How to Fix Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3 Black Screen of Death

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 3 can sometimes display a completely black screen that does not respond to taps or button presses. This issue is usually caused by a software crash or a drained battery, and the following methods will help you fix it.

Method 1: Force Restart Your Phone

A force restart is the quickest way to fix a frozen or unresponsive screen. This does not erase any data on your phone.

  1. Press and hold the Volume Down button and the Power (Side) button at the same time.
  2. Keep holding both buttons for 10 to 15 seconds.
  3. The screen will go dark and the Samsung logo will appear as the phone restarts.
  4. Release both buttons when you see the Samsung logo.
  5. Wait for the phone to fully boot up.

Method 2: Charge Your Phone

A completely drained battery can cause the screen to remain black. The phone may not show any charging indicator for several minutes if the battery is fully depleted.

  1. Connect your Galaxy Z Flip 3 to its original charger and cable.
  2. Let it charge for at least 30 minutes without attempting to turn it on.
  3. After 30 minutes, try pressing the Power button to wake the screen.
  4. If the screen still does not respond, try a force restart while the phone is plugged in.
  5. If the phone does not show a charging indicator after 30 minutes, try a different charger and cable.

Method 3: Check for Physical Damage

The Galaxy Z Flip 3 has a folding screen that is more fragile than traditional displays. Physical damage to the screen or hinge can cause a black screen.

  1. Inspect the inner folding screen for any visible cracks, lines, or damage.
  2. Check the hinge area for debris or damage that could affect the screen connection.
  3. Look at the outer cover screen to see if it is working. If the cover screen works but the inner screen does not, this points to a hardware issue.
  4. If you find any physical damage, take your phone to a Samsung authorized service center for repair.

Method 4: Boot into Safe Mode

Safe Mode starts your phone with only built-in apps running. If the screen works in Safe Mode, a third-party app is causing the problem.

  1. With the phone off, press and hold the Power button until the Samsung logo appears.
  2. As soon as the Samsung logo appears, release the Power button and immediately press and hold the Volume Down button.
  3. Keep holding Volume Down until the phone finishes restarting.
  4. You will see “Safe mode” in the bottom left corner of the screen.
  5. If the screen works in Safe Mode, uninstall recently downloaded apps one at a time to find the culprit.
  6. Restart your phone normally to exit Safe Mode.

Method 5: Wipe the Cache Partition

Wiping the cache partition clears temporary system files that can become corrupted and cause display issues. This does not delete your personal data.

  1. Turn off your phone completely.
  2. Press and hold the Volume Up button and the Power button at the same time.
  3. Release both buttons when the Android Recovery menu appears.
  4. Use the Volume Down button to highlight “Wipe cache partition.”
  5. Press the Power button to select it.
  6. Select “Yes” to confirm.
  7. Wait for the process to complete, then select “Reboot system now.”

Method 6: Factory Reset via Recovery Mode

A factory reset erases all data and restores the phone to its original settings. Use this as a last resort and only if you have backed up your important data.

  1. Turn off your phone completely.
  2. Press and hold the Volume Up button and the Power button at the same time.
  3. Release both buttons when the Android Recovery menu appears.
  4. Use the Volume Down button to highlight “Wipe data/factory reset.”
  5. Press the Power button to select it.
  6. Select “Factory data reset” and confirm with the Power button.
  7. Wait for the reset to complete, then select “Reboot system now.”

Method 7: Contact Samsung Support

If none of the above methods fix the black screen, your phone likely has a hardware problem that requires professional repair.

  1. Visit samsung.com/us/support and select your device.
  2. Use the “Get Help” option to chat with a support agent or schedule a repair.
  3. You can also visit a Samsung authorized service center or uBreakiFix location near you.
  4. If your phone is still under warranty, the repair may be covered at no cost.

One Comment

  1. Thank you for the soft reset tip. Literally saved me being ripped off $450 from UbreakIfix. T-mobile shop was useless too since I had no insurance. Saved my Christmas man. Thanks again.
