Problem #1: Galaxy S7 keeps restarting and won’t boot normally
S7 edge experienced black out and required force restart 2 weeks back. Just today, 7th of March, it constantly restarted every 10 -20 minutes for about 5 times. And I did a factory reset. It lasted for 2 hours and I decided to force restart and start safe mode.
In safe mode, it was constantly stuck and showed a ‘unlock’ logo. Followed by restarting and back to safe mode. This process kept going on for awhile.
Finally, it worked for a few minutes. And then it was back to displaying on and off ‘Samsung Galaxy S7 edge’ on the phone. Then I tried holding volume up, home and power key. I pressed volume up to continue. And now it shows ‘down loading. .. do not turn off target’ and hasn’t been responding for quite awhile. Will deeply appreciate your help. — Rachel
Solution: Hi Rachel. Restarting in safe mode and factory reset are two of known effective ways to fix a random reboot issue due to a software glitch. That your phone continues to show similar problem after performing the two procedures is proof that the problem is not caused by software at all.
We don’t have a comprehensive history of your device so we can’t even say what hardware problem may be causing the issue. The fact that the phone won’t even boot normally is strong enough evidence that this is something that you can’t fix via software tweaks. If it’s still under warranty, make sure that you let Samsung check the hardware so they can assess whether a repair would suffice or not. If possible, try to skip repair and simply demand for a replacement unit. It’s more effective and does not take a long time to fulfill.
Problem #2: Galaxy S7 edge Gmail app differs from desktop Gmail app
I use Google email thru a corporate account thru my job. I just got a Galaxy S7 Edge. The Gmail app does display with my Primary Inbox like I have it set up on the desktop. However another setting does not display the same on my phone. I have it set up thru Gmail to: Preview Pane: Mark a conversation as read: “after 3 seconds.” This feature does not appear to display the same way on my S7 Edge. All messages appear to be unread on my phone. No fading of the emails which are read. — Crystal
Solution: Hi Crystal. We don’t think we’re getting the full picture of what you’re trying to paint here. Keep in mind that a PC app for the same service may have features that will not be available on a mobile app. Android software environment is different from a Windows or iOS software environment so apps for the same service as Gmail may vary in some features.
Kindly talk to Gmail technical support or visit the Gmail Help Forum for assistance. When describing your problem, make sure to give as many details as possible to help other users or technician to understand what you’re trying to say easily.
Problem #3: Galaxy S7 mobile data stopped working after Android Nougat was installed
Hi! I am at my wit’s end. I have a Samsung Galaxy S7 purchased from Target under AT&T. I recently switched to T-Mobile (phone is paid off and unlocked). Everything was working well until my husband downloaded the Nougat Update. Since then, the Internet has not been working. I can text and make calls but only get Internet through WIFI. I did extensive diagnostic work with T-Mobile, all the way to doing a master factory reset. In the end, they said the phone itself is the problem.
I went to Samsung and they determined it must be a frequency issue between AT&T and T-Mobile because it worked fine when an AT&T SIM card was popped in. The Best Buy guy reflashed/redownloaded Nougat and then amen, Internet started working. It worked great for a day but now it’s back again to not working. The only thing I did was to add apps and insert an EVO SD card. It’s not a SIM card issue because I popped in another T-Mobile SIM card and it’s not working either. I really don’t know what to do. HELP! — Susan
Solution: Hi Susan. It’s clearly not a frequency issue because you’re phone worked after it was reflashed. This means that its hardware is capable of working with the operating frequency of T-Mobile network in your area. That leaves you with a software issue, which means that one of the apps you installed may be to blame. In this situation, we want you to make sure first that the system cache is refreshed by wiping the cache partition. Sometimes, installing apps or updates can corrupt the system cache resulting to all kinds of problems. To fix that, you must wipe the cache partition first. Here’s how:
- Turn off your Samsung Galaxy S7.
- Press and then hold the Home and Volume UP keys, then press and hold the Power key.
- When the Samsung Galaxy S7 shows on the screen, release the Power key but continue holding the Home and Volume Up keys.
- When the Android logo shows, you may release both keys and leave the phone be for about 30 to 60 seconds.
- Using the Volume Down key, navigate through the options and highlight ‘wipe cache partition.’
- Once highlighted, you may press the Power key to select it.
- Now highlight the option ‘Yes’ using the Volume Down key and press the Power button to select it.
- Wait until your phone is finished doing the Master Reset. Once completed, highlight ‘Reboot system now’ and press the Power key.
- The phone will now reboot longer than usual.
Once the phone has restarted, turn the internet back on and see if it’s working. If it still does not work, your next troubleshooting step would be to observe the phone while it’s booted to safe mode.
Safe mode is a diagnostic mode similar to Windows safe mode version. In android, safe mode blocks third party apps and services from running so it should tell if a third party app is to blame. To restart your S7 to safe mode, kindly follow these steps:
- Turn your Galaxy S7 off.
- Press and hold the Power button.
- Once the ‘Samsung Galaxy S7’ logo appears, release the Power key and immediately press and hold the Volume Down button.
- Continue holding the button until the phone finishes rebooting.
- Once you see the text “Safe mode” at the bottom left corner of the screen, release the Volume Down button.
- Observe the phone for 24 hours so you’ll notice a difference. If mobile data works normally in this mode, that’s a confirmation of our hunch that one of the apps is to blame. You must then uninstall all third party apps one by one, making sure to observe how the phone behaves after removing each one. This procedure will take time but it’s an effective way to fix an issue like this.
Problem #4: Galaxy S7 edge “start up failed please try again” error after Nougat update
My auntie updated her Galaxy S7 Edge tonight with the new Nougat through AT&T. After the update everything worked on her phone as normal with the new update look except her calendar, contacts, and messages apps. When she tries to open them it says “start up failed. please try again.” I am afraid to ask her to do a hard reset in fear of her losing her information and apps. I updated my phone two days ago with no issue. Is this an update issue or a phone issue? — Jeffery
Solution: Hi Jeffrey. There’s no way to tell if this is a problem due to poor update coding, or if it’s a phone issue. We suggest though that you do the basic software troubleshooting such as wiping the cache partition, deleting an app’s cache and data, and full factory reset. If the phone is not set to automatically install app updates, you must also make sure that all apps are compatible and updated.
For reference, below are the steps on how to do the solutions mentioned:
- Wipe cache partition
- Delete an apps cache and data (must be done for all mentioned apps)
- Open the Settings menu either through your notification shade (drop-down) or through the Settings app in your app drawer.
- Navigate down to “Apps”. This may be renamed to something like Applications or Application Manager in OEM skinned versions of Android 6.0.
- Once in there, click on an application.
- You’ll now see a list of stuff that gives you information about the app, including Storage, Permissions, Memory Use, and more. These are all clickable items. You’ll want to click on Storage.
- You should now clearly see the Clear Data and Clear Cache buttons for the application.
- Factory reset
- From the Home screen, tap the Apps icon.
- Find and tap Settings and then touch Backup and reset.
- Tap Factory data reset and touch Reset device.
- If you have screen lock feature turned on, enter your password or PIN.
- Touch Continue.
- Tap Delete all to confirm your action.
NOTE: Factory reset will erase all user data such as photos, videos, contacts, and other types of files stored in the phone’s primary storage device. Make sure to create a backup before doing it. If you have a computer, you can use Samsung Smart Switch to back up your files.
Problem #5: Galaxy S7 edge stuck in Samsung logo screen
Hello DroidGuy. I have an year old Samsung S7 Edge mobile and 2 days back it stopped working. If i switch on the phone i could see “Samsung Galaxy S7 edge” logo and then it turns off immediately. Tried multiple times but experiencing the same issue.
Also, when the logo is displayed i could see green lines running horizontally all over the screen. I have dropped my mobile 2-3 times sometime back but it was working fine until this issue popped off out of nowhere.
I tried to boot the mobile in safe mode by holding down the volume down and power buttons but the moment i release the power button the screen turns off. Could not get it boot into safe mode.
I took it to Samsung Authorised service center to check whether it is a hardware issue or software/firmware issue but they say they will try factory reset first and go on to next steps based on that. I did not opt for that as i was informed that it will wipe out all the data in my phone and I have lot of data that I don’t want to lose unless there is no option at all. Please provide if you have any suggestions. — Praveen
Solution: Hi Praveen. Because your phone no longer restarts normally, you have very little choice in terms of troubleshooting. At this point, all you can do is to see if you can restart it to different boot modes (safe mode, recovery mode, and Odin mode) so you can then try follow up troubleshooting. Now, since you’ve already tried booting to safe mode (and you said it was not successful), your two other options only include recovery mode and Odin mode. Under recovery mode, you can try to wipe the cache partition and factory reset, while in Odin mode, flashing a stock firmware. If Samsung service center recommended that a factory reset, that means that wiping the cache partition did not help at all. Both factory reset and flashing will erase files on the phone so there’s really no way to go. If you want to know if the issue can be fixed, you must try factory reset first.
Problem #6: Galaxy S7 won’t charge
My Galaxy S7 won’t charge anymore. It always had problems with charger cords, but now it thinks that any charger cord I use isn’t the right kind and automatically goes to dock. I always just used the USB port on the side of my Chromebook, and it would be buggy. Sometimes it would have to be at a certain angle, or I would have to reset my phone. I did accidentally put it in a load of laundry I was doing and figured that out after 2-5 minutes. I put it in rice and I’m thinking either the water may have done something or some rice is stuck in there. Though, I really don’t think rice would interfere? I have tried other chargers. A wall plug charger and a computer USB port charger. Both did the same Docking thing(which automatically shuts off your battery or something? It put a little red X on my litter battery percentage thing). Even when I unplug the charger, its still Docking. Please, please help. Really don’t want to get another phone.. By the way, I’m not sure what the selection the Android Version with all the sweet treat choices is? Is it on the battery or case?? I just put other. — Kassidy
Solution: Hi Kassidy. If your phone does not recognize any charger at this time, that’s probably because of a bad charging port. Try to do the basic software troubleshooting or a factory reset and see if it will change anything. If the phone continues to refuse to charge, send it in for repair or replacement.
Problem #7: Galaxy S7 with hardware trouble has screen not responding issue
I dropped my phone in Oct 2016 and cracked the screen. It fell about 1 1/2 feet. The phone worked fine and I had screen replaced in Dec 2016. I dropped off at a local Batteries Plus store and within 2 weeks phone progressively got worse. It started with screen not responding and then phone would shut down and I would have to reboot about 14 plus times a day. And the screen started flickering. I took phone back in Feb 2017 and was advised screen was replaced again. I could immediately feel the phone hard to respond to my fingers when using. So I hoped it was something that would just break itself in after use. The bottom screen beside home button on screen does not respond to my touch and all the way across screen at bottom cannot open apps. When I called them back said they just replace screens and I should take to authorized dealer and have them look at it and only thing they could do is possibly refund my $. I reiterated phone worked before they changed screens. Any suggestions? Thank you. Sincerely. — Brenda
Solution: Hi Brenda. Taken all together, the symptoms you mentioned are consistent with a phone having a hardware malfunction so there’s really nothing much that we can do to help. You must either push that the phone be repaired properly this time, or that it be replaced. We don’t think you sent the phone to a Samsung service center so there’s no easy here for you but if you can work with the service center that worked on your phone, that would be great.
Problem #8: Galaxy S7 stopped charging
Hi there. i saw almost all your posts about Galaxy S7 charging problem but didn’t found a good solution.
My phone worked properly for about a year. Last week it just stopped charging.
It didn’t shut off or something, just didn’t charged. when battery went to 0%, i’ve tried again to plug it to the charger, and it showed the battery charging sign for about 5 sec and then it disappears. I’ve tried other cables or other ports, tried cleaning the charger and the phone USB port, tried soft boot by pressing and holding the Power button and Volume down button for at least 10 seconds. It didn’t helped.
I don’t know how but when i left the phone, before went to 0, plugged with USB cable to computer for about 5 minutes, it started charging.
When the battery drained again, it didn’t work again.
Now with some luck, sometimes it’s charging and sometimes doesn’t and only shows the battery sign for short time. Please, try figure out something. Appreciating and Expecting to your answer. — Yuval
Solution: Hi Yuval. This hit and run charging problem is most probably due to a bad charging port so there’s very little to nothing that you can try at this point. As far as troubleshooting is concerned, a user like you are limited to doing basic software stuff like wiping the cache partition, safe mode, factory reset, and sometimes, flashing stock firmware. If the issue persists after doing these troubleshooting steps, you can try to check the charging port with the help of a magnifying glass to see if there’s a bent pin or lint that prevents good contact with the charger. If nothing happens after that, you must assume that an unknown hardware issue must be behind the trouble. Sometimes, a bad power IC is to blame for an issue like this so it almost always leads to repair or replacement. Contact Samsung and see if your phone is still in warranty. If it’s not, then repair with them will become a paid one so be ready to invest a few hundred dollars for the fee. In case a component like a battery needs replacement, the fee can get even higher.
