Welcome to another Galaxy S9 troubleshooting article. We want to address another form of charging problem on the S9, particularly about a case wherein the device refuses to charge and keeps showing “use correct charger” error. If your own S9 has similar or the same error, check out the solutions below that you can try.
Problem: Galaxy S9 not charging, keeps saying “use correct charger” error
have been with samsung for years because never liked the iPhone, but have now lost all faith.. galaxy s7 edge had pink lines across screen, put up with it because samsung took no responsibility and was told to send phone away for minimum of 8 weeks (apple replace your phone!) Now have an S9. When charging it says use correct charger, which i am, but have to hold cable in to charge!! for a phone that is not too short of £1000 to buy this is very poor..don’t seem able to get a solution (again, apple would replace!!) always preferred samsung but after 10+ years may have to give up on it because they seem to have gave up on customer service!!??
Solution: While not the most exciting aspect of any smartphone, charging functionality is vital. It can sometimes be upsetting to realize that your Galaxy device has stopped charging but it does happen. Charging problems like the one mentioned above can be due to factors that are not necessarily due to phone design or defect.
Use Samsung charging accessories
One of the reasons why expensive Galaxy devices like the S9 encounters power-related errors is caused by defective charging cables or adapters. In other cases, unofficial accessories are to blame. In order to avoid damaging the circuit or power management system of your device, be sure to stick with the charging cable and adapter that came with your phone. Your Galaxy S9 has only been tested by Samsung using the Adaptive Fast Charger and USB-C cable. These accessories have the correct parameters to give the right amount of energy to the system and battery during charging. They’re designed to maximize battery life of your device and are fully evaluated to work properly within your phone’s power tolerance. Using non-Samsung cables and adapter can supply insufficient or too much power during charging, not to mention the possibility of them physically harming the charging port.
Stay away from non-Samsung chargers and cables, especially from fake gadgets. Doing so can keep the battery of your device for longer. Some third party chargers may cause damage to the charging port as well.
A lot of people don’t realize this but your phone’s charging port is usually a vulnerable component. If you’re not careful when inserting or plugging the charging cable, the port or its charging system can get damaged. This usually occurs if there’s a foreign object in the connector or plug. The case in this post is most likely an example of a damaged charging port. Past cases of similar situations usually point to a bad port.
Factory reset your device
If you want to check whether or not the problem is fixable on your level, we suggest that you wipe the phone thru factory reset. Doing so will tell you if there’s a software bug causing the problem or not. If the same charging error remains after wiping the device with factory reset, you can bet hardware malfunction is the culprit.
Here’s how to factory reset your S9:
- Create a backup of your data.
- Turn off the device.
- Press and hold the Volume Up key and the Bixby key, then press and hold the Power key.
- When the green Android logo displays, release all keys (‘Installing system update’ will show for about 30 – 60 seconds before showing the Android system recovery menu options).
- Press the Volume down key several times to highlight ‘wipe data / factory reset’.
- Press Power button to select.
- Press the Volume down key until ‘Yes — delete all user data’ is highlighted.
- Press Power button to select and start the master reset.
- When the master reset is complete, ‘Reboot system now’ is highlighted.
- Press the Power key to restart the device.
- Charge the phone and check for the problem.
Get professional support
If your S9 continues to act erratically when charging, or if it won’t charge at all after a factory reset, you should contact Samsung for help. This issue is replicable so be sure to show the charging error when going to your local Samsung Service Center.
