Configure Message Settings on the Galaxy S6 Edge

You can control or manage different options for your text and multimedia messages through the Edge messages settings menu. Among the available options you can customize or manage are message limits, size settings and notifications.

A quick way to access Message settings on the S6 Edge is from the Messages application. Just touch Messages from the Home screen, touch More, and then select Settings from the given options.

If you opt to use the standard procedure, follow these steps:

1. Go to the Home screen.
2. Touch Apps.
3. Touch Settings to view options to set.
4. Scroll to and touch Applications to get to the Apps menu.
5. Scroll to and touch to select Messages from the given options. Doing so will lead you to a screen where you can configure Messages settings.

To help you understand and determine what options to set, here’s a list of available options under Messages settings you can turn on or off, along with their respective descriptions:

Enhanced messaging – enabling this feature will let you send a multimedia message with voice recordings, photos, audio or video files, appointments (vCalendar), contact cards (vCard), as well as large files of up to 1 gigabyte (GB) to the Galaxy S6 device.

Notifications – when enabled, new messages notifications will be displayed in the Status Bar. To turn Notifications on, touch the ON/OFF switch and then configure the following options:

• Notification sound – to set a sound to play for new message notifications.
• Vibrate – to set whether vibration plays along with the sound for new message notifications.
• Pop-up display – to set whether a new message pops up on the screen to notify you.

Backgrounds and bubbles – lets you select backgrounds and bullet styles to use.

Quick responses – lets you create and manage text phrases you can add to your messages.

Spam filter – when enabled, spam messages are blocked by filtering based on the criteria you set. To enable this option, touch the ON/OFF switch and then configure the following filters according to your preferences:

• Manage spam numbers – messages from the specified phone numbers are automatically tagged as spam. To use this filter, enter the phone numbers.
• Manage spam phrases – messages that contain the phrase are automatically tagged as spam. To use this filter, enter the phrases. Only works when Spam settings are enabled.
• Spam messages – option to view messages tagged as spam.

Text messages settings

• Auto combination – option to select whether long messages that you received in multiple parts are automatically re-assembled to show as a single message.

Multimedia messages

• Group conversation – used to control how messages to multiple recipients are handled. Enabling this option will send a single message to multiple recipients. Meanwhile, a separate message is sent to each recipient when this option is disabled.
• Auto retrieve – used to select whether message attachments are downloaded automatically when you view a multimedia message (MMS). If you disable this option, only the message header is shown in the message list, and you will be asked to download the attachments.
• Roaming auto retrieve – used to select whether message attachments are downloaded automatically when your phone is outside the home network.

Delete old messages – When enabled, the oldest messages will be deleted automatically when the maximum number of text (SMS) and multimedia network (MMS) has been exceeded. The maximum number of SMS is 1000 and MMS is 100.

Emergency alerts – used to configure and manage emergency alert settings on your device. With this option, you can disable or enable certain alerts, like extreme alert, severe alert, amber alert, and emergency alert test messages. But Presidential alerts cannot be disabled. Following are other emergency alert options you can configure:

• Emergency alerts – this option lets you choose types of messages to receive and whether you opt to receive emergency alert test messages. Any of the message types can be enabled or shown except for Presidential alert.
• Emergency notification preview – used to play a sample emergency alert tone. To cancel the playback, touch Stop.
• Vibrate – used to select vibration options for emergency message notifications.
• Alert reminder – used for reminder interval configuration and management.

Compose/Send a Text Message (SMS)

Your phone supports both Text Messaging (SMS) and Multimedia Messaging (MMS), allowing you to send and receive instant texts as well as messages that contain text and images, recorded voice, audio or video files, photo slideshows, contact cards or appointments.

As soon as you have inserted the SIM, your phone is ready to send and receive text messages. But in some cases, you may need to manually set up your device for text messaging.

Important Note:

You may need to contact your carrier for information request on text messaging setup for your device, as you need to configure and set the message center number for your phone during the process.

Manually Set Up S6 Edge for Text Messaging

In case you need to manually set up your S6 Edge for text messaging, follow these steps:

1. Touch Messages from the Home screen.
2. Touch More to view more options.
3. Touch to select Settings.
4. Touch More settings to continue.
5. Touch Text messages.
6. Touch Message center number to configure or set message center number to use.
7. Enter the message center number. (Note: Please contact your phone carrier for this information).
8. Touch Set.
9. Go to back to the Home screen and you’re all set to use text messaging on your new phone.

Composing/Sending Text or SMS

Compose and send text messages or SMS on your Galaxy S6 Edge with these quick steps:

1. Touch Apps from the Home screen.
2. Touch Messages to get to the Messaging screen.
3. Touch Compose to open the Compose screen for you to begin composing your message.
4. Fill in one or more recipients. You may choose to enter the phone numbers directly in the Enter recipients field or touch Recipients, and then select the contacts to whom you want to send the message to.

Hints:

• If you want to send your text message to multiple recipients, just separate the recipient’s phone numbers with a comma. Any matching phone numbers from your Contacts list will be displayed as you enter information, allowing you to just tap a matching number or address to enter it directly.
• Once you’re done selecting all the message recipients, touch Done to proceed.

5. Touch the Enter message field and then compose your message.

Hint:

• If you want to add a subject line, touch More, select Messages options, and touch Add subject.

6. Once your message is done, touch Send. Your message will then be sent to your recipient.

Compose/Send a Multimedia Message (MMS)

Text messages with added pictures, voice recordings, audio or video files, contact cards or appointments are referred to as multimedia message or MMS. Need help composing or sending your first MMS with your new S6 Edge device? We’ve got you covered.

Just follow these steps whenever you’re ready:

1. Touch Apps from the Home screen.
2. Touch Messages to open the Messaging screen.
3. Touch Compose from the Messaging screen to get to the Compose screen.
4. Specify the number of your MMS. You can enter one or more phone numbers as your recipients. For multiple recipients, just separate the phone numbers with a comma.

Hints:

• You can enter the phone numbers directly in the Enter recipient field or touch the Message Recipients icon and then select the any one from your Contacts as your recipient.
• You can also select contact groups as your recipients as you desire.

5. After you’ve entered all the message recipients, touch Done to continue.
6. To start composing your message, touch the Enter message field.

Hint: Again you can include a subject line by touching More, then select Message options and finally, touch Add subject.

7. Touch the Attachments icon (paper cli) to add file attachments.
8. Select any file you want to attach to your message. You may choose an image, video, audio, take a picture, record a video, or record an audio. You can also attach other files including memo, calendar, maps and contacts.
9. If you want to make changes to or remove an attachment, simply touch and hold the item to change or remove.
10. Once you’re done, touch Send to send your MMS message.

You can also create slideshows with a picture, video or audio, and then add them to your multimedia message. You can do this while composing your multimedia message. Here’s how:

1. Touch More -> Message options -> Add slide to add space for a new slide in the multimedia message you are composing.
2. Touch the space for allocated for the slide.
3. Start creating your slideshow with any of the following options:

• Add a picture – to add a picture, tap the Attachment icon, touch Image, and then choose a picture.
• Add a video – to add a video, tap the Attachment icon, touch Video and then choose a video.

Quick Tip: Please note that you cannot add both a picture and a video on the same slide. You need to create a separate slide for each file type.

• Add music or voice recording – touch the Attachment icon, touch Audio, and then choose a file.
• Add a new slide – touch More, select Message options, and then touch Add slide.
• Preview your slideshow – you can view your slideshow before sending by tapping More, select Message options, and then touch Preview.
• More -> More options – touch this option to view and/or select more options.

4. Once you’re done creating your multimedia message, touch Send.

More Hints:

A slide show can also be created by simply attaching multiple files/items separately to the MMS message. Here’s how it’s done:

1. Touch the Attachment
2. Select a file type, location, and file.
3. Repeat the same steps for more slides.
4. Once you’re done selecting files, your phone will compile a slide show automatically.

Sending an Enhanced Message on the Galaxy S6 Edge

Before you can send an Enhanced Message, you need to enable the Edge Enhanced Messaging feature. Here’s how:

1. Go to the Home screen.
2. Touch Apps.
3. Touch Messages.
4. Touch More from the Messages screen.
5. Touch to select Settings from the given options.
6. Touch Enhanced messaging.
7. Touch the ON/OFF switch to turn on (enable) Enhance messaging.

More Hints:

• Once enabled, you can set/configure options including Image resize and Registered information.
• To set the standard size of images sent with Enhanced messages, touch Image resize.
• To view and set the registered information for your mobile phone number, touch Registered information.

Also note that you may be asked to agree to the Enhanced features Terms and Conditions and Privacy Policy, especially if this is the first time you enable or turn on Enhanced messaging on your device. If so, then review the terms and then touch Agree to proceed. By then, you can start composing and sending an Enhanced message on your device.

Follow these steps to send an Enhanced message from your S6 Edge:

1. Touch Apps from the Home screen.
2. Touch Messages to display the Messaging screen.
3. Touch Compose on the Messaging screen to begin composing your enhanced message to send.
4. When the Compose screen opens, fill in one or more recipients.

Hints:

• You can also enter phone numbers directly in the Enter recipient field.
• If you want to send the message to several phone numbers, just separate the phone numbers with a comma.
• You will be prompted with any matching phone numbers from your Contacts list as you enter information, allowing you to simply touch a match to enter that number or address directly.
• You can also touch the Message recipient icon and then choose the contacts to whom you want to send the message or select contact groups as recipients.

5. Once you have selected all the message recipients, touch Done to continue.
6. To start composing your message, touch the Enter message field.
7. Touch the Attachment icon (paper-clip) and select any files (file types) you want to attach to your message.
8. If you want to make some changes to or remove your attachment, touch and hold the item.
9. When everything is done, touch Send to send the enhanced message.

Save and Resume a Draft Message on the Galaxy S6 Edge

When you tap the Back key while composing a text or multimedia message, your message will automatically be saved as draft. An indication that a message is a draft is the Draft tag shown on the main Messaging screen. If you want to resume composing the message, follow these steps:

1. Touch Apps from the Home screen.
2. Touch Messages to open the Messaging screen.
3. Touch the draft message to resume editing it.
4. Once you’re done editing the message, touch Send to send it.

Viewing New Messages Notification on the Galaxy S6 Edge

You can configure your S6 Edge to play a ringtone, vibrate, or display the message shortly in the Status Bar when you receive a new text or multimedia message. All you have to do is to manage your notification settings.

You will also be prompted with a new message icon in the notifications area of the Status Bar. This will serve as your notification of a new text or multimedia message received. The number of new messages received will also be shown in the Messages app icon.

To open and view the new message, drag the Status Bar down. Doing so will open the Notification Panel where you can tap the new message to open and read it.

Alternatively, you can open and view a new message from Messages. Simply touch Apps, touch Messages, and the touch to select the conversation.

Manage Message Conversations on the Galaxy S6 Edge

Generally, text and multimedia messages that are sent to and received from a contact are grouped into conversations or message threads in the Messaging screen. From these conversations, you can view exchanges messages with a contact on the screen. The concept is similar to that of a chat program.

If you want to read a text message, you can either tap the text message or conversation to open and read it or drag the Status Bar down to open the Notification Panel and then tap to open and read the new message.

If you want to go back to the Messaging screen from a conversation, simply tap the Back key.

More Hints:

• View details of a particular message in the conversation by touching and holding the message. Doing so will open the options menu wherein you can tap the option to View message details.
• For messages with a link to a web page: To open a link in a message, tap the message and then tap the link. The link will then open in the Web browser.
• For messages with a phone number: To dial a phone number in a message or add it to your contacts, tap the message and then tap the phone number.

Steps to view a Multimedia Message

1. Touch Apps from the Home screen.
2. Touch Messages to open the Messages screen.
3. Touch a multimedia message or conversation to open.
4. Touch the attachment to open.

Hints:

• You can select the calendar where you want to save the event if the attachment is a vCalendar file. Meanwhile, vCard contact attachments will be imported to your phone’s Contacts list.
• Other media files like photos or videos can be saved in any storage location you prefer. You can also choose an app to opening them.
• If the Auto retrieve option in MMS settings is turned off or disabled, only the message header will be downloaded. If you want to download the entire message, just tap the Download button in the message.
• You can also check the multimedia message size before downloading it, in case you are concerned about the size of your data downloads.

Steps to Reply to a Message

1. Touch Apps from the Home screen.
2. Touch Messages to get to the Messaging screen.
3. Touch a conversation to open on the Messaging screen.
4. Enter your reply message by tapping the text box at the bottom of the screen.
5. When your message is done, touch Send to send it.

Tip:

You can also reply to a text message with a multimedia message. To do so, open the text message, and then tap the Attachment icon. The text message will then be converted into a multimedia message automatically.

Steps to Delete Conversation

To save space, you can delete all unnecessary conversations from your phone’s Messaging application. Here’s how:

1. Touch Apps from the Home screen.
2. Touch Messages.
3. Touch and hold a conversation you want to delete on the Messaging screen.
4. Choose any additional conversations to delete, and then touch Delete.
5. Touch Delete again to confirm action.

Steps to Delete a Mesage

You can delete a message from a conversation with the following steps:

1. Touch and hold a message while viewing a conversation.
2. Touch Delete.
3. Confirm deletion of selected message by touching Delete again.

View Contact Information from a Message

If the message you received is from someone in your Contacts list, you can view the contact information from a message by tapping the contact’s picture or icon in the conversation. Doing so will open a menu with options for you to view contact details, place a phone call, send an email message to the contact, and the like.

Please note that menu options may sometimes vary depending on the contact information stored in your device.

Manage/Configure Gmail Messages on the Galaxy S6 Edge

The new Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge offers you with an interface where you can manage and control your Gmail messages, use labels, manage threads, and more.

In case you need further assistance, we’ve also compiled a step-by-step guide to demonstrate each of the following operations:

Using Gmail Labels

Typically, all emails (Gmail) are saved in one inbox. You can sort or group your Gmail conversation threads by adding labels as you desire. For example, if you add the label Travel, all threads with “travel” will be sorted in the Travel list. Organizing emails this way will help you find which emails are of greater significance.

Here’s how to use Gmail Labels for your Gmail Messages on S6 Edge:

1. Touch Apps from the Home screen.
2. Touch Google.
3. Touch Gmail to open your Gmail Inbox.
4. Mark the checkbox next to a conversation by touching and holding the conversation thread or simply touch the thread’s icon or picture.
5. When the conversation thread is marked, tap More options then select Move to.
6. Tap a label you want for the thread and it will be added to the selected label.

Archive Gmail Threads

If you don’t want Gmail threads to appear in the inbox, you can remove all sent and received Gmail threads anytime. Replies for archived threads will show in the inbox again when they arrive.

Here’s how to archive Gmail threads on your Galaxy S6 Edge device:

1. Touch Apps from the Home screen.
2. Touch Google.
3. Touch Gmail to open the Inbox.
4. Mark a conversation thread by touching and holding the conversation thread or touch the thread’s icon or picture.
5. When the conversation thread is marked, touch Archive.

The selected thread will then be moved to Archive.

Mute Gmail Threads on your Galaxy S6 Edge

You can mute any unimportant long threads to prevent them from showing in your inbox. Here’s how to do it:

1. Touch Apps from the Home screen.
2. Touch Google.
3. Touch Gmail to get to the Inbox.
4. Mark a conversation thread you want to mute by touching and holding the conversation thread or touch the thread’s icon or picture.
5. When the thread is marked, touch More options.
6. Touch Mute and the thread will now be hidden.
   

Delete Gmail Messages on the Galaxy S6 Edge

You can delete any Gmail conversation threads from your inbox, if you no longer wish to keep them. Here’s how to do it:

1. Touch Apps from the Home screen.
2. Touch Google.
3. Touch Gmail to open the Inbox.
4. Mark a conversation thread to delete by touching and holding the thread. You can also touch the thread’s icon to add a checkmark to the conversation you want to delete.
5. Touch Delete to remove the selected conversation thread.
   

Search Gmail Messages on the Galaxy S6 Edge

Finding a specific Gmail message or message thread from your Inbox is made easier with your Galaxy S6 Edge Gmail app.

Here’s how to do it:

1. Touch Apps from the Home screen.
2. Touch Google.
3. Touch Gmail to open the Inbox.
4. Touch Search to begin your search.
5. Type in your search text.
6. Touch Search.

When the search results display, touch the message or thread from the list to view it.

Report Spam or Phishing Gmail on the Galaxy S6 Edge

Follow these steps to report spam or phishing emails from your Gmail inbox with your S6 Edge device:

1. Touch Apps from the Home screen.
2. Touch Google.
3. Touch Gmail.
4. Touch and hold a conversation thread from the Inbox, which you think is a spam or phishing message. Doing so will mark the thread. Alternatively, touch the thread’s icon to add a checkmark to a suspected thread.
5. Touch More options to continue.
6. Touch to select Report spam or Report phishing from the given options. The selected message/thread will then be reported as spam or phishing.
   

Adding another Gmail Account on the Galaxy S6 Edge

If you have several Gmail accounts to use or view on your device, you can add them all. All you have to do is go to your phone’s Settings, and then Accounts menu. Here’s how:

1. Touch Apps from the Home screen.
2. Touch Settings.
3. Scroll to and touch to select Accounts from the Settings menu.
4. Touch Add account.
5. Touch to select Google from the list.
6. Type in your Gmail username and password, and then tap Next to proceed.
7. Follow the onscreen instructions to review and agree to the Terms of Service and Privacy Policy, and then touch Accept to proceed.
8. Once your phone connects with your Google servers, choose the items you want to sync with your device and then touch Next.

When you are signed in to your Google Account, you will have access to both of your Gmail accounts through the Edge Gmail application.

Switching between Gmail Accounts on the Galaxy S6 Edge

Using the Gmail app, you can switch between accounts in case you’ve set up multiple accounts on your device.

Here’s how switching between Gmail accounts is done on the S6 Edge device:

1. Touch Apps from the Home screen.
2. Touch Google.
3. Touch Gmail to open the Inbox.
4. Touch Menu.
5. Locate the account you want to view from the list located at the top of the menu and touch the icon to select it. The selected account inbox will then be displayed.
