed air. Make sure to remove any dirt or debris stuck in this port.
- Try using a different charging cord and wall charger to fully charge the phone. Disconnect the charger then check if the phone will turn on.
- Backup your phone data then do a factory reset. This will allow you to check if the problem is caused by a software glitch.
If the above steps fails to fix the problem then you will have to bring the phone to a service center and have it checked.
S8 Screen Freezes Will Not Turn Off
Problem: The screen freezes and a 1/2 screen blowup is all the screen will show and it won’t power off no matter how long I hold the power button. I did a soft reboot and the phone worked for a while. The user was watching youtube and many times a blue box popped up saying “wifi security check” or “Healthy Tip” or some such thing. The screen freeze has happened twice and froze with wifi security check and when she tried to hard reboot, the shutdown button was under the blue screen. User swears she did not tap anything other than the “x” on the screen during the moments the ads popped up.
Solution: If this problem occurred right after some ads appeared on the phone then the device might be infected with adware. You can try uninstalling some of the suspicious apps that are installed in the phone then check if the issue still occurs. One best way to deal with this problem however is to backup the phone data then do a factory reset.
S8 Screen Went Black
Problem: Hi, my Samsung S8 turned on this morning, then quickly went black. I am unable to charge the phone with a corded or wireless charger. I took it to the AT&T store, and they told me I need to take it to someone who can fix it. They were no help.
Solution: For this particular problem you should try doing a soft reset first. This is done by pressing and holding both power and volume down buttons for at least 10 seconds. Your phone should restart after this. If it doesn’t and since you have already verified that the device does not charge using a wired or wireless charger then this might already be caused by a faulty hardware component. The best thing you can do right now is to bring the phone to a service center and have it checked.
