S4 Won’t Make Or Receive Calls

Problem: Phone won’t make or receive calls. A white x is over the power bars. Verizon store said it is probably a broken internal antenna.   It has an otterbox case and no physical damage. Did a full reset and still nothing.

Solution: If after performing a factory reset your phone still does not have any signal then this may already be a hardware related problem. The best thing to do right now is to bring the phone to an authorized service center and have it checked.

S4 Call Not Connecting

Problem: When I want to call, the calling is interrupted. Or, I dial particular number and then push the call button and nothing happens…I need to dial the number again. Typically I need to call twice to start the connection… Do you have any advice? Thank you

Related Problem: When trying to make a call from contacts , logs , or keypad it does not connect, as soon as you press the green phone symbol it goes straight back to the contact or in the case of using the keypad, back to the call screen with no number showing. After varying amounts of attempts (as many as 6) it will make the call the call will connect with no problems

Related Problem: About 2-3 weeks ago, my phone developed a problem in placing a call. I can either key in the # or use a number from Contacts, the phone starts to dial then stops and goes back to the previous screen. Before this, my phone dialed out every time I keyed in a number. Sometimes the phone will dial out the first time (like normal), but most of the time I have to place the call 2-3x. My system s/w was updated on Aug 22 to version 1545VRUG0F1. Thanks very much for any suggestions or help.

Solution: This problem could be caused by some form of corrupt data in your phone. Try clearing the cache and data of the phone app first. You should follow this up by wiping the cache partition of your phone.

If the issue still persists then proceed by checking if an app installed in your phone is causing this problem. To do this you need to start your device in Safe Mode. In this mode only the pre-installed apps are allowed to run while apps you downloaded are disabled making it easier to pinpoint the cause of the problem. Try making a call in this mode. If the problem does not occur then it’s most likely caused by an app. Find out what app this is and uninstall it.

If the issue occurs even in Safe Mode then restart your phone. The next thing to check is your phone network. Place a call in different areas and take note which area the call problem occurs. If the problem only occurs in one particular area then this may be a network related problem. If this is the case then you may need to contact your carrier.

Finally, if all else fails then you should consider backing up your phone data and do a factory reset.

S4 Can’t Hear Call

Problem: Hello, I have been experiencing a connection issue on my phone that has been getting worse and worse over a period of several months. When I make a call, the screen looks as if it is connecting (it says dialing, and then the count starts, as if the call is connected). However, I can not hear anything at all on my end. The person who is receiving the call hears a very loud, high-pitched crackling noise. When I answer an incoming call, I cannot hear anything. I have tried also tried this on speaker phone and the same problem persists. This problem used to be every once in awhile and would almost always be fixed with a simple reboot. Now this problem happens about 99% of the time, and a reboot does nothing to fix the problem. I have tried factory resetting my phone, installing several ROMs, including Cyanogen mod and PacMan ROM. The phone is currently running SlimKat rom (SLIM-4.4.4.build.9.0-OFFICIAL-8282). I am starting to believe this is a hardware problem rather than a software problem. Please let me know if you have any information regarding this issue. Thank you so much!

Solution: Since you already performed a factory reset and even flashed several ROM versions then this could very well be a hardware problem already possibly due to the microphone or the speaker. I suggest you bring your phone to an authorized service center and have it checked.

S4 Not Receiving Call

Problem: my wife just bought this phone at Walmart (straight talk), but I cannot call her new number from my cell or landline .. she can call out, but I can’t call in (I have straight talk also.

Solution: Since this is a new phone then this may be a provisioning issue. Try to contact Straight Talk first regarding this issue and have them check the account.

Aside from this another thing you should check is the phone call settings. See if any incoming call is diverted blocked.

S4 Call Ends Immediately

Problem: I try to make outgoing calls and when i put the phone to my ear i hear the end call tone.

Solution: This problem could be caused by corrupt temporary data in your device. Try clearing the cache and data first of your phone app. I also recommend wiping the cache partition of your phone.

Sometimes the network also contributes to this type of issue. Try to check if this occurs in only one particular area or in other areas as well. If the problem occurs in only one area then there may be a problem with the network tower in that area.

  1. Beware! My S4 could send / receive texts, download from internet, four or five bars (reception), but still couldn’t make or receive calls. To make more confusing, my wife could make / receive calls on her iphone with same carrier (att.) Spent hours trying to resolve, then finally went to ATT store. Now could make / receive calls! Turns out, ATT tower by my residence had GSM voice outage (her phone cdma), but neglected to tell any of the customers in the area. So before you begin the quest to fix the phone, get the phone out of the immediate vicinity and see if it will make calls. Hope this saves someone some aggravation.

  2. I have bars, but unable to make or receive calls. Text messages and data are working.
