Problem 1: Galaxy Note 4 won’t install Android Nougat
Hello good day sir/ma’am. I use a Note 4 Samsung and I tried forcing a 7.0 update on it using system but failed. Though my phone still functions fine with the 6.1 update but the problem now is I can no longer update the phone. Each time I tried, the response I get is “Software Update The operating system on your device has been modified in an unauthorised way. Try downloading software updates using Smart Switch on your PC or visit a customer service centre. ” So I don’t know if hard formating it would solve the problem. — Clinton
Solution: Hi Clinton. As of this writing, we are not aware of any carrier or Samsung rolling out an official Android Nougat update for the Note 4. With the next Android iteration coming out (Android O/ 8.0), we doubt if Samsung will bother updating the current crop of Note 4 devices to Nougat at all. The initial list of devices that Samsung released earlier this year did not include the Galaxy Note 4. Samsung does not usually include older devices when the latest Android version is released and unfortunately, the Note 4 may not receive Android Nougat at all.
If you really want the Nougat experience in your Note 4, we suggest that you use a custom ROM instead. We haven’t tested any custom ROM for our own Note 4 so we can’t validate which one works fine. Keep in mind that custom ROMs can be buggy compared to official Android version so if you’ll encounter problems with one, you can either try a different ROM, or simply revert to the official firmware.
Problem 2: Galaxy Note 4 won’t turn on, stuck in AT&T logo screen after an update
The phone will not completely turn on. When I turn the phone on it goes to the symbol of AT&T and is stuck there — won’t do-nothing. so I have to take the battery out for to be turned off.
It started doing this after the software update and I’ve already done a soft hard restart and also done a hard restart. basically cleans everything out of it and still nothing. — Shortygirll30
Solution: Hi Shortygirll30. Updates usually lead to problems as there are a lot of things that can go wrong in Android environment. Since we don’t know the complete history of your device, there’s no way we can tell you what exactly is going on. In order to try and fix the current situation though, we recommend that you restart the phone to Recovery Mode. Once you’re in Recovery, you can then try to wipe the cache partition first. This will force the phone to delete the system cache, which must have become corrupted. A corrupted system cache can lead to all sorts of problems including, sometimes, a boot loop issue like the one you’re experiencing. If wiping the cache partition won’t work, you can then try a factory reset. Below are the steps on how to boot your Note 4 to Recovery Mode:
- Charge the phone for at least 30 minutes.
- Press and then hold the Home and Volume UP keys, then press and hold the Power key.
- When the Samsung Galaxy logo shows on the screen, release the Power key but continue holding the Home and Volume Up keys.
- When the Android logo shows, you may release both keys and leave the phone be for about 30 to 60 seconds.
- You can either wipe the cache partition or do a factory reset when in this mode.
Sometimes, a phone enters boot loop situation after a failed update. If factory reset via Recovery won’t help, you should attempt to reflash the bootloader. Now, flashing guides can vary slightly among phone models so we suggest that you look for a good one first. Not following a good guide can lead to problems, including something that might seriously impair the software. Try to visit other websites that allows you to interact with other users who may have already tried flashing their own Note 4 device. This will allow you to get first hand advice on what guide to follow.
In general, flashing a bootloader is as simple as following any software modification. Below are the sample steps on how to do it. The exact steps may be slightly different in your phone model. The steps below are only for demonstration purposes only.
- Look for the correct firmware for your phone model and download it. Make sure that you select the right one. It should be the same exact firmware that ran previously on your device. We assume that you list down the firmware version somewhere. If you did not take note of it before, there’s a chance that you may pick the wrong one. As you may know now, using an incorrect firmware can cause complications so good luck with that.
- Let’s now say that you have identified the correct firmware. You then want to download it to your computer. The firmware file should have a bunch of files in it like AP_, BL_, CSC_, etc.
- Look for the file that starts with a label BL; this should be the corresponding bootloader file for this firmware. Once you’ve identified the bootloader file, copy it to your computer’s desktop or to any other folder that you can easily access.
- Proceed with the rest of the flashing procedure using the Odin program.
- In Odin, click on the BL tab and make sure to use the bootloader file you’ve identified earlier.
- Now, make sure that the “Device Added” status and its “ID:COM box” has turned blue before hitting the START button. This will initiate the flashing of your phone’s bootloader.
- Restart the phone once the procedure is finished.
Problem 3: Galaxy Note 4 email app won’t update
I am so frustrated with not knowing how to operate this mobile. I have a Samsung Note 4. It won’t upload emails constantly. I can access the internet but it won’t update all my emails .. I think in frustration ..I may have added another default email address and now neither work. I don’t know I’ve been struggling for weeks like this. Please help me. — Lori.g33
Solution: Hi Lori.g33. We don’t know what exactly is happening but if you’re having trouble sending or receiving email messages, these are the few steps that you can try.
First, you want to ensure that you there’s no internet connection issue when you’re trying to send and/or receive emails. If you rely on mobile data connection all the time, be sure that the service is reliable. The same is true when you’re on wifi. We know that you said you have internet connection but sometimes, an intermittent connection problem can result to poor email performance.
Secondly, if you are new to Android, you should do what everybody should do when faced with new things or environment — try to learn more. You must spend some time doing extra research on how to use your emails in your phone. Samsung can only make their devices user friendly so much. If you are not used to Android at this time, try to watch Youtube videos and/or read some literature on how to use email in your phone. We’re pretty sure email usage in a Note 4 is not rocket science and even first time Android users can manage just fine. That if your concern is about familiarity.
Thirdly, if you’re encountering a specific problem or error when using your email, you must try to do the basic stuff. In this case, we want you to begin by wiping the email app’s cache and data. Here’s how:
- Open the Settings menu either through your notification shade (drop-down) or through the Settings app in your app drawer.
- Navigate down to “Apps”. This may be renamed to something like Applications or Application Manager in OEM skinned versions of Android 6 or 7.
- Once in there, click on an application.
- You’ll now see a list of stuff that gives you information about the app, including Storage, Permissions, Memory Use, and more.
- These are all clickable items. You’ll want to click on Storage.
- You should now clearly see the Clear Cache and Clear Data buttons for the application. Try to wipe the app’s cache first. Once you’ve done that, try to see if your email will now update. If nothing works, repeat the steps 1-6 then hit the Clear Data
Doing the Clear Data option will return the email app settings to defaults, which means that you’ll have to add your email account again afterwards.
Lastly, if the steps above won’t fix your issue, we suggest that you revert software settings back to their known working state via factory reset. This will ensure that you eliminate possible bug causing the problem. Here’s how that’s done:
- Create a backup of your important files such as photos, videos, contacts etc. You can use Smart Switch for this task.
- From the Home screen, tap the Apps icon.
- Launch Settings and scroll to ‘User and Backup’ section.
- Tap Backup and reset.
- If you want, you can tick the checkboxes next to Automatic restore and Back up my data.
- Tap Factory data reset.
- Touch Reset device.
- You may be asked to enter your PIN or Password.
- Tap Continue and then Delete all.
