Problem #1: Galaxy Note 4 randomly restarts | Apps on Galaxy Note 4 keeps crashing

My phone randomly restarts a lot and often crashes when I try to open apps. I did a factory reset on the phone and I still seem to be having troubles with it running very slowly and it doesn’t restart as often as it did before the factory reset. however it still does restart occasionally.

I’m also having a lot of trouble with updating the apps to current versions from the factory version of my phone. It took me an hour to update to the current Facebook Messenger and I’m on quite reliable Wi-Fi connection, and it wouldn’t update through my data network.

When I plugged it in the first few times after the factory reset, the screen would stop working and glitch quite a bit, but also doesn’t seem to be doing that now. I’ve had the screen come up completely blank besides the wallpaper a couple times and it won’t load certain apps either (however apps not loading could be that they aren’t the updated version currently).

The battery life seems to be dropping 5-10% every time it restarts.

Phone is updated to the latest Lollipop version 5.1.1 but there is no update for Marshmallow yet on my phone.

I’m with Telus for a provider.

Any apps I’ve downloaded are popular apps (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Colour Switch, Make 7!, etc.) and I couldn’t imagine that those would be a cause of the problems.

I also haven’t downloaded any music within the past week or so or otherwise.

Any idea what would be wrong? — Kass

Solution: Hi Kass. The rule of thumb when troubleshooting an Android device is to go with basic software troubleshooting first. If issues remain after you’ve exhausted all software solutions, you can assume that there’s a hardware issue behind them. We noticed that you’ve already performed a factory reset, which we say is the last software troubleshooting step that you can do. That nothing changes after doing a factory reset doesn’t mean that a hardware issue is to blame. We suggest that you do another round of factory reset and observe the device as long as you can without installing any app. This will help you tell if the restart problem is due to an app or not.

A reliable internet does not necessarily mean a faster internet connection speed. Try to update your apps using a known fast internet Wi-Fi network to see if the slow update issue is due to a phone problem or to a slow internet connection.

If doing these things won’t change issues a bit, consider getting another battery. Doing so may fix the restart and battery drain issues.

Finally, if a new battery doesn’t seem to be the solution, consider getting a replacement phone.

Problem #2: Galaxy Note 4 keeps restarting, freezing, and lagging

This is my sister’s old phone that she was having issues with restarting, lagging, and freezing. I had done a factory reset on the device and without installing any other additional apps to the phone the problem still persist. i switched the SD card from an 8GB to a 32GB Sandisk ultra micro SDHC. Nothing changed… sometimes the operating system won’t work and i get a notification saying to wait or close it.

I’m not able to setup the finger print reader, and cannot when i try to update the operating system it says “software update is temporarily unavailable. try again later.” I know when you polish a turd it’s still a turd but just have hopes to resurrect this turd!

Hope to hear back from you soon with some helpful info! — Patrick

Solution: Hi Patrick. We need a full history of a device in order to be effective so we doubt if there’s any other thing that we can tell that will work. As mentioned to Kass above, if software solutions won’t work, that’s a clear indication that you have a hardware issue at hand. If nothing appears to change even after the phone is fresh after a factory reset, you are out of luck.

Also, if your phone happens to run a custom ROM or if it’s rooted, we recommend that you try to revert all software back to stock. This might very well be your ticket to resolution.

Problem #3: Galaxy Note 4 randomly restart and does not work when it’s not charging

The phone keeps shutting off and tries to restart but can’t. It just goes to the Samsung Galaxy screen then shuts off and repeats itself. Sometimes on rare occasions it turns on and last for a few minutes. It only works when I’m charging it, but sometimes even when it’s charging, it shuts off. I looked at the phone status and battery health says good. I bought a new battery and this one works just fine, even though it’s not from Samsung. That battery also says battery health is good. So I am confused when both of them say it is good but the original Samsung one is not working? Maybe it is something wrong with the phone? Also the new battery I bought is at a much higher temperature than the original. It’s about 37°c and the original was about 32° c. I want to know why this issue keeps happening! — Alex

Solution: Hi Alex. Either your phone is overheating, which results to random restart, or there’s a hardware issue that we don’t know of. That the system appears to show both batteries are in good health can be an indicator of a problem.

To troubleshoot, you can start by booting your phone in safe mode. Booting Galaxy Note 4 in safe mode will temporarily disable all third-party or download apps leaving pre-installed ones and core services running. This procedure can help you determine which of your apps is causing a problem.

  • Turn off the phone completely.
  • Press and hold the Power key and the Volume Down key.
  • When the phone starts to boot, release the Power key but continue holding the Volume Down key until the phone finished restarting.
  • Safe mode will be display at the lower left corner; you may release the Volume Down key now.

Once the device is in safe mode, observe the phone for several hours to know if the phone continues to randomly restart, or still not charging correctly.

If the issues remain, do a factory reset. Here’s how:

  • Turn off the Galaxy Note 4 completely.
  • Press and hold the Volume Up and the Home keys together, then press and hold the Power key.
  • When the Note 4 vibrates, release both the Home and Power keys but continue holding the Volume Up key.
  • When the Android System Recovery shows on the screen, release the Volume Up key.
  • Using the Volume Down key, highlight ‘wipe data / factory reset’ and press the Power key to select it.
  • Now highlight ‘Yes — delete all user data’ using the Volume Down key and press the Power key to begin the reset.
  • When the master reset is complete, highlight ‘Reboot system now’ and hit the Power key.
  • The Note 4 will restart but it will be longer than usual. When it reaches the Home screen, then begin your setup.

Again, you need to observe the phone for hours. If the issues persist, you’ll know that you have a phone problem.

Problem #4: Galaxy Note 4 won’t restart and keeps on freezing

For about 1.5 months I’ve been having various issues with my phone. It seems to freeze up when there is inactivity or freeze when it feels like it, randomly. I have to do a soft reset to get the phone to turn on. Usually there is an Android icon that appears on the phone and it says “it’s downloading” and not to restart the phone, which I have to do, because it just stays stuck on the android icon. it also says “error booting”.

I have tried to do a factory reset, which can never be completed, because the phone won’t restart itself. Also, I can’t do the latest software update because it won’t restart the phone after it uploads the update information.

I’ve dumped most every application that I can, and deleted pictures, texts, videos, anything to clear up the memory space.  Also, I have repeatedly cleared the phone’s cache. I don’t know what else I can try.

The phone is too expensive to replace, and I don’t have “insurance.”  The phone is also over a year old. I can usually get the phone to work again after a soft reset (removing the battery, depressing the power button, waiting a moment, then replacing the battery). I may have to do a soft reset at least 3 times a day because the phone just locks up. Any different suggestions?

Also, is there a different way to do a factory/hard reset, that doesn’t require the phone to restart itself? (Also, phone cannot be set to restart itself, will only power off.  I also tried the volume up/down and depressing the power button at the same time, which didn’t work at all. Please help. — Angie

Solution: Hi Angie. If your device refuses to restart normally, then there’s no way that you can update your phone or a factory reset. The system needs a complete powercycle in order to make the changes stick.

The only thing that you can try right now is to manually install a stock ROM, especially if your device is rooted or running a non-stock firmware. Otherwise, you simply have to suck it up and make do with what you have.

Problem #5: Galaxy Note 4 won’t boot up normally and randomly turning on and off

Well it all started with my note 4 randomly turning on and off and booting into Odin mode without me initializing it (not able to boot normally error etc). so I did a factory reset and thought that would fix it, but it was all to no avail… Searching online i came across how to actually use odin mode and how it would be fix by downloading the official firmware and re-installing it with odin. I did just that and it fixed it! For a couple of days that is.

It started doing the same thing, so well i did the same thing, but this time while doing it in odin i got “error” and in the phone i would get a “a firmware error update occurred, please go to recovery in Samsung Kies” and i’ve been wanting to try that but now my phone won’t even turn on.

I did all the helpful steps you provided (taking the battery in and out, waiting a couple of minutes/seconds, etc) but it just won’t turn on. I started to think that it might be completely dead, BUT it is somewhat recognized by my PC when i connected it. I truly don’t understand this and i really hope you could help me :/ Thank You. — Nick

Solution: Hi Nick. Well, we need to make the phone to turn back on first. If that’s not possible, then there’s really no moving forward with your case. Needless to say, our first priority is by making the phone power back on. Since we can’t perform any software troubleshooting obviously, we need to look into the hardware aspect. Have the hardware checked. You probably want to make sure first that the hardware buttons are working fine. Have the phone checked by Samsung or any qualified shop so a full hardware diagnostics can be performed.

Samsung Galaxy Note 4 Freezes, Lags

The #Samsung Galaxy #Note4 has one of the best hardware specifications available for a smartphone in the market today. Its Snapdragon 805 processor combined with 3GB of RAM ensures that apps run smoothly. There are however instances when this isn’t the case. Some of our readers are complaining that their phone is running slow, lags, or freezes when they are using it. These issues are what we will tackle in today’s post.

Note 4 Half The Screen Freezes

Problem: Half the screen freezes, it splits vertically and the right half is frozen. Sometimes when first looking at it the right half is completely off.  The left half remains fully functional. Thanks

Solution: Let’s start by checking your phone software first as this is usually the cause in cases like this. The first thing you need to do is to check if this issue is caused by some form of corrupt data in your phone. To do this you need to start your device in recovery mode then wipe its cache partition. This procedure deletes the temporary data held in your device. Restart your phone then check if the issue still occurs.

If the problem still persists then the next thing you need to check is if an app you downloaded is causing this problem. To check if this is the case you need to start your phone in Safe Mode. In this mode only the pre-installed apps are allowed to run while the apps you downloaded are disabled. Check if the issue still occurs.

If the problem still occurs in Safe Mode then I suggest you backup your phone data first. I suggest you use Kies or Smart Switch to do the backup. Once the backup is complete proceed by performing a factory reset.

If after the reset the issue remains unresolved then this may already be a hardware related problem possibly caused by a defective display. You need to bring your phone to an authorized service center and have it  checked.

Note 4 Lag When Using Phone

Problem:  am experiencing significant lag. When I use an app or service, like camera, my phone thinks so hard that it takes many seconds to recover, it almost freezes at the time. If I wait long enough it does recover, but it has become so slow. When I am typing a text message, I type and my typing gets ahead of what’s showing. When I try to scroll between home pages it freezes as well. I have tried a soft reboot, but I am at a loss for what could be the problem. Do you have any suggestions?

Solution: In most cases the phone lag is caused by corrupt temporary data stored in the phone. To check if this is what’s affecting your phone you should start your phone in recovery mode and wipe its cache partition.

Restart your phone then check if the lag issue still occurs. If it does then try taking out the microSD card of your phone ( if you have one installed) then check if the lag issue still occurs. A faulty microSD card makes it difficult for the phone to access data stored in it which may also cause the lagging issue.

Another factor than can cause the phone to lag is if there are too many apps running in the background. Try to restart your phone then observe if the lag issue still occurs.

An app that you downloaded and installed into your phone can also cause this type of problem. To check if this is the case you just need to start your phone in Safe Mode. In this mode only the pre-installed apps are allowed to run while apps you downloaded are disabled. If your phone does not lag in this mode then the problem is most likely caused by a third party app. Find out what app this is and uninstall it.

Finally, if the above troubleshooting steps fail I suggest you backup your phone data then do a factory reset.

Note 4 Freezes

Problem: Device will freeze when you just unlocked it (20-30 seconds) while doing something like typing a text.

Solution: A phone will usually freeze if it has some form of corrupt data. Try wiping the cache partition of your phone first from recovery mode and see if this resolves the problem.

If the problem still persists then try taking out the microSD card of your device (if you installed one). If this card is faulty it can cause this freezing issue.

You should also check if a certain app you installed is causing this problem. To check if this is the case just start your phone in Safe Mode. In this mode only the pre-installed apps are allowed to run while apps you downloaded are disabled. If your phone does not freeze in this mode then you should find out what app is causing this problem and uninstall it.

If the above troubleshooting steps fail to resolve the problem then I suggest you backup your phone data then do a factory reset.

Note 4 Crashes, Freezes

Problem: Hi, I came across your site. This may be my last glimpse of hope.I updated to 5.1.1 recently via OTA update. Things were fine for about a few days. Suddenly, my phone keeps randomly rebooting, frequently crashes and freezing. Often when I power down, I cannot power up, and had to resort to taking out battery, doing soft reset, then power up. I’m suspecting this to be the software. But after doing factory reset and wiping of cache partition, my phone would hang when I’m plugged into the charger. There would be a black screen and nothing comes up when I press the buttons. What exactly happened? I’m really at a loss and phone is out of warranty. Does this mean my phone is bricked? Really really would appreciate your reply and thanks in advance.

Solution: It looks like the problem could either be caused by the battery or the charger. Try using a different charger when charging your phone. Make sure to also replace the USB charging cord. If the issue is still the same then I suggest you get a new battery.

Note 4 Lags

Problem: Lagging, keyboard sticking as i type this. Scrolling issues, i tried all recommendations and even safe mode and still has issues in safe mode. The phone is very fast but with issues. Thank You

Solution: Try wiping the cache partition of your phone first from the recovery mode. This deletes the temporary data stored in your phone and will usually resolve issues such as this.

If the problem persists then I suggest you backup your phone data then do a factory reset.

Note 4 Constantly Freezing, Lagging

Problem: Constantly freezing, lagging, shutting down, and difficult to use. I have wiped the cache partition, removed the micro-SD and deleted as many apps in case it has been a storage problem; none of which have worked.

Solution: The phone software may already be corrupt which is why you are experiencing these issues. I suggest you backup your phone data and do a factory reset using the hardware keys. This brings your phone back to its original factory condition and should eliminate these issues.
