How to fix a Galaxy S9 Plus that won’t boot up (turns on but stuck in Samsung logo screen)

Today’s troubleshooting article will address issues regarding the #GalaxyS9Plus. We cover four common issues in this one so hopefully you’ll find our suggestions helpful.

Problem #1: What to do if your Galaxy S9 Plus is dead, or won’t turn on

Plugged my Samsung S9 Plus last night as normal to charge. the phone recognised the charger and started charging! This morning there was a red light in top right signifying it was still charging. I tried to wake the screen to check the time but it was dead!  Tried pressing the power button to start phone, no joy. Since I have tried soft reset no joy and all the other booting options on the site here with no response! Regards.

Solution: This is not the first time that we’ve heard of such issue happening and unfortunately, a lot of cases end up with repair. To check if you can fix the problem on your level, you have to do a few basic things.

Use another set of charging cable and adapter

Sometimes, USB cables can break out of the blue. To see if you have a bad cable preventing the phone from charging, try using another set of charging accessories. If possible, try to borrow another charging cable and adapter from someone and use them to  charge your phone. If you can’t find an official able and adapter, you can visit your local Samsung store and charge your phone using their own. The aim here is to know whether or not you’ll get a response from your phone when you charge it. If it does respond with a red charging LED light but the screen stays black, then the problem may not be entire phone but only the screen assembly. This means you still need to send it in for repair though but at least you’ll know that it’s not a motherboard problem.

If the phone is totally dead and won’t respond at all, even when using a second, known working charging cable and adapter, there must be a hardware issue. It can be a bad battery or a motherboard failure. Any of these things mean repair so be sure to contact Samsung for help.

Check the charging port

Another common reason why a phone may fail to charge is defective charging port. We’re not here to tell you how to fix a physically damaged charging port. If you know that the port is damaged even before you contact us, stop wasting your time looking for software solutions. Instead, let Samsung or an independent service center repair the phone.

If you haven’t considered checking the charging port before though, it’s simple enough. What you want to do is to perform an ocular check only. For this task, you want to use a magnifying tool. This will help you examine the port to see if there are any visible damage or debris that prevents the charging cable from making contact with the metal pins.

Sometimes, the thin metal pins may become bent or damaged after some time. If you see that in the charging port, that may be the reason why your phone has stopped working and hence, causing it not to power back on.

Master reset

If your phone still responds (making sounds, vibrating, or showing LED light), it can mean that the screen may have encountered a software error preventing it from working properly. In this case, the problem must be OS (operating system) related and may be resolved by doing a factory reset. To do that, follow these steps:

  1. Back up data on the internal memory. If you have signed into a Google account on the device, you have activated Anti-theft and will need your Google credentials to finish the Master reset.
  2. Turn off the device.
  3. Press and hold the Volume Up key and the Bixby key, then press and hold the Power key.
  4. When the Android logo displays, release all keys (‘Installing system update’ will show for about 30 – 60 seconds before showing the Android system recovery menu options).
  5. Press the Volume down key several times to highlight “wipe data / factory reset.
  6. Press Power button to select.
  7. Press the Volume down key until ‘Yes — delete all user data’ is highlighted.
  8. Press Power button to select and start the master reset.
  9. When the master reset is complete, “Reboot system now” is highlighted.
  10. Press the Power key to restart the device.

Get professional help

If any of the basic checks above won’t help in turning the phone back on, it means that the problem is beyond your ability to fix. You need to send the phone in so Samsung can check the hardware and do required diagnostics. If you can’t get help from Samsung for some reason, you can let an independent technician do the job. Keep in mind though that service from third parties voids manufacturer warranty so if you’ll decide to let Samsung fix the device later on, they’ll not even bother. Repair from either Samsung or third party is definitely not free, especially if there’s a part that needs replacing so it’s your call. We highly suggest that you opt for Samsung repair first.

Problem #2: How to fix a Galaxy S9 Plus that won’t boot up (turns on but stuck in Samsung logo screen)

My Galaxy S9 Plus is Completely Dead. It’s giving no response on press of any buttons or combinations. It is charging but no LED is glowing.  I know it’s charging because.. when I plug it in power source, I see Samsung Logo with GALAXY S9+ written there. Then when I try any combo buttons, the phone just switches off. No Response. After some time.. when I plug it in.. It Starts charging and show the same logo again. This is not just SAMSUNG LOGO.. it says SAMSUNG GALAXY S9+ PLease contact me soon. Thank you.

Solution: Your S9 Plus is not dead; it’s simply not booting up. This means that Android may have encountered an error and it can’t resolve it by itself. In this situation, you’re looking at two possible solutions on your end: master reset and flashing.

Master reset, as mentioned in Problem #1, means booting the device to Recovery mode and reverting the software information to their defaults. This should be the first option for you. In your case, there will be chance of backing up your data so files (photos, videos, documents, contacts) in the phone right now are good as gone. If your S9 is set to automatically backup data to the cloud, then you don’t have to worry about losing them. If not, then you really have to other choice to recover them at this stage.

If master reset will not fix the problem at all, then you can try manually flashing stock firmware to your device. If you haven’t heard of the term flashing before, that’s probably because you’re just an average Android user. Flashing is not recommended for average users as it can potentially create more problems. It’s not rocket science though so if you want to learn what that is and how to do it, then go ahead and use Google. Be warned though, flashing your device may brick the device or make it permanently unusable. Do it at your own risk.

If you don’t want to flash the device, then the third option that you can try is to let Samsung deal with the problem. If the phone is under warranty, we highly recommend that you skip flashing and go directly to Samsung for help.

Problem #3: How to fix Galaxy S9 screen issue: turns green after accidental drop

Hi, I am really sad to inform you guys that my phone fell in the toilet bowl and as i went to gab it it fell in again slipping out my hands. as soon as i got a hold of it i removed the difficut case it had on it, grabbed a towel dried it and removed the back cover to dry it more. its been a dsay already and ive had it in rice to absorb moisture. i checked to see if it would turn and my screen is green i imediately turned it back off and put it back in rice. i dont know what else to do please help me.

Solution: The Galaxy S9 and S9 Plus devices are water resistant so there’s a good chance that they can withstand pressure in the toilet bowl and not cause any problems at all. The thing is, water may not be the one that causes the current screen problem. The phone may have hit the side of the bowl causing physical damage instead, resulting to a damage to the screen assembly. If the screen was working fine before you accidentally dropped it, then you need to let Samsung take a look at the hardware. This is the only way for you to know if the phone can still be repaired or not.

Problem #4: Galaxy S9 stopped fast charging, charges very slow

My Samsung Galaxy S9 hasn’t been fast charging since early August. It also takes almost an entire day to charge now. Things started out of the blue. I saw your article about this issue was posted before. Have more reports come in? Is this a wide spread galaxy s9 issue? I’ve tried all troubleshooting methods with no success. Bringing back to store on Monday…but I’m very curious if reports are still coming in or I’d you’ve learned anything new about it. Best.

Solution: There’s been sporadic reports of a similar issue happening on almost all Android devices we support in this blog but we still can’t get a pattern if it’s being caused by a software bug or not. Right now, we would suggest that you follow our instructions on what to do regarding the issue to address possible device problems. If nothing will work, then you should go ahead with the plan to have the device examined by Samsung.
