Mobile devices are one of the fastest selling products in the market today which is why lots of manufacturers want a slice of the pie. AMD, a company best known for making processors for computers, has recently announced that it has developed its very first chip based on ARM technology. It is called the AMD Opteron A1100 Series and it packs some serious power.
AMD however won’t be using the chip on mobile devices but instead use it on servers. Even if ARM processors are what’s being used by most smartphones and tablets in the market the company would like to concentrate first on the server market before making a shift to consumer products. It’s no secret that AMD is supporting the initiative to run Android on Windows by creating a hybrid processor that has both x86 and ARM chips. This first ARM-based processor of the company is a step forward in its entry in to the mobile market.
AMD Opteron A1100 Series Features
- 4 or 8 core ARM Cortex-A57 processors
- Up to 4 MB of shared L2 and 8 MB of shared L3 cache
- Configurable dual DDR3 or DDR4 memory channels with ECC at up to 1866 MT/second
- Up to 4 SODIMM, UDIMM or RDIMMs
- 8 lanes of PCI-Express Gen 3 I/O
- 8 Serial ATA 3 ports
- 2 10 Gigabit Ethernet ports
- ARM TrustZone technology for enhanced security
- Crypto and data compression co-processors
According to Suresh Gopalakrishnan, corporate vice president and general manager of the AMD server business unit, “The needs of the data center are changing. A one-size-fits-all approach typically limits efficiency and results in higher-cost solutions. The new ARM-based AMD Opteron A-Series processor brings the experience and technology portfolio of an established server processor vendor to the ARM ecosystem and provides the ideal complement to our established AMD Opteron x86 server processors.”
The AMD Opteron A1100 Series is one of the first 64-bit chips to be based on the ARM Cortex-A57 architecture. It is going to be available in quad core and octa core versions and will start shipping this sometime this year.
This latest ARM product of AMD will most likely be competing with Intel’s low-powered Atom chips that are being used in laptops, servers, desktops, and even in Android mobile devices.
