How to set up and use Wi-Fi Calling on your Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge

For a more improved voice and data coverage, you can use Wi-Fi networks to send and receive calls and text messages through the S6 Edge Wi-Fi calling feature.

Wi-Fi calling has been known for offering better coverage in buildings and areas with poor cellular reception.

Follow these steps to set up/activate Wi-Fi calling on your new S6 Edge device.

  1. Touch Apps from the Home screen.
  2. Touch Settings.
  3. Scroll to Connections, then touch More connection settings.
  4. Touch Wi-Fi calling to configure settings/options.
  5. Slide the Wi-Fi switch right to turn ON or enable Wi-Fi calling feature on your device.
  6. Select the Wi-Fi preferred or Never use Cellular Network option to activate the feature.

Important Note:

Be sure to enable your Wi-Fi network and/or connect to a wireless network before using Wi-Fi calling on your device. In case you need further assistance, here’s how:

  1. Touch Apps from the Home screen.
  2. Scroll down to Connections, and then touch Wi-Fi.
  3. Touch the Wi-Fi switch ON, if necessary. You will know that Wi-Fi is enabled or turned on if the switch is positioned right and turns green.
  4. Select a wireless network to connect to from the list of available networks. If your wireless network is not in the list, touch More to add a Wi-Fi network.
  5. When prompted, enter the correct password to connect to a selected network.
  6. Finally, touch Connect.

More Hints:

  • You will know when Wi-Fi calling is already active and you are connected to a saved Wi-Fi network, if you see the Wi-Fi Calling icon in the Status bar. By then, you can already start using Wi-Fi calling to place and answer calls on your device.
  • If you are not in range of a saved Wi-Fi network and Wi-Fi calling is enabled on your device, you will see the Wi-Fi Calling disconnected icon in the Status bar.

If you no longer wish to use Wi-Fi Calling, then you can disable the feature through your phone settings. Here’s how:

  1. Touch Apps from the Home screen.
  2. Touch Settings.
  3. Scroll down to Connections menu and touch Wi-Fi Calling to get to Wi-Fi Calling settings.
  4. Touch the ON/OFF switch to turn Wi-Fi Calling off and disable the feature.

How to make and receive call with the Galaxy S6 Edge Phone Application

Important Note: Before you make calls, be sure to check the volume to avoid any relevant issue to occur during the call like difficulty hearing a caller or vice versa. To adjust in-call volume, press the Volume key up or down during the call.

Make/Place a Call using the Edge Phone Dialer

Using the phone’s dialer screen (via phone app) is deemed the most traditional way to place a call. Here’s how to do this on your S6 Edge device:

  1. Open the Phone screen by touching Phone from the Home screen.
  2. When the phone application opens, touch the keypad icon when necessary.
  3. Enter the phone number by tapping the number keys on the keypad.
  4. You will notice that as you enter the digits, the phone automatically searches for matching contacts. So all you have to do is tap the contact to fill in the number on the keypad, if you see the number you want to dial. This is made possible with a feature called Smart Dial.
  5. Touch the dial call icon (phone icon in green) to call the number.
  6. Wait for the phone to dial the number and initiate the call when the other party answers.
  7. Touch the end call icon (phone icon in red) to end the call when done. Doing so will end the call immediately.

How to place a call to a New Number

  1. Touch Phone from the Home screen to launch or open the Phone app.
  2. Enter the phone number you would like to call using the keypad.
  3. Touch the Call button to initiate the call.

How to place a call to a Contact Number

  1. Touch Phone from the Home screen.
  2. Touch Contacts to view phone numbers of your saved contacts.
  3. Touch to select the contact you would like to call.
  4. Touch the Call icon beside the number you want to call and wait for the call to connect and start.

How to place a call from Call Logs

You can use the Call Logs list to quickly place calls to recent incoming, outgoing or missed numbers on your phone. Here’s how:

  1. Touch Phone from the Home screen.
  2. Touch LOG to display the call logs list.
  3. Wait until the call logs list appears.
  4. Touch an entry to display the call details.
  5. Touch the place call icon (phone icon in green) to place a call.
  6. Wait for the phone to dial the number and the call starts when the other party answers.


  • To view additional options, touch the name or number.
  • To end the call touch the end call icon (in red).
  • Alternatively, you can place a call straight from the Call Logs list. To do so, swipe the entry you want to call from left to right.

How to place a call by voice

Another way to place a call on the new S6 Edge is called calling by voice, using the Google search widget. Here’s how:

  1. Tap the Microphone icon in the Google search widget from the Home screen.
  2. Speak “Call” followed by the phone number or name of a contact you want to call.
  3. If prompted, read the Terms of Service and tap Continue to proceed placing your call by voice. The phone will then automatically place your call when your request is understood.


  • In case you will encounter problems like your call does not connect, try to verify if the number you dialed is using the correct area code.
  • Also check your wireless coverage. Making calls in an area with poor wireless coverage may also cause issues like this.
  • To see if this is the case, try to make the call again from another location/area where wireless coverage is better.

How to place a call to Emergency Numbers on the Galaxy S6 Edge

Emergencies can occur anytime and anywhere. This is one of the reasons why a phone is a must-have item at all times. With the Galaxy S6 Edge, you can place calls to 911 even if your account is restricted or the phone screen is locked.

Here’s how to call the 9-1-1 emergency number when the phone screen is locked with a screen lock:

  1. Swipe the Phone shortcut icon (phone icon in gray) up from the Lock screen, and then tap on Emergency call.
  2. Tap 911 on the keypad then the place emergency call icon.

The emergency call is placed as long as you are within an area covered by your wireless service.

If you need to call the 911 emergency number normally even when your account is restricted, follow these steps:

  1. Unlock your phone screen, if necessary.
  2. Touch Phone from the Home screen.
  3. Tap the keypad icon to display the keypad when necessary.
  4. Tap 911 then the dial call icon. Your emergency call will then initiate and connect for as long as you are within your wireless service coverage area.

The Galaxy S6 Edge also comes with an embedded Global Positioning System (GPS) chip that is necessary for using the E 9-1-1 emergency location service where available.

The GPS feature of your phone searches for information to calculate your approximate location when you place an emergency 9-1-1 call. However, the duration for determining and reporting of your approximate location may vary depending on a number of factors such as availability and access to satellite signals. Normally, it would take up to 30 seconds or beyond.


  • Given the fact that some emergency designated call takers or Public Safety Answering Points (PSAPs) may not be equipped to receive GPS location information from your device, it is always recommended to report your location to the 9-1-1 operator when placing an emergency call.

How to Answer Phone Calls on the Galaxy S6 Edge

Normally, the Incoming call screen shows up and prompts you with the caller ID icon, name, and phone number of the calling party every time you receive a phone call from a contact. Meanwhile, when the incoming call is from someone who is not saved in Contacts, you will only see the default caller ID icon and phone number on the Incoming call screen.

How to answer an Incoming call

  1. Drag the answer call icon (phone icon in green) to the right to answer an incoming call and the call will start.
  2. When the call is finished, tap the end call icon (phone icon in red) and the call ends.


All calls will automatically go to voicemail if your phone is turned off.

How to reject an Incoming Call

You can reject a call in case you are too busy or just don’t feel like answering it. Here’s how:

  1. Drag the reject call icon (phone icon in red) to the left when a call arrives. Doing so will stop the ringtone or vibration. The rejected call will be sent to voicemail directly.


If you want to mute the ringer without rejecting the call, just press the Volume key down.

How to reject a call and automatically send a message to the caller

If you just can’t answer the call at the moment and you think the call is important or comes from someone you know of, then you can reject it and automatically send a text message to the caller instead. Here’s how:

  1. Drag the Reject Call With Message up from the bottom of the screen when the call arrives.
  2. Touch to select any of the messages you want to send to the caller and message you chose will be delivered to the caller.
  3. If you want to create a new message, touch the option to Compose new message


You can also use your phone’s Call settings to edit the reject messages. Here’s how:

  1. Touch Apps from the Home screen.
  2. Touch Settings.
  3. Touch Applications.
  4. Touch Phone.
  5. Select Call rejection.
  6. Touch Rejection messages, then start editing or creating your personalized reject messages.

How to use the S6 Edge In-Call Screen Layout

You will see a number of onscreen options while you are on call. You can activate these options by tapping them during a call.

In-Call Options

  1. Add call – tap this option to start a conference call. Once the second call is placed, tap Merge to join the two calls.
  2. Extra volume – tap this option to increase the current volume of the call.
  3. Bluetooth – tap this option to route the phone’s audio through Bluetooth headset (ON) connected on your phone or through the speaker (OFF).


  • You will know if the call is routed to a Bluetooth headset if the current call area displays the Bluetooth icon.
  • When Bluetooth or Bluetooth headset is disabled or turned off, the call is routed through either the earpiece or speaker.
  • Tap Bluetooth again to temporarily use the phone and route the current call back to the phone. To route it back to the connected Bluetooth headset, tap Bluetooth again.
  1. Speaker – tap this option to route the phone’s audio through the speaker (ON) or through the earpiece (OFF).


  • When Speaker is activated, the phone’s audio is routed through the speaker. If deactivated, the phone’s earpiece is used instead.
  • If you want to adjust the speaker volume, use the Volume key.
  1. Keypad/Hide – option used to toggle the appearance of the onscreen keypad.
  2. Mute – option used to mute the microphone during an active call. To unmute the microphone, tap Mute again. If Mute is enabled or activated, the speaker phone will be deactivated.
  3. End call – option used to end the current call.
  4. More – option to view or display additional in-call options including Contacts, Message, Memo and Calendar.
  • Contacts – is used to display your Contacts list.
  • Message – is used to send a text or multimedia message (MMS) while staying on the call.
  • Memo – is used to create a new memo while staying on the call.
  • Calendar – is used to view your calendar while staying on the call.

End of Call Options on the Galaxy S6 Edge

By the time a call ends, you will be prompted with the end-of-call options screen that contains the following options to:

  1. View contact – used to display the contact information of the caller.
  2. Create contact – used to create new contact information for the caller.
  3. Update existing – used to add the caller’s phone number to an existing contact entry in your phone.
  4. Add event – used to schedule a meeting and invite the caller.
  5. Call – used to place a call to the caller.
  6. Message – used to address a text message to the caller.

Optional Messaging/Calling Services on the Galaxy S6 Edge

The new S6 Edge device also features additional voice-related service you may use including call services, voicemail, and the like. Read on to learn how to use any of these features on your phone.

  1. Voicemail

It is recommended to set up your voicemail and personal greetings as soon as your phone is activated. All unanswered calls will be transferred to your voicemail even if your phone is in use or switched off. Also, to prevent any unauthorized access, please don’t forget to create a password when setting up your voicemail. Without a password, anyone who has access to your phone can also access your voicemail messages.

How to set up voicemail on your Galaxy S6 Edge

  1. Touch Phone from the Home screen to display the phone screen/dialer.
  2. When the phone screen app appears, tap the keypad icon to display the keypad (if necessary).
  3. To dial your voicemail number, touch and hold the number 1 key.
  4. Wait for your phone to dial the voicemail access number.
  5. Follow the onscreen instructions to create your password, record your name announcement and record your greeting.
  6. Visual Voicemail

Visual Voicemail offers you quick and easy access to your voicemail. With this feature, you can easily find the exact message you are searching for without a need to listen to every voicemail message first. Visual voicemail periodically goes out to your voicemail, collects the caller information from all the current voicemails, and then populates a list that contains the name and number of the caller, along with the length of time and priority level of the voicemail message.

How to set up Visual Voicemail on your Galaxy S6 Edge

Setting up visual voicemail is likely the same as setting up a traditional voicemail. Having this said, you can refer to the aforementioned Voicemail Setup procedures. But if you need a quicker support, here’s how:

  1. Touch Apps from the Home screen.
  2. Touch Voicemail.
  3. Alternatively, you can touch Phone and then tap the Voicemail Key to access your Visual Voicemail.
  4. Scroll through the Welcome to Visual Voicemail introduction screens to view a short explanation of the visual voicemail services.
  5. When prompted with the Personalize your voicemail screen (at the end of the welcome screens), tap on Personalize now and follow the onscreen instructions to create a password, record your name announcement, and record your greeting.

How to review your visual voicemail

Follow these steps to review visual voicemail in your new phone:

  1. Touch Apps from the Home screen.
  2. Touch Voicemail. The voicemail inbox will appear.
  3. Touch a message you want to review.
  4. Touch the Play icon to start reviewing a selected message.


You can also use other visual voicemail review options using any of the icons at the bottom of the review screen. Among the available options include maintenance, storage, and messaging. To learn more of these options, tap the More options icon, then select Help, open Visual Voicemail menu, and finally, touch Visual Voicemail Settings.

How to listen to multiple voicemail messages

You can easily access other voicemail messages once you’re done listening to a voicemail message, even without returning to the main voicemail screen. Here’s how:

  1. Listen to a voicemail.
  2. While listening to the current voicemail message, swipe your finger left or right. Doing so will display the next or prior message.
  3. Navigate through voicemail messages as frequently as you would want, or even move to the next or prior message before you are done listening to the current message.

How to configure visual voicemail settings on your Galaxy S6 Edge

You can access settings for notifications, pictures, greetings, and more using the Visual Voicemail settings menu on your device. Here’s how:

  1. Touch Apps from the Home screen.
  2. Touch Voicemail.
  3. Touch More options icon.
  4. Touch to select Settings from the given options and you will see the voicemail settings menu.
  5. Select an option to change its settings. Among the available options you may configure include the following:
  • Avatar – to configure your Avatar options.
  • Display – to change your voicemail message theme and enter a name to identify yourself to people when forwarding or replying to messages.
  • Help – to view help topics on using Visual Voicemail.
  • Preferences – to change your visual voicemail app preferences.
  • Sound – to change your sound/speakerphone options.
  • Updates – to check for available updates.
  • About Voicemail – to view information about the app.

How to edit/change display name through the Voicemail Menu

You can quickly change the name or number attached to your voice messages from your visual voicemail menu. Here’s how:

  1. Touch Apps from the Home screen.
  2. Touch Voicemail.
  3. Touch More options.
  4. Touch Settings.
  5. Touch Display.
  6. Touch Display name.
  7. Touch the existing identification field.
  8. Enter a new name or number used to identify you to recipients of your voice messages.
  9. Touch OK to save your information.

How to use Caller ID Blocking on your Galaxy S6 Edge

As the name implies, a caller ID refers to the number of the incoming call and serves as a caller identification you can view before you answer the phone. Follow these steps to hide your number from your recipient’s end, when you make a call:

  1. Touch Phone from Home.
  2. From the phone app screen, tap asterisk (star) key, 6, and 7 keys on the keypad.
  3. Enter a phone number.
  4. Touch the Dial Call icon. Your caller information won’t show on the recipient’s phone.

How to use Call Waiting on your Galaxy S6 Edge

Call Waiting is a feature used to alert you to incoming calls when you are on a call by sounding two beeps. Through your phone’s screen, you will know that another call is coming in as it shows the caller’s phone number, if available.

You can respond to an incoming call while you are on a call with the following steps:

  1. Slide the Answer Call icon to the right. Doing so will put the first caller on hold, allowing you to answer the second call.
  2. Touch Swap to switch back to the first caller.

How to use Conference Calling on your Galaxy S6 Edge

The Galaxy S6 Edge also features a 3-way calling or conference calling service that allows you to talk to two people at the same time.

Note: Please contact your carrier for more information about conference calling rates/charges.

Follow these steps to use conference calling on your phone:

  1. Touch Phone from Home to display the phone app screen.
  2. Wait for the call to connect. Once the connection is established, touch Add call and dial the second number. You can also place the call from Contacts or Call Logs.
  3. The first caller will be put on hold as your phone dials the second number.
  4. Once you are connected to the second party, touch Merge to start your conference call session.
  5. To end the conference call, touch the End Call icon.

Note: All callers will be disconnected if you started the call and are the first to hang up. However, if one of the parties you called hangs up during your 3-way call, you and the remaining caller remain connected.

How to use Call Forwarding on your Galaxy S6 Edge

With Call Forwarding, you can forward all your incoming calls to another phone number even when your phone is switched off. Once enabled, you can continue to make calls from your device. Follow these steps to activate call forwarding on your S6 Edge:

  1. Touch Phone from Home.
  2. Tap asterisk (star key), 7, 2 on the keypad to activate Call Forwarding. To deactivate, use keys *720.

Note: Call forwarding activation/deactivation keys may vary from carrier to carrier.

  1. Enter the area code and phone number to which you want your calls forwarded.
  2. Touch the Dial Call icon (phone icon in green) and you will hear a tone that confirms the activation of Call Forwarding. By then, all calls made to your wireless number will be forwarded to the designated phone number.
