Quick fix to “Facebook has stopped” error on Galaxy S8+

Facebook is pre-installed on your Samsung Galaxy S8 Plus so you can only disable it but not uninstall it. But aside from being able to disable it, you can also reset it and that’s the first and probably the only thing you need to do to fix this problem. By reset I mean clear its cache and data as some of them may have already been corrupted or obsolete. Without further adieu, this is how you reset Facebook app on your Galaxy S8 Plus…

  1. From the Home screen, swipe up on an empty spot to open the Apps tray.
  2. Tap Settings > Apps.
  3. Scroll a few times to the left to view contents of ALL tab.
  4. Find and touch Facebook.
  5. Tap Storage.
  6. Tap Clear cache.
  7. Tap Clear data and then tap OK.

You are resetting the app only so your FB account will remain intact and none of your pictures or posts in your timeline will be deleted. To retrieve them, all you need to do is to log into your Facebook account again.

However, if the error “Unfortunately, Facebook has stopped” still shows up when you open the app or when you log in, then you have to do more than this to fix the problem. Continue reading below to troubleshoot your phone that’s plagued with this error.

Troubleshooting Galaxy S8+ with “Facebook has stopped” error

I know that not everyone will be comfortable doing some troubleshooting procedures on their phones but I assure you that the procedures here are safe and that this problem is just very easy to fix. I am certain that we can fix it by doing one or two of the procedures below…

Update Facebook and Messenger

Facebook is pre-installed on your phone but the Messenger is not but these apps work side-by-side to give you a good experience when it comes to instant messaging. There have been cases wherein Messenger caused the main app to crash and while we can just uninstall it, this time try to update it to rule out the possibility that this is just a compatibility issue between these apps. If there’s an available update for Facebook, then update it as well…

  1. From the Home screen, swipe up on an empty spot to open the Apps tray.
  2. Tap Play Store.
  3. Tap the Menu key and then tap My Apps.
  4. Tap Messenger and then tap Update to update it.
  5. Do the same for Facebook if there’s an available update for it.

NOTE: To keep your apps automatically updated, tap the Menu > Settings then tap Auto-update apps to select the check box.

After this, try to open Facebook and see if the error still shows up and if so, move on to the next step.

Uninstall Messenger

Now, it’s time to uninstall Messenger since updating it didn’t fix the problem. With this, we are trying to make sure it’s not just an issue between these apps…

  1. From the Home screen, swipe up on an empty spot to open the Apps tray.
  2. Tap Settings > Apps.
  3. Swipe to the left a few times to show contents of ALL tab.
  4. Tap Messenger.
  5. Tap Uninstall.
  6. Tap Uninstall again to confirm.

Try to trigger the error and if it still pops up, it’s time to look somewhere else.

Run your S8+ in Safe mode

Sometimes pre-installed apps crash due to the intervention of third-party apps. We need to rule this possibility out by disabling all third-party apps. To do that, you just have to reboot your phone in Safe mode and this is how…

  1. Turn the device off.
  2. Press and hold the Power key past the model name screen.
  3. When “SAMSUNG” appears on the screen, release the Power key.
  4. Immediately after releasing the Power key, press and hold the Volume down key.
  5. Continue to hold the Volume down key until the device finishes restarting.
  6. Safe mode will display in the bottom left corner of the screen.
  7. Release the Volume down key when you see Safe Mode.
  8. Uninstall apps that are causing a problem.

Facebook will still run in this mode because it’s pre-installed so try to open it to know if it still crashes. If the problem is fixed, find the app that’s causing the problem and uninstall it. If the error still shows up, then you have no other choice but to reset your phone.

Backup your files and do the Master reset

App problems can be fixed by reset but the thing is you will lose all files and data that are saved in your phone’s internal storage. So, you need to make a backup of everything you don’t want to lose including your contacts, messages, pictures, videos, music, etc. It may take a few minutes depending on the amount of data you’re copying. You can store them on an SD card or transfer them over to your computer.

After the backup, disable the Factory Reset Protection (FRP) so that you won’t be locked out of your device after the reset. You just have to remove your Google account from your phone to do this. Once everything is set and ready, follow these steps to do the Master Reset:

  1. Back up data on the internal memory. If you have signed into a Google account on the device, you have activated Anti-theft and will need your Google credentials to finish the Master reset.
  2. Turn off the device.
  3. Press and hold the Volume Up key and the Bixby key, then press and hold the Power key.
  4. When the green Android logo displays, release all keys (‘Installing system update’ will show for about 30 – 60 seconds before showing the Android system recovery menu options).
  5. Press the Volume down key several times to highlight “wipe data / factory reset.
  6. Press Power button to select.
  7. Press the Volume down key until ‘Yes — delete all user data’ is highlighted.
  8. Press Power button to select and start the master reset.
  9. When the master reset is complete, “Reboot system now” is highlighted.
  10. Press the Power key to restart the device.
