Why is my Fitbit Versa 4 Not Responding Upon Touching?

There are a lot of possibilities on why some Fitbit watches do not respond to touch or screen swipes. Below are some common reasons why the watch does not react when touched.

Reason #1: Covered/ dirty fingertips.

When users have gloves on or have their hands covered when using the Fitbit Versa watch, it is possible that it would not respond. This is also similar to using the device with dirty hands, the Fitbit Versa might not work upon touch. It is suggested to have hands clean and uncovered when using the device to assure the Fitbit touchscreen would work.

Reason #2: Too much sweat or droplets of water on the screen.

When the Fitbit’s touchscreen is wet, it might cause the device to be unresponsive. Although Fitbit trackers are water-resistant, when droplets of water are on the Fitbit touchscreen, the touchscreen can lose its precision, thus having a struggle in using the Fitbit Versa watch. These droplets can be from rain or even sweat from the user. It is suggested to ensure that the watch, most especially Fitbit’s touchscreen, is dry. This is not a major issue, but such minor flaws can affect the performance of the Fitbit Versa smartwatch.

Reason #3: Corrupted app installed on Fitbit.

The Fitbit Versa 4 watch may freeze unexpectedly. This is sometimes caused by an error in the device’s software or a system bug, thus the device not responding to finger swipes. It is suggested to force restart the device in order to resolve the issue.

Reason #4: Fitbit screen accessories.

Fitbit accessories like screen protectors can affect how the Fitbit reacts when touched. The watch’s screen protectors are an effective material to protect your smartwatch from screen damage. They usually don’t cause a problem unless the protector is too thick or is unfitted correctly. Having the wrong material in the Fitbit Versa watch can be a cause for unresponsiveness.

Reason #5: Damaged Fitbit smartwatch.

Physical damage can also be a reason why the Fitbit Versa watch is not responding. This includes dropping the watch on a hard surface, exposure to extreme temperatures, and vibrations, and pressure from fluids. It is best to get the watch checked and fixed if it has undergone physical damage.

Reason #6: Irregularity on Fitbit system.

If the Fitbit Versa 4 is experiencing a crash on its system, this could cause the Fitbit’s screen to be unresponsive. Because of this irregularity, actions made might be disabled. This can be repaired or a third-party repair tool may be used.

Reason #7: Defective Fitbit Versa 4 device.

Although it is rare to have a defective Fitbit Versa 4 watch, especially when newly purchased, we can’t rule this one out. The Fitbit device you have might be defective and caused the unresponsiveness issue. The defectivity of the watch could be because of a factory defect or due to the owner’s usage.

How to fix Fitbit Versa 4 unresponsive screen?

Listed below are fixes to solve the unresponsive screen problem on the Fitbit Versa 4. Be at liberty to choose which solution works best for your Fitbit watch.

Fix #1: Restarting your Fitbit device.

The unresponsive touchscreen might be just a minor issue. Restarting the watch will clear error processes that might have caused the watch to freeze. It is also suggested to perform a soft reboot/restart before deciding to get it repaired. To restart the smartwatch:

  1. Press and hold the “side” button for about 10-15 seconds until the screen is completely blank.
  2. Release the buttons when the Fitbit logo appears.

Fix #2: Ensure to use the appropriate accessories for the Fitbit smartwatch.

As mentioned above, screen accessories could affect the responsiveness of the watch. The most common screen accessory would be the screen protector. Ensure the screen protector would be fitted correctly to your watch and consider having a watch screen protector that is not that thick that could possibly affect the sensitivity level of the Fitbit’s screen.

Fix #3: Close the newly installed apps on your Fitbit Versa 4.

Apps on the Fitbit Versa 4 might have bugs that caused the issue of unresponsiveness. Such third-party apps can be solved by uninstalling those apps through a smartphone. To delete apps:

  1. Open the Fitbit app on a smartphone.
  2. Tap your Profile picture.
  3. Tap on the Versa 4 icon.
  4. Proceed to Apps.
  5. Find the newly installed app then uninstall it as it may have caused the watch to freeze.

It is encouraged not to install apps from any third-party source. The official Fitbit app is one of the trusted sources to download apps, watch faces, and widgets from for your Fitbit Versa.

Fix #4: Install updates on the Fitbit device and Fitbit app.

An outdated device can also cause the watch to be unresponsive. Fitbit might also have new software updates thus making changes to your device, later making it unresponsive. With these issues, Fitbit regularly releases updates to cater these concerns. Through your smartphone and the Fitbit app, you can update your Fitbit from there.

Update your Fitbit Versa 4 watch by following the guide below:

  1. Charge your Fitbit watch.
  2. Make sure the device is connected to your smartphone via Bluetooth.
  3. Open the Fitbit App on your smartphone.
  4. Tap on your Profile, then tap on your Versa 4 icon.
  5. A pink box with a message would appear if updates are available. Click on the Update button and follow the instructions given.

To update the Fitbit app, follow the instructions listed:

  1. Proceed to the app place (Google Play Store, App Store) where your Fitbit app was downloaded.
  2. Search for “Fitbit”, and check if updates for the app are available.
  3. If an update is available, tap on it, then the update process for the app will start.

Fix #5: Do a factory reset.

If other fixes have not solved the problem or the watch would freeze occasionally, try to perform a factory reset. Consider factory rest as your last resort after everything has failed. A factory reset would delete everything from your Fitbit Versa. This includes data, settings, media files, basically, all of the content on your Fitbit. It is a reminder to do such at your own risk. Before being able to do so, since the device is unresponsive, restart your Fitbit device to be able to do the factory reset function. To restart the device:

After doing such, you can now proceed to factory reset your Fitbit smartwatch. To factory reset your Fitbit device:

  1. From the Fitbit watch screen, scroll down to find the Settings menu.
  2. Tap on the Settings icon.
  3. Scroll down to the bottom, and choose About Versa 4.
  4. Tap on Factory Reset.
  5. To confirm the Factory Reset, select Yes.

Fix #5: Contact Fitbit support.

If none of the fixes above has fixed the unresponsiveness issue, it is suggested to contact Fitbit Customer Support. The issue might be because of a hardware problem, and must be fixed. For physical damages like cracks/breaks, Fitbit can repair it for you.

In Fitbit’s repair policy, products for repair are usually replaced with a refurbished Fitbit model due to the insufficiency of spare parts. These refurbished products can be used to fix the device when repairs are available. However, Fitbit does not retain the data lost in your watch, and also are not responsible for any losses of data from your watch.

1 thought on “How To Fix Fitbit Versa 4 Unresponsive Screen”

  1. Hi. Would like some help with my Versa 4. Its only 3 weeks old. Initially Synced and operated fine but has now suddenly stopped working. I’ve tried everything to restart it and resync it (Bluetooth on my phone on and off, uninstalled Fitbit app and then reinstalled, did the restart for 10 seconds). No pairing code is generated on the watch to enter into the app. When the restart finishes, after the flashing Fitbit logo there’s a large red X that is the last thing I see on the display.
The exact same thing happened to a unit I bought before this one and I returned it.
Thoughts or suggestions ? Thanks, Kevin
