Problem 1: Galaxy Note 8 how to view contact details, how to import/export contacts, how to view user manual
I migrated from Galaxy Note 4 to a Galaxy Note 8 and still learning the subtle changes in the Contacts.
1) In my Note 4 contacts, I created groups. I know how to add and delete contacts from a group, but I am trying to figure out how to view all the members of a group in my Note 8.
2 &3) When creating contacts, what are the reasons to and not to add them to Phone, SIM, or Google. On my Note 4, i also had the option to them to Device and others i can no longer recall. Took me ages to figure out my contacts were not all in one place as i originally never noticed what the default was when creating new contacts. Still trying to clean up my contacts. Any suggestions on best way to do this? Have over 3000 contacts. 4) Looking for books/manuals about the Note 8. Haven’t seen any yet. Suggestions. Thanks for this site. Thank you. — Parasmshah
Solution: Hi Parasmshah. Let’s answer your questions one by one.
How to view individual contact details in a Group
In Android Nougat, there are two ways to view your contacts:
- via Phone app by tapping Contacts tab beside Recents tab, and
- By using Contacts app
If you tend to use the contacts list provided under Phone app, you won’t be able to see the group you’ve previously created as well as the details for each member. To do that, you must use the proper app — Contacts.
To view members in a group and their details, kindly do the following:
- Open Contacts app.
- Tap More settings icon at the upper right hand side (three-dot icon).
- Tap Groups.
- Select your desired Group.
- Select the individual contact to reveal details like phone numbers, email, etc.
How to select the location to save your contact
We understand that sometimes, one may forget to specify the account or location (SIM, Device) on where to save a contact. If you’ve fallen for this trap before, here’s how to do it properly.
When using Phone app
- Open Phone app.
- Tap Create contact on top.
- Tap the dropdown arrow at the upper left. This will give you options such Device, SIM, and other accounts.
When using Contacts app
- Open Contacts app.
- Tap Create contact icon at the lower right side (person with plus sign).
- Tap the dropdown arrow at the upper left. This will give you options such Device, SIM, and other accounts.
How to move contacts from one location to another in your Note 8
The trick of having all your contacts in one place is using one single account. For example, I use my Google personal account a lot so it makes sense that i always save my contacts in it rather than in other accounts or in device/SIM. Google Contacts can be accessed in any smartphone or computer and has a pretty robust system of allowing you to sync in almost all platforms. Since contacts stored in your Google account are stored in the cloud, they can easily be viewed by any Android smartphone that’s associated with that account. This makes it easier for me to view my contacts in multiple devices and not just in my primary smartphone.
Fortunately, if you have a lot of contacts that are spread all over, it’s quite easy to move them to your Google account (or to any account in your phone). Here’s how it’s done:
-
- Open Contacts app.
- Tap More settings icon at the upper right hand side (three-dot icon).
- Tap Settings.
- Tap Import/Export contacts.
- Tap IMPORT button.
- Tap the source of the contacts (SIM/Device, etc.)
- Select which account to move your contacts to.
- Tap ALL at the top if you want to transfer all displayed contacts to your account.
- Tap DONE.
- It may take a while for your phone to transfer your contacts if you have thousands of them.
Should you want to reverse the process by moving your contacts from one of your cloud accounts to local storage, follow these steps:
- Open Contacts app.
- Tap More settings icon at the upper right hand side (three-dot icon).
- Tap Settings.
- Tap Import/Export contacts.
- Tap EXPORT button.
- Tap the destination where you want to store your contacts (SIM/Device, etc.).
- Tap OK if Export to SIM card warning pops up.
- Tap ALL at the top if you want to transfer all displayed contacts to your account.
- Tap DONE.
- It may take a while for your phone to transfer your contacts if you have thousands of them.
How to view user manual of Galaxy Note 8
There are two ways to access the user manual for the Galaxy Note 8:
- via Settings app
- by searching the web using Google (just type the exact phone model and the phrase “user manual”)
We recommend that you view the user manual via the first option to avoid confusion over the specific models. To do that, follow these steps:
- Open Settings app.
- Tap the magnifying glass icon at the top.
- Type in “user manual.”
- Tap the option that shows and wait for the browser to load the entire manual. Make sure that your phone is connected to the internet before you do this.
Problem 2: Galaxy Note 8 looks similar to S8 after moving data
Just wondering. I moved data, info, apps to a new Note8 from S8+ doing a Smart Switch and Google also restores, transfers, data etc. Would I lose any pre-installed apps on my Note8. My menus look like S8+ now, which is not actually what I wanted, and it seems I have less not more apps? Should I factory reset? Just used up a ton of wi-fi quota, time & energy. But also don’t want the look & feel of an S8+ on my Note8. Should have never done this & just left my Note8 be. Can you help to relieve some of my anxiety? Hehe! — Brian Skinner
Solution: Hi Brian. If both devices run the same version of Android operating system and they came from the same carrier the user interface (UI) should look more or less the same. For example, a Galaxy Note 8 from T-Mobile should look very similar in terms of UI and pre-installed apps to a T-Mobile Galaxy S8. There may be some Note 8 specific apps on top of pre-installed Samsung-, Google- and carrier-specific but that’s it. Keep in mind that both devices are from the same manufacturer running the same operating system version. They should look similar!
If your S8 came from a different carrier, some pre-installed apps from that carrier won’t migrate to your Note 8 at all.
Also, pre-installed apps stick. They can’t be uninstalled even after you factory reset the device. If you think you’ve lost some pre-installed apps, you may have inadvertently disabled them, or deleted their icons from the Home screen.
If you think something’s not right with your Note 8 though, please be more specific with what you’re saying next time. Give us as many details as possible, especially about the differences that you’ve noticed so we can also give you specific answers. Remember, we can’t see your device and this is a one-way correspondence system. The more information you provide, the higher the chance of us getting the exact picture of the problem/concern.
Problem 3: Galaxy Note 8 can’t access work email
I used the phone to access both work and personal email, but my work email just stopped working one day. My admin has no ideas, the phone retailer can’t help, Samsung’s website doesn’t address it (as far as I can tell), and I’ve reset passwords and tried just about every option on the phone. I’ve signed into and confirmed my work email dozens of times from my PC. So I removed the account and tried to install again on the phone, and I see this: “Checking incoming server settings” then “Unable to set up account. An incorrect username or password has been entered, or POP3/IMAP access is not turned on for this account. Check your account settings or contact your service provider.” I’ve verified the password and username. I’ve tried every possible POP3/IMAP configuration. I even did a phone reset and tried again. No fix works.
Meanwhile, my personal gmail continues working fine. Can you please help? Thank you. — Mark
Solution: Hi Mark. We’ve seen this issue occurred before for those email accounts that have additional security layer set up like 2-step verification or similar. If applicable, go under your email account settings and disable any additional security feature before adding it to your phone. If you’re not familiar with how to remove such security feature, contact your IT guys and ask for help. Since you’re having a trouble with a company account, such security feature may or may not be accessible at your level.
If that’s not the cause of the problem, the error “POP3/IMAP access is not turned on for this account” may be accurate — that your account does not support POP or IMAP. Be sure to work with your IT department to see if your account is permitted to be accessed outside their network. For security reasons, some companies may only allow emails to be accessed using company devices like computers at work, or company-provided smartphones.
