How To Fix Samsung Galaxy S4 That Reboots Randomly

Random reboot is one of the most common problems Samsung Galaxy S4 owners have been complaining about. This problem could be simple and may be fixed with simple procedures, however, there is also a great possibility that it is a serious issue with the device. But the thing is you really don’t need to troubleshoot complicated issues if you don’t want to. You can always bring the phone to the store where you bought it and let the technician check on it.

Now, if you are one of the owners who is currently experiencing this problem, here are the things you need to do.

1. Soft reset the phone. Take the back panel off and the battery. Leave the device without a power supply for 30 seconds to a minute before booting it up normally. This will drain all static electricity that was stored in any components erasing all inconsistent data, which could be one of the causes of this problem.

2. Check for updates. Just before you delve into more complicated troubleshooting procedures, try checking for possible updates for your phone. If there are any, download and install it and see if the phone still reboots after the update. More often, updates bring bug fixes that may just fix the issue like this.

3. Boot to safe mode. There are times when third-party apps interfere with the normal processes. When the phone detects there are inconsistencies, it would reboot in an attempt to make things better. This is part of the phone’s fail-safe features. However, if the problem persists, try booting to Safe Mode. The procedure with keep third-party apps at bay while running pre-installed ones. If the problem does not manifest when in Safe Mode, you just confirmed the problem is in one of the third-party apps you installed.

4. Not enough battery left. There is also a possibility that the battery does not have enough charge left to power the phone normally. Try plugging the phone in to charge for a few minutes or even until the battery is full and observe if the problem recurs. Going a step further, try to check your battery for physical or liquid damage. Perhaps, the reboots are caused by interrupted power supply.

5. Check the phone for physical and liquid damage. If the phone suffered physical and liquid damages, random reboot is one of the results. If it were the case, there’s nothing more you can do than to bring the phone to a technician and have it checked up.

6. Revert back to original firmware. In case you are one of the people who have rooted their phones and installed custom ROMs, there is a possibility that the firmware is not stable enough. One way to fix the problem if this were the issue is to install the original firmware. Please note that you cannot claim warranty when your phone was rooted.

  1. My s4 is having issues since the update. It won’t update Google Play Services past 31% (sometimes staying there a ridiculous amount of time) before shutting down. Also, I can turn it on, leave it alone (literally not touching it) and it will still shut off within a minute or two. There were vague similar issues before the Lollipop update eg randomly shutting down but that mostly happened when it got too hot so it would be a matter of letting it stay off for a minute or so and then turn it back on and then it would be fine. It also didn’t occur this frequently so it didn’t inconvenience me too much. I haven’t been able to actually get on my phone since I updated (yesterday afternoon). I removed the SD card and it seems to be more willing to stay on long enough to get text messages and tell me I have updates to do (other than the Google Play Services one). But it just shut off again after removing the SD card. There are no error messages. It just goes “Nope!” and shuts off without warning.

  2. this works. Not because the card is ‘faulty’ as samsung (or your provider will say) but because the update is crap and cannot read the caed fast enough. eg, mine reboots when receiving and making calls. As my contacts wwre on the card, phone rings, I flip open the cover, system update then needs to access card to display caller info and image, it cant do it fast enough-CRASH! Loaded everything from card to device, removed card, problem solved!

  3. Its a bug with battery (batteries made in China), Please contact samsung, they will replace the battery. I got replacement today. 🙂
