How to fix Samsung Galaxy S10 Plus that keeps freezing

A powerful smartphone like the Samsung Galaxy S10 Plus that keeps freezing may have some serious issues with the firmware. Ever since the time of the Galaxy S5, we’ve already been receiving quite a lot of complaints about freezes, lags, sluggishness and other performance-related issues. Most of the time, the problem isn’t with the hardware. When issues like this occur, it’s often the firmware or apps that we have to check as they may be causing the problem.

So, in this post, I will walk you through in troubleshooting Galaxy S10 Plus that keeps freezing for some reason. I will share with you some solutions we’ve been using for the past few years to resolve problems like this. Fixing Galaxy S10 Plus that keeps freezing

While performance issues are very annoying, they’re relatively easy to fix. A few troubleshooting procedures may already make your phone run normally again. But before that, the freezing problem that I will address in this post makes your phone stop responding at any point, no matter what you’re doing and the best thing you can do about it is reboot your phone. Worry no more as you can fix it on your own without any help from a tech. Here’s what you need to do:

First solution: Force restart your phone

If the phone freezes and won’t respond when you press and hold the power key, then you must perform the forced reboot to make the device respond again. Press and hold the Volume Down button and Power key at the same time for 10 seconds or more. Your Galaxy S10 Plus will reboot like it normally does so now, you can continue troubleshooting so as to prevent from freezes.

Just in case your phone doesn’t respond to the forced reboot procedure, try this instead:

  1. Press and hold the Volume Down button and don’t let go.
  2. Press and hold the Power key while holding down the volume button.
  3. Now, keep both keys held down together for 10 seconds or more.

This is actually the same as the first procedure but we’re making sure that you’re doing it right.

Second solution: Use your phone in Safe Mode

This is not a solution to the phone that keeps freezing but it’s a very important procedure to know if the problem is caused by some third-party apps or not. While your Galaxy S10 Plus is in this mode, all third-party applications are disabled but you may continue using it as all pre-installed apps are still working. Here’s how to restart your phone in safe mode:

  1. Turn the device off.
  2. Press and hold the Power key past the model name screen appearing on the screen.
  3. When SAMSUNG appears on the screen, release the Power key.
  4. Immediately after releasing the Power key, press and hold the Volume down key.
  5. Continue to hold the Volume down key until the device finishes restarting.
  6. When Safe mode appears in the bottom left corner of the screen, release the Volume down key.

While in this mode and the phone works perfectly without those freezes, then it means that the cause of the problem is a third-party app. Move on to the next solution to fix the problem.

Third solution: Uninstall suspicious third-party applications

Assuming that the freezes disappeared while your phone is in safe mode, the next thing you should do is determine the apps you may deem suspicious. It may be just an app or a group of apps. Once you already have a suspect, try to uninstall them one by one until the phone works perfectly fine. Before you do that, however, reboot your phone in normal mode and then follow these steps to uninstall a third-party application.

  1. From the Home screen, swipe up on an empty spot to open the Apps tray.
  2. Tap Settings > Apps.
  3. Find and tap suspicious app.
  4. Tap UNINSTALL > OK.

You may have to uninstall more than one app to fix your Galaxy S10 Plus that keeps freezing. On the other hand, if the phone is still freezing even in safe mode, then move on to the next solution.

Fourth solution: Reset settings of your phone

We are now trying to troubleshoot the firmware of your device but the first thing we need to do before that is to bring it back to its factory settings without deleting third-party apps and files. Let’s just bring the settings back to default values just to rule out the possibility that the problem is due to some incorrect settings. Here’s how it’s done on your Galaxy S10 Plus:

  1. From the Home screen, swipe up on an empty spot to open the Apps tray.
  2. Tap Settings > General Management > Reset > Reset settings.
  3. Tap RESET SETTINGS.
  4. If you have set up a PIN, enter it.
  5. Tap RESET SETTINGS.
  6. The device will restart to perform the reset of settings.

After this and your phone is still freezing, then move on to the next step.

Fifth solution: Delete the system cache

It is important that you do this because you’re not just deleting the system cache but also replacing it with a new one. The system cache is a group of temporary files that the system creates to make your phone work smoothly but there are times when they get corrupted. When that happens, a lot of performance-related issues may occur including a phone that keeps freezing. So, delete it so that the system will create a new one.

  1. Turn off the device.
  2. Press and hold the Volume Up key and the Bixby key, then press and hold the Power key.
  3. When the Android logo displays, release all three keys.
  4. An ‘Installing system update’ message will show for 30 – 60 seconds before the Android system recovery menu options appear.
  5. Press the Volume down key several times to highlight wipe cache partition.
  6. Press Power key to select.
  7. Press the Volume down key to highlight yes, them and press the Power key to select.
  8. When the wipe cache partition is complete, Reboot system now is highlighted.
  9. Press the Power key to restart the device.

It will take a little longer than usual for your phone to boot up after this as it rebuilds the cache but once the phone becomes active, continue your observation and use the phone normally to see if the freezes disappeared.

Sixth solution: Backup your files and reset your phone

If all else fails, you have no other choice but to reset your phone. A smartphone that keeps freezing is often fixed by doing the first 5 procedures or solutions but just in case the problem continues for some reason, then you have to do this. But before that, make sure to backup your important files and data as they will be deleted. After which, remove your Google account so that you won’t be locked out of your device after the reset.

Follow these steps to fix your Samsung Galaxy S10 Plus that keeps freezing…

  1. Back up data on the internal memory. If you have signed into a Samsung account on the device, you have activated Anti-theft and will need your Samsung credentials to finish the master reset.
  2. Turn off the device.
  3. Press and hold the Volume Up key and the Bixby key, then press and hold the Power key.
  4. When the green Android logo displays, release all keys (‘Installing system update’ will show for about 30 – 60 seconds before showing the Android system recovery menu options).
  5. Press the Volume down key several times to highlight ‘wipe data / factory reset’.
  6. Press Power button to select.
  7. Press the Volume down key until ‘Yes — delete all user data’ is highlighted.
  8. Press Power button to select and start the master reset.
  9. When the master reset is complete, ‘Reboot system now’ is highlighted.
  10. Press the Power key to restart the device.
