How to fix Samsung Galaxy A5 screen went black while charging and became unresponsive (easy steps)

We have been contacted by some of our readers regarding their Samsung Galaxy A5 units that reportedly went black while charging and became unresponsive. By that, they mean that their phones no longer responds whenever they press or hold the power key or any physical buttons.

For the benefit of our readers who contacted us, I will have to address this problem in this post. Since it’s not the first time I encountered this issue, I already know a thing or two that could fix it. I will share with you the solutions I’ve been using to fix this kind of problem. How to fix Galaxy A5 with a black screen that would no longer respond

While this may seem like a very serious hardware problem, in reality it’s not. In fact, it may just be a system crash provided there are no signs of physical and/or liquid damage. Try doing these steps to see if  you can fix this problem on your own…

First solution: Perform the Forced Reboot procedure

This must be the first thing that you should do if your phone became unresponsive without apparent reason. In fact, it might be the only thing you need to do to make your device run perfectly again. The Galaxy A5 has a non-removable battery so it’s hardwired to respond to this method. Press and hold both the volume down and power keys together for 10 seconds or more. This will refresh the phone’s memory and may bring it back to life. If it doesn’t respond to that, however, you should try this;

  1. Press and hold the volume down button and don’t release it yet.
  2. Press and hold the power key while holding down the volume down button.
  3. Keep both keys held down together for 10 seconds or more.

It’s basically the same as the first procedure only that we’re making sure the power key is pressed and held after the volume down button because doing it otherwise won’t give you similar result.

If, by any chance, the phone is still not responding after this, then try the next procedure.


Second solution: Connect phone to charger and do the forced reboot again

The thing about battery drain issue is that it may also lead the phone to crash since some hardware components and services may not be properly shut down when the device runs out of juice. If a system crash can make the phone unresponsive, having a drained battery makes the problem even worse. But just like most of the issues, there’s always something you can do about it:

  1. Plug the charger to a working wall outlet. It’s imperative you use a wired charger.
  2. Using the original power / data cable, connect your phone to its charger.
  3. Regardless whether the phone shows it’s charging or not, leave it connected to the charger for 10 minutes, at least.
  4. Press and hold the volume down button first and don’t let go.
  5. Then, press and hold the power key while holding down the volume down button.
  6. Keep both keys held down for 10 seconds or so but this time while the phone is connected to its charger.

Other things you should try if your phone is still not responding after the second solution is to wipe its cache partition or do the Master Reset. Both can be done in recovery mode. Here’s the thing, the moment the phone boots up in recovery mode, you can already consider the problem as fixed since the device already turned off. The issue is automatically downgraded from a power problem to a minor booting issue, which means it’s not as complicated anymore.

This is how you wipe the cache partition or do the Master Reset:

  1. Turn off the device.
  2. Press and hold the Volume Up key and the Home key, then press and hold the Power key.
  3. When the Android logo displays, release all keys (‘Installing system update’ will show for about 30 – 60 seconds, then ‘No command’ before showing the Android system recovery menu options).
  4. Press the Volume down key several times to highlight “wipe cache partition” or “wipe data / factory reset.”
  5. Press Power button to select.
  6. Press the Volume down key to highlight “yes” and press the Power key to select.
  7. When the wipe cache partition is complete, “Reboot system now” is highlighted.
  8. Press the Power key to restart the device.

After all these and the problem hasn’t been fixed, then it’s time you brought the device to Samsung Experience or any accredited shop.
