My Samsung Galaxy s9 was working fine and i was on Instagram then the screen started going crazy and looked split into like 100ths and I clicked the home button and saw the home screen then it was tiny and and in like 100 rectangles down the screen and the phone started getting hot so I tried to turn it off and then the screen just went went black but it isn’t off when you press the home button the back button and other button light up and the notification light is flashing because I’ve gotten some texts (I heard the text noise still) and the screen seems to respond when it is touched (vibration).
Solution: Looks like you have a toast screen. The signs you mentioned are consistent with a dying or failing screen assembly. This is not a problem with the motherboard as your phone is not completely dead. In fact, it still is working because it continues to make some sound and vibrates when touching the screen.
Perform a forced reboot
In case the screen has simply suffered a hiccup, try to simulate the effect of pulling out the battery to refresh the system. This procedure is called forced reboot. Here’s how it’s done:
- Press and hold the Power + Volume Down buttons for approximately 10 seconds or until the device power cycles. Allow several seconds for the Maintenance Boot Mode screen to appear.
- From the Maintenance Boot Mode screen, select Normal Boot. You can use the volume buttons to cycle through the available options and the lower left button (below the volume buttons) to select. Wait for up to 90 seconds for the reset to complete.
Run device to alternate boot modes (Recovery or Odin)
If nothing works after attempting a forced reboot, the other troubleshooting step to do is to restart the device to either Recovery Mode or Odin Mode or both. If the screen works in any of these software environments, there must be a problem with Android operating system.
How to boot a Galaxy S9 to Recovery Mode
- Turn off the device. This is important. If you can’t turn it off, you’ll never be able to boot to Recovery Mode. If you are not able to shut the device off regularly via the Power button, wait until the phone’s battery is drained. Then, charge the phone for 30 minutes before booting to Recovery Mode.
- Press and hold the Volume Up key and the Bixby key, then press and hold the Power key.
- When the green Android logo displays, release all keys (‘Installing system update’ will show for about 30 – 60 seconds before showing the Android system recovery menu options).
How to boot a Galaxy S9 to Downlod Mode
- Turn off the device. This is important. If you can’t turn it off, you’ll never be able to boot to Recovery Mode. If you are not able to shut the device off regularly via the Power button, wait until the phone’s battery is drained. Then, charge the phone for 30 minutes before booting to Recovery Mode.
- Press and hold the Volume Down key and the Bixby key, then press and hold the Power key.
- You’ll know if you’re on Download Mode when you see a screen that says “Downloading….”
