How To Fix Samsung Galaxy J7 Stuck In Initializing Update Screen

Problem: Good afternoon, Today I am experiencing some issues with my Samsung J7. The first issue I had was it turned off completely which has happened once or twice in the past but never been an area of concern normally I am able to just hit the power button and it will restart. I did attempt to troubleshoot it using all of the methods mentioned in one of your articles on what to do if your screen goes black unexpectedly and will not turn back on. One of the ones I was actually getting somewhere with was holding down the home button, power button, and volume up button then it would say scanning for reboot or something like that.. the next step in that process was to hold down the volume down key until I was able to do a system recovery well I tried that a few times and then my phone did something else. It is now saying initializing system update with a blue screen and the little droid guy. The only thing I had done differently today than any other day is accidentally hit an app that I haven’t used pretty much since it was installed for sound effects aside from that the phone had been running smoothly. I am not sure if this helps and if you have any other questions please feel free to contact me. I really would like to try everything before I have to do a factory reset. I really hope you can help! Thanks

Solution: Before troubleshooting this particular problem you should first make sure to fully charge the phone. If necessary connect the phone to its wall charger and let it charge first. If your phone has a microSD card installed then you should remove this before proceeding with the troubleshooting steps listed below.

Perform a soft reset

The first thing you will need to do in this case is a soft reset. This will usually resolve issues caused by minor software glitches as the phone software will be refreshed.

  • Press and hold the Power and Volume down key for up to 45 seconds.
  • Wait as the device restarts.

Check if the phone can successfully boot up.

Check if the issue occurs in Safe Mode

There are instances when an app you downloaded can cause this particular issue. To check if this is the case you will have to start the phone in Safe Mode as only the pre-installed apps are allowed to run in this mode.

  • Turn the device off.
  • Press and hold the Power key past the screen with the device name.
  • When ‘SAMSUNG’ appears on the screen, release the Power key.
  • Immediately after releasing the Power key, press and hold the Volume down key.
  • Continue to hold the Volume down key until the device finishes restarting.
  • Safe mode will display in the bottom left corner of the screen.
  • Release the Volume down key when you see ‘Safe Mode’.

If the issue does not occur in this mode then it could be caused by an app you downloaded. Find out what app this is and uninstall it.

Wipe the cache partition

There are instances when a corrupted system cached data can cause this problem. It’s therefore a good idea to delete this data as the phone will just rebuild this data when it starts again.

  • Turn off the phone.
  • Press and hold the Volume Up key and the Home key, then press and hold the Power key.
  • When the device logo screen displays, release only the Power key
  • When the Android logo displays, release all keys (‘Installing system update’ will show for about 30 – 60 seconds before showing the Android system recovery menu options).
  • Press the Volume down key several times key to highlight ‘wipe cache partition.’
  • Press the Power key to select.
  • Press the Volume down key to highlight ‘yes’ and press the Power key to select.
  • When the wipe cache partition is complete, ‘Reboot system now’ is highlighted.
  • Press the Power key to restart the device.

Check if the issue still occurs.

Perform a factory reset

One last troubleshooting step to consider is a factory reset. This will bring your phone back to its original factory condition. Take note that your phone data will be deleted in the process so make sure to create a backup copy before proceeding.

  • Press the Volume down key several times key to highlight ‘wipe data / factory reset.’
  • Press Power button to select.
  • Press the Volume down key until ‘Yes — delete all user data’ is highlighted.
  • Press Power button to select and start the master reset.
  • When the master reset is complete, ‘Reboot system now’ is highlighted.
  • Press the Power key to restart the device.
  • With no apps installed in the phone, try to check if the issue still occurs.

If the above steps doesn’t fix the problem then you will need to bring the phone to a service center and have it checked as this could already be caused by a faulty hardware component.
