How to Fix YouTube Not Working on Roku

When YouTube stops working on Roku, the root cause is usually app cache state, account sync, or outdated Roku software. Use this sequence to get playback working again quickly.

Method 1: Restart Roku and internet connection

Restarting both devices clears temporary streaming and authentication failures. It is the fastest fix for black screen and loading errors.

  1. Restart Roku from Settings > System > Power > System restart.
  2. Restart modem and router.
  3. Open YouTube and test playback.
  4. Try a different video category to confirm full recovery.

Method 2: Remove and reinstall YouTube channel

Reinstalling replaces corrupted local app data. This is effective for app launch failures and missing UI elements.

  1. Highlight YouTube channel on Roku home screen.
  2. Press * on remote and choose Remove channel.
  3. Restart Roku.
  4. Re-add YouTube from Streaming Channels and sign in again.

Method 3: Update Roku OS

Older Roku firmware can break compatibility with newer YouTube app builds. Updating the OS resolves many recurring playback bugs.

  1. Go to Settings > System > Software update.
  2. Select Check now and install updates.
  3. Restart Roku after updates complete.
  4. Open YouTube and verify videos play normally.
