How to fix Samsung Galaxy S8 Plus that blacked out and won’t turn on after Android 8 Oreo update (easy steps)

When it comes to power issues, we can always assume there’s a problem with the hardware but when it comes to boot problems, then it should be the firmware we have to look into. We have some readers that own the Samsung Galaxy S8 Plus who contacted us because according to them, after they updated their devices to Android 8.0 Oreo, those units blacked out or powered down and would no longer turn on or respond. Could it be that they downloaded a bad update?

We really don’t know for sure why such a problem started after an update. The best thing we could do is troubleshoot the phone to determine the magnitude of the problem and if it can still be fixed. That’s what this post is for. I will walk you through in troubleshooting your Galaxy S8 Plus that blacked out and would no longer turn on after a firmware update. I will share with you the solution we’ve been using to address similar issues in the past. How to troubleshoot your Galaxy S8 Plus that turned off and won’t power back on

As long as the phone hasn’t suffered from physical and liquid damage, we can always consider this problem a minor one and there’s always a possibility that you can fix it on your own without bring it to the shop.

Based on the reports from those who’ve encountered the problem, the phones blacked out after a few days since they updated them but there are those who encountered the issue shortly after the update. It’s possible that it’s due to some corrupt system caches or a result of a system crash so the procedures below could help you determine that.

First solution: Forced reboot

More often, this problem is due to a firmware crash wherein the phone becomes unresponsive with a black screen. Fortunately, such problem is very easy to fix and all you need to do is this:

  • Press and hold the volume down and power keys together for 10 seconds or more.

The forced reboot will restart your device like the normal process but if you’re familiar with the battery pull procedure, then this is the equivalent of it. It refreshes the phone’s memory and reloads all app, services and core functions. Do the same procedure a couple more times if the phone won’t respond after the first try or you may try this:

  1. Press and hold the volume down button and don’t go of it yet.
  2. Now press and hold the power key while holding down the volume down button.
  3. Keep both keys held down together for 10 seconds or more.

The second method is basically the same as the first only that we’re making sure the power key is pressed and held down after volume down key because doing otherwise won’t give you a similar result. However, if the phone is still not responding after this, then the next solution might bring it back to life.


Second solution: Charge your phone and do the forced restart again

At this point, it’s possible that the battery got completely drained and while it’s a very minor issue (or not at all), there are times when the firmware crashes just before the juice runs out. It’s because some of the services and hardware components may not be shut down properly. This leaves the phone unresponsive and while the device is hard-wired to respond to the forced restart procedure, the fact that there’s no battery left is the main reason why the phone won’t turn on even after doing the first procedure properly. In this case, here’s what you should do to address it:

  1. Plug the charger to a working AC outlet. Use a wired charger for this.
  2. Using the original cable, connect your phone to its charger.
  3. Regardless whether your Galaxy S9 shows the charging signs or not, leave it connected to its charger for 10 minutes.
  4. Now, press and hold the Volume Down button and don’t release it.
  5. While holding it down, press and hold the Power key.
  6. Keep both keys held down for 10 seconds or more.

If your phone indeed drained its battery and its firmware crashed, then it should be booting up now after you’ve done this procedure. However, if it remained unresponsive and you haven’t noticed any improvements, then it’s time to bring it back to the store or shop so that a technician can check it up for you.
