How To Fix Windows Update Error Code 80246007 On Windows 10

Windows updates improves the system performance and enhances its security features as well. Although updating process is a simple process, there are instances issue can occur such as getting Error code 80246007 during Windows Update download. Error code 80246007 usually appears when downloading and installing Windows Updates, there are also reports from users getting the same error code when downloading or updating an application from Windows store. There are several factors that can cause Error code 80246007 to occur such as issues with antivirus program, corrupt or missing Windows update component, to corrupt system files. If you are getting Error Code 80256007 when downloading Windows update, try the solutions below to fix it.

Before performing the recommended troubleshooting steps below I suggest that you try restarting your computer first. This action refreshes the operating system and remove any corrupt temporary data that could be causing Error code to occur.

Solution 1: Run Windows Update troubleshooter

Troubleshooter is a built-in tool on Windows that scans your computer for problems and automatically repairs the problem if there are any. In this case, Run Windows Update troubleshooter and then check if Error code still occurs.<br>To do this:

  1. Click Start menu or Windows icon located at the lower left.

  2. Click Settings, an icon that looks like a gear.

  3. At Window Settings, click Update & Security

Solution 2: Temporarily Disable Antivirus software

Antivirus or third party antivirus programs can sometimes cause conflict and blocks Windows update process to finish downloading and installing on your computer. For Windows Security

  • Click on the Start menu  – Settings > Update & Security – Windows Security – Virus & threat protection > Manage settings
  • Switch Real-time protection to OFF.  

If you are using Avast

  • Search for the Avast icon in your computer’s system tray and double click on it.
  • Click on Avast shields control.
  • Locate the options to disable the program – the options are to disable it for 10 minutes, an hour, until the computer is restarted or permanently (until you yourself turn it back on). Select whatever option suits you best and use it to disable the program.

If you are using AVG

  • Search for the AVG icon in your computer’s system tray and double click on it.
  • Click on Temporarily disable AVG protection.
  • Choose how long you want AVG to be turned off and whether you want AVG to disable its Firewall too.
  • Click on OK to disable the antivirus program.

If you are using McAfee

  • Search for the McAfee Antivirus icon in your computer’s system tray and right click on it.
  • Click on Exit.
  • You should see a dialog box warning you that McAfee‘s protection will be turned off. Click on Yes in this dialog box to disable the antivirus program

Download and install updates again and then check if Error 80246007 still occurs.

Solution 3: RUN DISM and SFC scan

To RUN DISM

  2. Right click on the Command Prompt result and click on Run as Administrator from the drop down menu for command prompt admin access.
  3. At command prompt window, type the following command and then press Enter
  4. Type DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth and press Enter
  5. Type DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /Restorehealth and press Enter. Wait for each process to complete as it can take a while.

After DISM is complete, check if Update Error 80246007 still occurs.

If after running DISM but Error still occurs. You can try to RUN SFC scan :

To run SFC scan:

  1. Type Command Prompt at the search bar on your Windows located at the lower left.
  2. Right click on the Command Prompt result and click on Run as Administrator from the drop down menu for command prompt admin access.
  3. At command prompt window, type the command sfc /scannow  and hit Enter key. Scanning for corrupted or missing files will begin. Make sure not to abort and just wait for it to complete.

After running SFC scan, check if Update Error 80246007 still occurs.

Solution 4: RUN BITS Troubleshooter

Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS) is a component on Windows update service that helps with download and upload of Windows Update files to servers (HTTP or SMB). Although there are issues with the Windows update service that is preventing the update process to complete. Try fixing this error by perform BITS troubleshooter to help fix update related error codes.

  1. Press Windows key +  R to open Run Dialog box.
  2. At Run dialog box, type ‘control panel’ and press Enter or click OK.
  3. At Control Panel window, type Troubleshooting at search box located at the upper right then click on Troubleshooting result.
  4. Click on View All option at the left pane.
  5. Select Background Intelligent Transfer Service and double click on it. A new window opens.
  6. Click Next. Windows will now search and detect problems.
  7. After troubleshooting process is complete and it could not identify any problem, click on Close to exit. If a problem is detected, it will display recommended solutions to fix it.

Check if Update Error 80246007 still occurs.

Solution 5: Reset Windows Update Components Using Command Prompt

If none of the solutions mentioned above did not fix Update Error 80246007 on Windows, you may need to manually reset Windows Update component and then see if the error will be resolved.

  1. Type Command Prompt at the search bar on your Windows located at the lower left.
  2. Right click on the Command Prompt result and click on Run as Administrator from the drop down menu for command prompt admin access.
  3. In the command line tool, type the following commands and hit enter key.
  4. Type net stop bits and press Enter.
  5. Type net stop wuauserv  and Enter.
  6. Type net stop cryptSvc  and press Enter.
  7. Type net stop msiserver  and press Enter.
  8. Type ren C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old  and press Enter.
  9. Type ren C:\Windows\System32\catroot2 Catroot2.old  and press Enter.
  10. Type net start bits  and press Enter.
  11. Type net start wuauserv  and press Enter.
  12. Type net start cryptSvc  and press Enter.
  13. Type net start msiserver  and press Enter.
  14. Click on Close
  15. Restart your computer.

Check if Update Error 80246007 on Windows issue still occurs
