February 22nd, 2012

This weekend the mobile world (including thedroidguy) is heading to Barcelona Spain for the GSMA’s Mobile World Congress. This is the biggest event for mobile technology in the world. It’s almost a CES sized show dedicated to mobile.

We’ve heard a ton of rumors and leaks in the past four weeks about what we will see at Mobile World Congress.

The leakage started with the Samsung Galaxy S III that evaporated after Samsung released a statement saying that they would not be releasing the follow up to last years ginormous Galaxy S II until later this Spring. What we are expecting is a new tablet running on Samsung’s Exonys Processors.

Qualcomm To Debut New Dual Core Snap Dragon With Integrated LTE At MWC

February 21st, 2012

For a while now one of the biggest MWC rumors has been that HTC will bring a new quad-core Android phone powered by Nvidia’s Tegra 3 chip set.  This will be the first time that HTC has swayed from their long term relationship with Qualcomm and their SnapDragon processors for Android devices.

So what’s Qualcomm bringing to MWC. Well Qualcomm’s Vice President of Product Management, Raj Talluri may have rubbed some folks the wrong way when he announced they wouldn’t be bringing any ready for market devices with Qualcomm’s quad-core SnapDragon processor. He did say there may be some conceptual designs but nothing that will be available anytime soon.

So do we write Qualcomm off right now for MWC? Heck no!

Huawei 10″ Tablet Leaks Ahead Of Mobile World Congress

February 21st, 2012

According to the rumors building up next week is going to be huge for Chinese Manufacturer Huawei. We all saw the Ascend P1 and P1S at CES in January. We were very impressed with the size of the phone, speed and of course that it’s going to have Ice Cream Sandwich out of the gate.

Next, we started hearing rumors about Huawei’s new top tier “Diamond” line of smartphones. The first Diamond phone is supposed to be the D1Q and Huawei let some images of what they are billing as their “fastest” smartphone yet, over the weekend.

Now, a Russian site called hi-tech.mail.ru has leaked images of a new 10″ Android tablet by Huawei that will succeed the Media Pad 7″.  This new Huawei tablet has a sleek metallic finish. There aren’t many details available of this un-yet named device however Theverge is reporting that it’s running Android 4.0 and has 3G functionality as well as a microSD port.

We’re expecting this tablet to be announced alongside their Diamond phones next week in Barcelona, we’ll be there to give you all the action.

In one of her first public speaking engagements since she took over as CEO of HP, former Ebay CEO and California Gubernatorial Candidate Meg Whitman, made some interesting statements about Android and her WebOS.

Samsung Galaxy Ace 2 And Galaxy Mini 2 Now Official

February 21st, 2012

Last week we saw the Samsung Galaxy Mini 2 sneak through the rumor mill ahead of Mobile World Congress. Now Samsung has confirmed not just the Galaxy Mini 2 but the  Galaxy Ace 2 as well.

Now if the Galaxy Ace and Galaxy Mini don’t sound familiar to our readers at home in the United States, that’s because neither of the phones actually saw a US release. However, they were both popular, mid to low range Android handsets in Europe, Asia and other international markets.

Both of the follow ups are also in the medium to low range category. They’re perfect phones for those coming from a “dumb” phone or a “feature” phone, and don’t want the latest top of the line bells and whistles money can buy.

Cruzer Lite’s Androidified Galaxy Nexus Cases Are Back In Stock

February 20th, 2012

Back in January, right after CES, we wrote about these really cool silicon cases for your Galaxy Nexus by our friends at Cruzer Lite.  The series of cases called “Androidified” sports our favorite little green robot actually molded into the back of the case as seen above.

They are very durable soft gel cases. In fact we have them on our Galaxy Nexus’s here and do a great job protecting the Nexus from dings and scratches. They are also thin enough that the Galaxy Nexus still fits into my generic vertical holster case.

The Androidified series of cases come in multiple colors and for multiple phones, including the Droid Razr and the Galaxy Nexus. They cost just about $10 and you can buy 2 and get one free with the code “BUY2GONE”

Go ahead and get your own at Amazon, via the link below:

Motorola XyBoard Heads Down Under As Xoom 2

February 20th, 2012

At the tail end of 2011 Motorola introduced two new tablets to the United States via Verizon Wireless. The Xyboard 10.1 and the Xyboard 8.2 were the follow ups for the Verizon Wireless Motorola Xoom. Both tablets run on Verizon’s 4G/LTE network and have 1.2ghz dual core processors.

The bigger of the two, the Xyboard 10.1, has landed at Telstra, Australia’s biggest carrier, as the Motorola Xoom 2.

The specs are exactly the same as the Xyboard 10.1 sans the name.  The tablet ships with Android 3.2 Honeycomb out of the gate, and hopefully it will see an update to Android 4.0, Ice Cream Sandwich, before too long.

Telstra is offering a variety of data plans for the Xoom 2 and the price of the Xoom 2 is dependent on the data plan customers purchase. Telstra’s data plans start at $29 for 1gb and $89 for 15gb. (Aussie dollars).

Panasonic Introduces New Eluga Android Phone

February 20th, 2012

Panasonic has introduced a new waterproof Android device called Eluga. From what we can tell the word Eluga doesn’t mean anything, and as Engadget says it’s kind of an ugly name. However the name is where ugly ends, the rest of the phone is actually very pretty.

It features a waterproof body design and a 4.3″ qHD screen at 960 x 540 resolution. Panasonic’s sleek curved design is ergonomic and Panasonic promises that it makes it easy to operate the phone with one hand.

New Barnes & Noble Nook Looking To Take On Kindle Fire?

February 20th, 2012

Theverge has obtained an internal Walmart memo that cites a new 8gb Barnes & Noble Nook presumably to take on Amazon’s Kindle Fire tablet. If the memo is to be believed than the new 8gb Nook Tablet should be in WalMart stores on Wednesday morning.

If we do in fact see a new Barnes and Noble Nook on Wednesday it will be one of the quietest launches ever, as no one knew this was coming.

Right now, the original Nook Tablet and the Kindle Fire are almost toe to toe in spec. Both devices are 7″ and run with Android in the background. Both sport 1024×600 screens. Both devices have 1ghz dual core processors, wifi, and 8 hours of battery life. The current Nook Tablet has 16gb of storage vs the Kindle Fires 8gb of storage. That extra 8 gb carries a $50 price difference.

The Nook Tablet that we could see on Wednesday puts the Nook Tablet and the Kindle Fire at the exact same specs and presumably the exact same price point.

We’ll have to check our local Walmart’s on Wednesday morning.

Rooted: Sony Google TV

February 20th, 2012

If you own a Sony Google TV unit and you’ve been waiting patiently for root access, you may be in luck.  According to our friends at Droid-Life, the rooting process for the Google TV unit takes 4 USB memory sticks and some “GTV know how”, but if you’ve got both of those, you should be in luck.

Kellex over at Droid-Life sums it up best:

“It does involve flashing your system back to a vulnerable software release which then hijacks the upgrade back to a current version to give you a new kernel and root access. That was a mouthful.”

There is a complete walk through for those of you familiar with Google TV (or able to follow instructions), over at Gtvhacker.com.

Here’s what you get for your patience and rooting ability:

  • Modified flash plugin with random per box flash string for Content Provider Bypass.
  • Crippled update feature to prevent box from receiving automatic updates.
  • Completely RW system, cache, and rootfs partitions
  • Full ADB Root
  • Removed signature checks on kernel / init scripts / init binary
  • A few other surprises.
  • BETA: Enable NTFS Support for Sony Google TV devices (see wiki for instructions on how to add: GTVHacker.com: Sony NTFS)
