What to do if Google Pixel 3 XL won’t charge or turn on

Many Google Pixel 3 XL users are asking us for help as their device refuses to charge or turn on. We include one sample case to give you context for our solutions below.

Problem: Google Pixel 3 XL won’t charge or turn on

Pixel 3 XL. latest pie9 update caused battery to get hot and shorten time between needed charges. now it drained to 1% and i didnt get to the charger on time. it wont turn on. last time this happen before the recent update, also it would not turn on, but i let it charge and then hold power button for 60 sec and then it turned on. but now when i plug in a red light flashes 6 times, then the battery icon appears on the screen static…then after about 5 minutes it shows animated charging icon showing the there is at least 25% battery, but it still will not turn on. any help would be appreciated!!

Solution: The flashing red LED light was an indication that your Pixel 3 XL’s battery became totally empty. Turning on the device when the battery is fully empty is not possible so you want to make sure that you let it charge for at least 30 minutes. It’s not recommended that you let the battery drain its power fully as that might cause it to become totally inoperable. The battery’s internal circuits must have enough remaining power in order for the system to allow for another charging session. After 30 minutes, try to power on the phone again and see what happens.

Use another set of charging accessories

In case the problem lies with the current set of charging cable and adapter, you can also use a known working set for troubleshooting purposes.

Charge using a PC

Sometimes, charging with official charging cable and adapter may stop working due to a bug. If this happens, try to see if your Pixel 3 XL will charge via a computer. Here’s what you need to do:

  1. Turn on your computer.
  2. Connect your Pixel 3 XL to your computer using a known working charging cable.
  3. Let your phone charge for at least 30 minutes.
  4. Disconnect and reconnect the cable from your phone within 10 seconds.
  5. Try restarting your phone by pressing and holding the Power button for a few seconds. Then, tap the Restart icon.

Use wireless charger

If you have an available Google Pixel Stand or certified wireless charger for the Pixel 3, then try to see if it will charge the phone. It’s possible that there may be an issue with your phone’s charging port causing the system to not receive enough current while charging by cable.

Keep in mind that Pixel 3 XL can only charge wirelessly using Pixel Stand or Google-approved third party wireless chargers. Don’t use anything that might damage the system any further.

Get Google support

If you are unable to make the phone charge or power back on at all, you can assume that the issue is beyond your ability to fix. There must be a hardware malfunction that causes the phone to not charge or turn on. Contact Google for repair or replacement.
