S4 Overheating / Battery Drain Issues After Lollipop Update

Problem: I got my s4 last week which is of second hand set. I got android lollipop 5.0.1 running in. Tell some suggestions to get rid of s4’s overheating problem and battery draining problem. Please do help me.

Solution: Owners of Android phones who have updated the software to Android Lollipop are experiencing one common problem and that is the battery drain and overheating issue. It appears to be a bug in the software that has not been addressed yet. One of the first troubleshooting step that you should do is to perform a factory reset. This deletes the system data stored in your phone, data which may be causing conflicts with the new software version causing these issues. Before proceeding make sure to back up your phone data.

  • Turn off the device.
  • Press and hold the following three buttons at the same time: Volume Up key, Home key, Power key.
  • When the phone vibrates, release the Power key but continue to press and hold the Volume Up key and the Home key.
  • When the Android System Recovery screen appears, release the Volume Up and Home keys.
  • Press the Volume down key several times key to highlight ‘wipe data / factory reset.’
  • Press Power button to select.
  • Press the Volume down key until ‘delete all user data’ is highlighted.
  • Press Power button to select and start the master reset.
  • When the master reset is complete, ‘Reboot system now’ is highlighted.
  • Press the Power key to restart the device.

S4 Factory Reset Before Or After Lollipop Update

Problem: hi, i own a samsung galaxy s4 i9500 octa core and running kitkat 4.4.2 and iam about to update to lollipop 5.1. i would like to know if factory reset before the update will help preventing  bugs from apperence or i should factory reset after the update or both….i need help ! i dont know much about android world and i would like to take a step ahead to prevent the disaster from happening please contact me as soon as possible. thank you.

Solution: When doing a software upgrade it isn’t necessary to do a factory reset first. If after the software update your phone experiences some issues then it is a good idea to perform a factory reset. So, to answer your question, it is better to do the factory reset right after the software update.

S4 Unsuccessful Software Update

Problem: I purchased a used Samsung S4 on EBay last fall after my phone was stolen.  Ever since I have received notices that the software needed updated but every time I try it tells me it is unsuccessful.  Do you have any suggestions as to how to make it able to update?  Do I need to unlock something?  Would it matter if it was not a “Verizon” phone before, although I believe it was.  After shutting it on and restarting it I get this a screen with SAMSUNG at the top, a little Padlock icon in the middle and Custom written below.  The next screen that comes up has SAFESTRAP-DISABLED, starting system in so many seconds.  I don’t know if this custom thing or the safestrap thing has anything to do with the updates not working? Thank you in advance for any help you can offer.

Solution: The reason why your phone can’t get the official software update is because your phone is already rooted and running on a custom ROM. To be able to get the official Lollipop update you will first need to install the official KitKat firmware of your phone and have it unrooted.

S4 Randomly Opens Apps When Charging

Problem: I noticed that after the latest system update there’s been a few issues with my S4.While my phone is charging it randomly selects and open apps. Another problem is with the video player. Online videos will freeze after a few seconds but the audio still continues to play. Is there a way to troubleshoot this? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Solution: You should first check if this is a software related problem by doing a factory reset. Make sure to back up your data before proceeding.

After the factory reset it is very likely that the video freezing issue will disappear.

The issue regarding the phone apps opening randomly is a different case. If this issue still persists then try using a different charger. If using a different charger does not help then this may already be a hardware related problem. Bring your phone to an authorized service center and have it checked.

S4 Can’t Access Messaging App After Lollipop Update

Problem: I have a Galaxy S4 Active. I was not having any problems – I received a note saying there is an upgrade. After I upgraded to the newer version I am not able to get into messages at all. When I click on the message icon the screen goes as if it’s going to open but then reverts back to the home screen. Please Help.

Solution: Clearing the cache and data of the messaging app will usually resolve this type of issue. Just follow the steps outlined below.

  • From any Home screen, tap the Menu key.
  • Tap Settings.
  • Tap the More tab.
  • Tap Application manager.
  • If necessary, swipe left or right to the All screen
  • Tap the Messaging application
  • Tap Clear data and then tap OK.
  • Tap Clear cache.

S4 Does Not Turn On After Installing Custom ROM

Problem: Hi, I have a problem with my S4 and I have been looking for a solution in some forums but my search has been unsuccessful. I was installing a custom rom and accidentally turned off the cell phone, now it can’t turn on and apparently is unable to charge the battery. I only want to know if there is a way to fix it or not.

Solution: Try using a new battery on your phone and connect it to the wall charger for 20 minutes before turning it on.  If your phone still does not turn on then try using a different charger. You should also try to connect your phone to a computer and check if it can be recognized.

S4 Audio Video Not In Sync After Lollipop Update

Problem: Hi, I have a Galaxy S4 that is having issues with the sync of audio/video. My phone recently did an Android software update and now the video and audio are not syncing up on YouTube or Netflix. The video feed is a little behind the audio feed. It’s very frustrating and I don’t know what I can do. I’ve restarted my phone multiple times, uninstalled and redownloaded the apps, etc, and nothing works. Everything worked just fine before the software update. Please let me know if you have any suggestions. Thanks!!

Solution: The best way to resolve this sync issue is to do a factory reset since there is a big possibility that this is caused by the data from the previous software version that has not been completely removed from your phone yet. Make sure to back up your data before proceeding.

S4 Network / SIM Card Error

Problem: Wonder if you can help me, my Samsung galaxy s4 says it’s registered on network but I can’t make calls or receive them on the call settings it says network or sim card error can you help?

Solution: Turn off your phone then take out the SIM card. Reinsert the SIM card then turn on your phone. If the issue persists try to contact your carrier and ask if there are any network related issues in your area. You should also ask if you have any account related issues.

If the network and your account don’t have a problem then try to insert another SIM card in your phone. If the issue is still the same then back up your phone data and perform a factory reset.

S4 Data Issues

Problem: Hello, I have an S4 thats just about a year old. I am having some serious data issues.  We jave 8 gigs for data. My husband and I have our phones each limited so we dont go over and we never have. The problem is we RUN OUT! Were we live we dont have internet so we purchased a larger plan to Hotspot. This month I havent used my hotspot bc I wanted to see how it would reflect my data plan and I havr already almost reached 4gigs and my plan has less then a week to go! I checked my background foreground and there isnt much going on in that department. My phone only updates with wifi, so only if i go into town. We dont stream that often or not to incur this much data.  But we do Browse and Google pretty frequently. Ive attached a few photos from my data settings in the event that leads to something. Thanks for all your help and any suggestions you may have!

Solution: It appears that the Facebook app uses the most data with more than 1GB used already. Try to disable this app or temporarily uninstall it then observe your data consumption. If you need to access your Facebook account then just access it using your phone browser.

If your phone still consumes a considerable amount of data then your next step is to check what app is causing this. Try uninstalling one app then observe your data consumption. Do this repeatedly until you get to the point where the data consumption reduces significantly.

S4 Network Error

Problem: Hello when I’m trying to send a picture it takes it forever to even try and send it and then a little message pops up saying network error what could this problem be and how can I resolve it I’ve tried rebooting the phone and it won’t work I have the galaxy s4 active any information would be greatly appreciated and helpful!

Solution: Make sure that you have an active data subscription and that your phone mobile data is turned on. If you still can’t send a picture then check your phone’s APN setting and make sure that it matches the one used by your carrier.

  • Tap on Apps
  • Tap on Settings and then tap on More networks
  • Tap on Mobile networks
  • Tap on Access Point Names

S4 Messaging / Contacts Stopped Working After Lollipop Update

Problem: Hello! So I recently updated my S4 to the 5.0 update and everything seems to be working fine except when after I’ve sent a message this note pops up that says “Unfortunately, messaging has stopped working.” Then I was trying to type in a number to call and got 3 numbers in before I got another message saying, “Unfortunately, contacts has stopped working.” Not sure what is going on. What should I do?

Solution: You need to troubleshoot both issues separately to resolve them.

To fix the messaging has stopped issue you should clear the cache and data of your messaging app.

To fix the contacts has stopped working issue you should clear the cache and data of the contacts app. Make sure to have a backup copy of your contacts before proceeding.

  • From any Home screen, tap the Menu key.
  • Tap Settings.
  • Tap the More tab.
  • Tap Application manager.
  • If necessary, swipe left or right to the All screen
  • Tap the Contacts application
  • Tap Clear data and then tap OK.
  • Tap Clear cache.

If the issues still persists then wipe the cache partition of your phone.

  • Turn off the device.
  • Press and hold the following three buttons at the same time: Volume Up key, Home key, Power key
  • When the phone vibrates, let go of the Power key but continue to press and hold the Volume Up key and the Home key.
  • When the Android System Recovery screen appears, release the Volume Up and Home keys.
  • Press the Volume Down key to highlight ‘wipe cache partition.’
  • Press the Power key to select. The phone will automatically restart after the cache is wiped.

S4 Screen Lighting Issues

Problem: Hello! I’m facing a problem with my galaxy s4, well the screen tends to darken out and when i press the lock button only the menu and back key light up. With this if I am on my phone sometimes it will have glitches run through the screen or turn into an all white screen.. then after it will all go back to normal after waiting a while or me taking the battery out. A friend said it may be my LED lighting, but Im not sure. I really need help before it’s too late.

Solution: This already looks like a hardware related issue. You should however check first if a third party app is causing this problem by starting your phone in Safe Mode. In this mode only the pre-installed apps in your phone are loaded while the third party apps that you installed are disabled.

  • Turn the device off.
  • Press and hold the Power key.
  • When ‘Samsung Galaxy S4′ appears on the screen, release the Power key.
  • Immediately after releasing the Power key, press and hold the Volume down key.
  • Continue to hold the Volume down key until the device finishes restarting.
  • Safe mode will display in the bottom left corner of the screen.
  • Release the Volume down key when you see Safe Mode.

If the problem still occurs even in Safe Mode then you need to bring your phone to an authorized service center. Your phone display may need to be replaced.

S4 Long Text Messages Received Are Being Split

Problem: I have a question/concern about my galaxy s4 texting issue. When i am texting someone and i recieve long messages it splits them up into small 10 word groups and i receive them like that. How do i get more words into a text from someone?

Solution: Is your carrier Verizon or Sprint? If so then this is a network limitation. Verizon and Sprint uses CDMA technology which can only handle 160 character texts. If the message is greater than 160 characters then it will be broken down into separate messages.

S4 Volume Button Not Working After Lollipop Update

Problem: after the latest update for my Samsung s4 (did mine on 5/10/15) I cant adjust the volume of the whole phone without going into settings.  I used to be able to just hit the volume keys on the side and the whole phone (system, ringtone, notifications) would turn down.  If I take it with me to a movie or to church, I want to be able to silence the WHOLE thing, system, ringtone, notifications, media without having to go to sound and notification on my device & silence them all. thanks.

Solution: Turn your phone off then take out the battery. Press and hold the power button for at least a minute then reinsert the battery. Turn on your phone. If the volume keys still do not work then you should back up your phone data then do a factory reset from the menu.

  • From any Home screen, tap the Menu key.
  • Tap Settings.
  • Tap the Accounts tab.
  • Under ‘Backup options,’ tap Backup and reset.
  • If desired, tap Automatic restore to clear the check box.
  • If desired, tap Back up my data to clear the check box.
  • Tap Factory data reset.
  • Tap Reset device.
  • If you have screen lock turned on, enter your PIN or password. Tap Continue.
  • Tap Delete all.

If the problem persists then this may already be hardware related. Bring your phone to an authorized service center and have it checked.

S4 Charging Issue

Problem: I bought this galaxy s4 from an AT&T worker after I broke my galaxy alpha while on the next program. It was his old phone and he assured me nothing was wrong with it, he just got a new phone. The first day I had it I noticed it wasn’t charging like it should. He told me it was the same charger as my old phone. My charger wouldn’t work. It says on the screen that the phone is charging and the red led light is lit up, but after hours on the charger my battery percentage hasn’t changed. I even bought a new battery thinking that would help, I’ve tried at least 6 different chargers too. Now today I’ve noticed the blue led light will not turn off. I’ve tried everything suggested on help sites and it’s still on. I hate to think that he would knowingly sell me a junk phone but I’ve had nothing but problems since I got it. If you could help I would really appreciate it!

Solution: Your best option right now is to back up your phone data and do a factory reset. If this problem is software related then it will most likely be resolved after this procedure.

If the issue persists then this may already be hardware related. Have your phone checked at an authorized service center.

S4 Randomly Turns Off After Lollipop Update

Problem: Hi, i found you guys online. hope you can help me. I upgraded to Lollipop 2 weeks ago. Initially it would randomly switch off but I would be able to switch it back on shortly after. Few days ago, it switched off, and i was able to switch it back on again after about 15 minutes. Earlier today, same thing happened, but it took about 1.5hours for it to be able to switch back on properly. Now, it has switched off and won’t turn back on. (It has been about 4 hours). All this while, I would remove the battery, then reinsert it. it will show the regular (white) Samsung S4 logo, but then black out and switch off immediately after. Please advice.

Solution: Try using a new battery on your phone. Make sure to charge your phone sing the wall charger for at least 20 minutes before turning it on. You should also take out the microSD card if your phone has one before turning your phone on.

If the issue persists then wipe the cache partition of your phone.

One last troubleshooting step that you can perform is a factory reset. You should only do this if you have previously made a backup of your phone data.

S4 No Notification Sound When Text Box Is Open After Lollipop Update

Problem: Hello… I’m going to guess that you’ve had people messaging you about this since it seems to be a widespread issue. I just got a Samsung Galaxy S4. My issue is that the notification tone doesn’t sound off when the text box is open. When I’m texting with someone I don’t sit there and watch the screen for the next text to pop up so I pretty much have to go back to my home screen and wait for the tone. This is pretty much a dealbreaker for me in regard to this phone. I looked it up on Google and there are tons of people experiencing the same thing and I’ve tried every possible remedy that people have suggested but none of them work. I’m hoping you might have found a way around this annoyance. Every other notification works just fine but this is one of the more important ones in my case and it’s falling flat.

Solution: This may just be a setting related issue. Go to Settings – Sound & Notification – Interruptions – Tap “When calls and notifications arrive” – Tap Always interrupt.

If the issue still remains then this may be a bug in the software. You will have to wait for the next software update which will most likely have a fix to this issue.

S4 Plays Sounds To Speaker Even If Headphones Attached

Problem: Hi guys. For quite some time now my galaxy s4 (i9500) has been playing system sounds through the loudspeaker even if I have earphones plugged in. The only thing that still only plays through the earphones is media but everything else plays loud as well. I tried using different earphones and the same problem exists. I’m not sure what could have caused it because it just started randomly. I hope you guys have a solution to this. Thanks a lot

Solution: Try to check if your phone’s audio port has any dirt or lint inside. Clean it sing a toothpick if you spot any. If after cleaning the audio port the issue still persists then back up your phone data and perform a factory reset. This is to eliminate any software related causes.

If you still can’t hear any sound on your earphones then this may already be a hardware related issue. Have your phone checked at an authorized service center.

S4 Gallery Images Are Grey

Problem: My galaxy S4’s images does not “open”. Some of the images stay grey. I have cleared the cache as suggested, and also turned of the “sync” abilities of my phone….. also restarted it after that, but still have a problem. I see that this was a problem in 2013 already, and wonder if there are any other suggestions?

Solution: You should try connecting your phone using a USB cord with a computer running on Kies. Try to view your phone photos using Kies. If you still can’t view the photos then they may already be corrupt. Are you storing your photos in your phone’s microSD? If so, then the microSD may be faulty already. You should try to use a new microSD.

If the photos are stored in your phone’s internal storage then you will have to back up your phone data and do a factory reset.

S4 Phone Unlocks When Receiving Text Message

Problem: I have been having trouble with my Galaxy s4 staying locked when I get a text message. Handcent is installed on my phone, and is set as my main messaging app. My phone will be sitting, locked, and then I get a message and my phone screen pops up, unlocked and displaying the pop up screen with my message. Then, sometimes if I click on the screen, it locks, but other times it’s as if I’ve never locked it. Please help me with this issue, it has been happening for a few weeks now, and I don’t like people being able to see, and go through my phone. Thank you in advance!

Solution: Try uninstalling the Handcent app and use the stock messaging app as this issue is most likely caused by the third party messaging app. If the issue does not occur when you use the stock messaging app then try to stick to the stock messaging app. You may also choose to use Handcent but this time download the latest version from the Google Play Store.

S4 Not Connecting To Home Wi-Fi

Problem: My hubbie and I both have Samsung Galaxy s4 phones.  We use local service (farmers telephone) for TV, computer and home wifi, and land line phone. Together we have limited data (1 gb). My phone easily picks up  free wifi in other locations when I press to connect. However, I have never been able to connect at my residence. At home I have no connecting problem with my iPad and  blue ray DVD. What is problem?

Solution: Try deleting your home Wi-Fi connection from your phone then restart your phone and your router. Search for your Wi-Fi connection on the phone then connect to it. It’s likely that you should be able to connect by now.

S4 Not Connecting To Internet After Using Clean Master App

Problem: Hi there, I have a Samsung Galaxy S4 that works great. Or it did until this afternoon after I installed the Clean Master App from Google Play store and used it to wipe out a bunch of “wasted storage space” from the phone. Clean Master app had a whole list of files and cached items checkmarked for deletion that was supposed to speed everything up and make operation smoother. …..Instead, now I can’t connect to the internet at all using either the native phone browser or Chrome, and no apps will work that require this connection. I need to know which setting was changed, or which file was deleted that was important for connecting to the internet. Wi-fi still connects just fine. I have already deleted the Clean Master app and rebooted the phone by removing the battery and reinserting it. I still cannot connect to the internet. Please help!! Thank you very much in advance.

Solution: Try to check if mobile data on your phone is turned on. If it is then the next step is to check if the APN setting of your phone is the one used by your carrier.

  • Tap on Apps
  • Tap on Settings and then tap on More networks
  • Tap on Mobile networks
  • Tap on Access Point Names

Compare the APN settings of your phone to that of your carrier. You can check your carrier’s website for the settings or contact their tech support hotline.

S4 “Unfortunately clock has stopped working” Error After Lollipop Update

Problem: I have a Samsung Galaxy S4 and I recently updated my phone. Ever since the update the standard clock app that comes on the phone has stopped working. Every time I try to open the clock to change an alarm, it pops up with the message “Unfortunately, Clock has stopped” and immediately shuts the app. I have tried restarting the phone, going to the app manager and forcing the application to stop, clearing the cache, clearing the data, and none of these have solved the problem. Please help me figure out how to solve this issue.

Solution: For this issue you will need to clear the cache and data of the clock application.

  • From any Home screen, tap the Menu key.
  • Tap Settings.
  • Tap the More tab.
  • Tap Application manager.
  • If necessary, swipe left or right to the All screen

S4 Stuck In Manual Mode After Lollipop Update

Problem: Hello! I am very frustrated right now and am very glad i came across your email while googling on my laptop.  Ever since my phone did an upgrade 3 days ago it has turned into the devil.  No matter  how many sim cards i insert..same thing.  Turn on my phone, it is a black screen with a green spaceship looking thing in the middle of the screen. there are tiny red words at the top left hand with tiny blue words right under that. some of them read…reboot system, apply update from external storage ect…bottom of the screen left corner are yellow words…manual mode ect…nothing NOTHING is working to get this phone on.  tried taking out battery, tried taking out sim and inserting new one, left battery out for a period of time..all this to go back to the black screen with the spaceship and colored wording. i can reboot even when i scroll to reboot, nor can i factory set even if i scroll to that.  i want to throw it against the wall.  i am hoping you may have some positive info for me.  thanks so very much.

Solution: I doubt that this is a SIM card related issue as this is more likely a software related issue.

Try rebooting your device first by turning your phone off the taking out the battery and microSD card (if your phone has one installed). Press and hold the power button for at least a minute then reinsert the battery (leave the microSD out). Turn on your phone.

If the issue still persists then you will need to perform a factory reset. Make sure to do this only if you have previously made a backup of your phone data.

S4 Not Charging After Getting Wet

Problem: Hello, I am currently in the field with my unit in the military and we’re expected to be here for another week and a half. Tonight it started raining hard and I didn’t notice my phone got some moisture near it in My tent. It just kept telling me the mobile charger I was using wasn’t recognized and wasn’t able to charge. Looks like the water was in the area of my speaker but, it’s not charging. I did a hard reboot and it went to the download screen too. I turned it on and it still won’t charge. I don’t have great service where I am so trying to figure this out before my phone dies would be great. I was thinking of doing a hard reboot while I still had a charge but didn’t want my phone to die complete. What should I do?

Solution: You should first make sure that your phone is thoroughly dry by taking out the battery and burying your phone in a bowl of rice for at least 24 hours. Rice is a good absorber of moisture and it will dry out your phone’s internal components. Once your phone has dried then it is time to reinsert the battery and see if it charges. If it doesn’t charge then the water may have affected your phone’s charging capability. Try to check on the charging port of your phone if there are any dirt or lint present and clean it out using a toothpick. If the issue persists then you will have to bring your phone to an authorized service center for checking.

S4 Randomly Sending Messages To Contacts

Problem: Hi, I have been going nuts with trying to sort this issue. Any light that you can shed will be so appreciated. My 2 year contract with 02 went so well I re-newed my phone and contract with them in Feb this year. Then it all changed. My new phone, Galaxy s4, is able to send random downloads to people on my contact list without me sending them, using my phone or being near my phone. They don’t appear on my logs as messages sent either. The downloads apparently are as if I’m sending pictures but can’t be accessed or opened at all. I have never sent a picture, not even a smiley face or long text. I have no apps on my phone except the ones that come with the phone. I only use text, phone calls and the calendar. O2 says it may be a faulty sim card or a faulty number or handset. I am curious and worried how my phone, without a log, can send random downloads to people I have not contacted but are people in my contact list. It’s embarrassing getting calls from people I don’t really speak to saying I have sent them something they can’t open when I haven’t contacted them at all. Can you shed any light on this strange situation? Any thoughts would be fab

Solution: You should first check if this is a software related issue by backing up your phone data then doing a factory reset.

Do not restore your phone data yet. Observe first if your phone still sends out messages to your contact list. If it does then it’s probably a SIM or account related issue. If this is the case then this can be best addressed by your carrier.
