How to troubleshoot LG V50 ThinQ that won’t turn on

There are a couple of solutions I will share with you here but the first one is the most effective. It’s because if this problem isn’t due to physical or liquid damage, then we’re almost always certain that it’s just a firmware crash and if such is the case with your device, the forced restart can always fix it regardless of what caused the problem. With that being said, here are the things you have to do to fix your V50 ThinQ...

First solution: Forced restart your phone

In case you don’t know yet, a forced reboot is a simulated battery removal procedure that will refresh your phone’s memory and reload all apps and services in one go. It is only performed on phones with non-removable batteries like your LG V50 ThinQ. Your device should respond to it as it’s hard-wired to provided that the procedure is done correctly and this is how you do it:

  • Press and hold the Power button and Volume Down at the same time until the device powers off, approximately 8 seconds, then release.

If the phone boots up after doing this, then that’s the end of the problem but if not, try doing the same procedure a few more times. After which and the phone still remains unresponsive, then try this:

  1. Press and hold the Volume Down button first and don’t let go.
  2. Press and hold the Power key while holding down the Volume Down button.
  3. Now, keep both keys held down together for 8 seconds or more.

It’s basically the same as the first but this time we’re making sure that the power button is pressed and held after the volume down key because doing it otherwise won’t give you the same result. However, if your V50 ThinQ is still not responding after said procedure, then here’s what you should do next.

Second solution: Charge phone and do the forced reset

A drained battery may seem like a very normal occurrence when you own a smartphone but the thing is, there are times when it would lead to a firmware crash. Sure, a problem like this can be fixed by a forced reboot but if your phone doesn’t have enough battery, then it still wouldn’t respond as it couldn’t power up. That could even be the reason why it didn’t respond when you did the first procedure. So, here’s what you should do about it:

  1. Plug the charger into a working wall outlet. It’s important that you use the wired charger for this procedure.
  2. Using the original power / data cable, connect the device to its charger.
  3. Now, regardless of whether the device shows up the charging signs or not, allow the phone to be connected to its charger for 10 minutes, at least.
  4. After which, press and hold the volume down button first and don’t let it go.
  5. Now, press and hold the power key while holding down the volume down button.
  6. Keep both keys held down together for 10 seconds or more while the phone is still connected to its charger.

If the problem is just a minor one caused by a drained battery and system crash, then your phone should already be booting up by now but if not, then it’s more serious that we initially thought. So, it’s now a perfect time to bring the device back to the store so that a technician can check it for you.

What to do if the problem occurs again?

However, if you were able to make your phone respond again but the problem occurs from time to time, then you just have to reset your device to give it a fresh start. Before the reset, make sure to create a copy of your important files and data as they will be deleted. Also, remove your Google account so that you won’t be locked out after the reset. Once everything is ready, follow these steps:

  1. Back up all data on the internal memory before performing a master reset.
  2. Turn off the device.
  3. Press and hold the Power and Volume down buttons.
  4. When the LG logo appears, quickly release and then re-hold the Power button while continuing to hold the Volume down button.
  5. When the ‘Delete all user data (including LG and carrier apps) and reset all settings’ message appears, use the Volume down button to highlight Yes.
  6. Press the Power button to reset the device.
