How to fix Google Play Store error 504 on Samsung Galaxy S10

The error message “Application can’t be installed. Try again, and if the problem continues, get help troubleshooting. (Error code: -504).” often appears during the downloading of an app. The error 504 is basically the same as the other Play Store errors but it’s quite a bit annoying because it occurs or shows up when the download is almost finished. When it prompts you, there’s no other option but to acknowledge it and your download will be halted. So, you’ll have to download the app again only to get the same error. Needless to say, you need to address this problem for you to be able to use your phone normally again.

How to troubleshoot your Galaxy S10 with Play Store error 504

The purpose of performing these troubleshooting procedures on your device is to figure it out the factors why the error 504 keeps on bugging your Galaxy S10. In so doing, you’re also trying to figure out a solution to make your device work perfectly again. With that being said, here’s what you should do about the error 504 on your Galaxy S10…

First Solution: Perform a Forced Restart

At this point, we don’t know for sure what the issue is. What we know so far is that the Play Store shows the error 504 when you download or install an app. It could be just a result of a very minor problem or a glitch. We need to rule out such possibility first as it may save you from a lot of trouble. Here’s what you should do:

  1. Press and hold the Volume Down button and don’t release it yet.
  2. While holding down the volume button, press and hold the Power key as well.
  3. Keep both keys held down together for 15 seconds or until the Galaxy S10 logo shows on the screen.

This procedure is called the forced restart and it’s a simulated battery removal. It’s very effective against minor firmware issues so once the phone has successfully rebooted, open the Play Store, download an app and see if the error 504 still pops up. If it still does, then move on to the next solution.

Second Solution: Clear Play Store Cache and Data

Another way of fixing the error  504 is by deleting Play Store’s cache and data. This method is very effective especially in dealing minor app issues. Don’t worry as none of your apps or files will be deleted if you did this. It’s an effective solution against app probles like this. So, follow these steps to reset the Play Store.

  1. Open Settings app.
  2. Tap Apps.
  3. Tap the More settings icon (three-dot icon, upper right).
  4. Tap Show system apps.
  5. Find and tap the Instagram app.
  6. Tap Storage.
  7. Tap Clear cache button.
  8. Tap Clear Data button.
  9. Tap Ok.

After clearing the cache and data of the Play store, it’s best to restart your phone and once the phone has rebooted, launch it again and download an app. If the error 504 still pops up, then try the next solution.

Third Solution: Remove your Google Account and Add it back in

Sometimes, the error 504 pops up if there’s something wrong with your account. Remember that the Play Store needs your Google account to be set up properly for it to work. To rule out this possibility, you have to follow these steps to remove your Google account:

  1. From a Home screen, swipe up or down from the center of the display to access the apps screen.
  2. Open Settings app.
  3. Tap Accounts and backup.
  4. Tap Accounts.
  5. Select the appropriate Gmail address. If there are multiple accounts, make sure to pick the one you want to remove from the device.
  6. Tap Remove account.
  7. To confirm, review the notification then tap Remove account.
  8. Restart your phone to refresh the memory.

Since you won’t be able to download an app without a Google account set up on your device, follow these steps to add an account to your phone:

  1. From a Home screen, swipe up or down from the center of the display to access the apps screen.
  2. Open Settings app.
  3. Tap Accounts and backup.
  4. Tap Accounts.
  5. Tap Add account.
  6. Tap Google. If you set up a screen lock option such as PIN, Password, or Pattern, you should enter it here when prompted.
  7. Enter the Gmail address then tap NEXT.
  8. Enter the password then tap NEXT.
  9. To continue, review the Terms of Service and Privacy Policy then tap I AGREE. To review the Terms of Service and Privacy Policy, tap the appropriate link and language then tap Close (at the bottom) when finished.
  10. If presented, tap the Back up to Google Drive switch to turn on, then tap Accept.

After this, launch the Play Store and try downloading an app. If the error 504 still shows up, then move on to the next solution.

Fourth solution: Wipe the cache partition

Just before we reset your phone to fix the error 504, it’s best to wipe the cache partition first because corrupt system cache can also cause this kind of problem. Let’s just be thorough about this because it may save you from doing more procedures just to be able to download apps. Don’t worry, none of your files or data will be deleted if you did this. Here’s how it’s done:

  1. Turn off the device.
  2. Press and hold the Volume Up key and the Bixby key, then press and hold the Power key.
  3. When the Galaxy S10 logo shows, release all three keys.
  4. Your Galaxy S10 will continue to boot up into the Recovery Mode. Once you see a black screen with blue and yellow texts, proceed to the next step.
  5. Press the Volume down key several times to highlight wipe cache partition.
  6. Press Power key to select.
  7. Press the Volume down key to highlight yes, them and press the Power key to select.
  8. When the wipe cache partition is complete, Reboot system now is highlighted.
  9. Press the Power key to restart the device.

Once you’re done deleting the cache and the phone has successfully restarted, open Play Store and then try to download any app to see if the error 504 still pops up. If it still does, then move on to the next solution.

Fourth Solution: Create a backup of your files and reset your phone

Since, all procedures failed to resolve the issue all you need to do is to bring your phone back to its factory settings. A reset will fix this problem but you need to make sure to create a copy of your important files and any data that are saved in your phone’s internal storage as they will be deleted. After the backup, remove both your google and samsung accounts so that you won’t be locked out of your device. Once everything is in order, follow these steps to reset your phone:

  1. Turn off the device.
  2. Press and hold the Volume Up key and the Bixby key, then press and hold the Power key.
  3. When the Galaxy S10 logo shows, release all three keys.
  4. Your Galaxy S10 will continue to boot up into the Recovery Mode. Once you see a black screen with blue and yellow texts, proceed to the next step.
  5. Press the Volume down key several times to highlight ‘wipe data / factory reset’.
  6. Press Power button to select.
  7. Press the Volume down key until ‘Yes’ is highlighted.
  8. Press Power button to select and start the master reset.
  9. When the master reset is complete, ‘Reboot system now’ is highlighted.
  10. Press the Power key to restart the device.
