Problem #1: Galaxy Note 5 keyboard not working

Hi. I’ve owned my Samsung Galaxy Note 5 from new. My phone is in sleep mode and I wake it up. I try to send an SMS, the keyboard pops up as normal. I begin to type, it’s highlighting the keys I’m pressing but nothing’s being written down! So I tried going through some other apps using in-game chat features and same thing, your typing is registered but nothing is being recorded down. So I tried a messaging app and same again. Doesn’t matter if you’re using S-Pen for handwriting or the predictive text it won’t register. Nothing. If I restart the phone, nothing’s changed. Only when I either remove the battery or switch off for a minute when it restarts am I able to type again! But then soon as phone goes into sleep mode and reawakens I’m back to square one! No writing again. Any help would be most appreciated thanks. — Dan

Solution: Hi Dan. There may be a keyboard app bug causing this problem so the first thing that you want to do is to clear the cache and data of whatever keyboard set as default. If you have multiple keyboard apps installed, make sure to also clear their respective cache and data. Better still, simply uninstall them to minimize chances of creating a conflict.

To clear an app’s cache and data, follow these steps:

  1. Open the Settings menu either through your notification shade (drop-down) or through the Settings app in your app drawer.
  2. Navigate down to “Apps”. This may be renamed to something like Applications or Application Manager in OEM skinned versions of Android 6.0.
  3. Once in there, click on an application.
  4. You’ll now see a list of stuff that gives you information about the app, including Storage, Permissions, Memory Use, and more. These are all clickable items. You’ll want to click on Storage.
  5. You should now clearly see the Clear Data and Clear Cache buttons for the application.

Should the issue continue after wiping the app’s cache and data, we recommend that you factory reset the phone. Doing so will revert all software settings to their defaults. If the glitch lies on the software side, factory reset should fix it.

To factory reset your Note 5, follow these steps:

  1. Turn off your Samsung Galaxy Note 5 completely.
  2. Press and hold the Volume Up and the Home buttons first, and then press and hold the Power key.
  3. Keep the three buttons pressed and when ‘Samsung Galaxy Note5’ shows, release the Power key but continue holding the other two.
  4. Once the Android logo shows, release both the Volume Up and Home buttons.
  5. The notice ‘Installing system update’ will show on the screen for 30 to 60 seconds before the Android system recovery screen is shown with its options.
  6. Use the Volume Down key to highlight the option ‘Yes — delete all user data’ and press the Power key to select it.
  7. When the process is complete, use the Volume Down key to highlight the option ‘Reboot system now’ and hit the Power key to restart the phone.
  8. The reboot may take a little longer to complete but don’t worry and wait for the device to become active.

Problem #2: Galaxy Note 5 cannot connect to cellular service after installing an update

Hello guys. I’m Junior K. So yesterday I was using my Samsung Galaxy Note 5 quite well until this morning. I decided to update the software to the most recent one. From settings, scrolling down to ‘About the device”, I got that message telling me that “The operating system in your device has been modified in an unauthorized way. Try downloading software updates using Smart Switch on your computer or visit a customer service center.”

So I did it using the Smart Switch with my PC. The whole process went well and the update was completed without any problem. My issue is, since then, I’m not able to make any phone call or text message because whenever I try to dial I get the “Not registered on network error.” I thought I could just deal with this by going through settings, then mobile networks and select a network either by Selecting automatically ( here I get the “Unable to connect. Try later” error) or Searching networks to select my provider ( here I get the “Error while searching for networks”).

I have also tried to remove the SIM card, to factory reboot, to select 2G only or 3G only then restart, nothing is changing. I called my provider, my line is ok and I can see from the task bar that the SIM card is recognized but still I cannot access mobile network. I’ve actually spend almost all day trying all the suggested solutions I’ve finding on the web, nothing has given result, what would you suggest me? Thank you! — Juniorlusu

Solution: Hi Juniorlusu. If factory reset did not fix your issue, there’s very little that you can do on your end. Since the problem started after you updated the software, something must have gone wrong during the installation. It’s also possible that the update may have corrupted the baseband version though this is the first time we’ve heard of an issue like this. Baseband version is the firmware of your phone’s modem.

Mobile modem manufacturers usually release an update for their products when phone manufacturers like Samsung releases an update. Thus, baseband version is usually updated when you install a system update. We can’t say for sure if the most recent update you installed corrupted the baseband but it can happen, at least in theory. Unfortunately, you will be unable to modify the baseband version unless you root your phone and install a custom ROM (which we don’t recommend). Even then, you need expert advise on how to get the correct baseband version for your phone model and how to install it to your phone.

If your wireless carrier can’t figure out the issue, we suggest that you have the phone replaced.

Problem #3: Galaxy Note 5 voice-to-text feature not working properly after an update

When I voice to text in the texting app the app repeats what i said. It looks like it is running through all of the possible variations of what I potentially said. So for example I say “My name is Joe: and it prepares this to send: My name is Joe my name is Jose my name is Joel my name is joy. However, if I say “My name is Joe period” I do get: My name is Joe. … and that is it. So the punctuation works, but I shouldn’t have to tell it “period.” It just started happening today and I ran the Marshmallow update on 2/25/17. — Joe

Solution: Hi Joe. The first step that you need to do in this case is to wipe the cache partition. This is a must-do especially if you’re having trouble following a system update. Here’s how it’s done:

  6. Use the Volume Down key to highlight the option ‘wipe cache partition’ and press the Power key to select it.
  7. When the process is complete, use the Volume Down key to highlight the option ‘Reboot system now’ and hit the Power key to restart the phone.
  8. The reboot may take a little longer to complete but don’t worry and wait for the device to become active.

Install app updates

Once you’ve wiped the cache partition, make sure that you immediately install all pending app and system updates. Doing so eliminates potential bugs that can develop if you use outdated apps with a new operating system. Many Android users often forget to install app updates after a system update, resulting to complains about slow performance, instability issues, among others. It’s your responsibility to ensure that all your apps are updated and compatible with the new operating system.

Delete app cache and data

There may be an app-specific bug causing this problem so make sure that you wipe the cache and data of the apps you’re having problems with.

Factory reset

If nothing changed after doing all the troubleshooting above, just wipe the phone clean it with factory reset.

  1. From the Home screen, tap the Apps icon.
  2. Find and tap the Settings icon.
  3. Under the ‘Personal’ section, find and tap Backup and reset.
  4. Tap Factory data reset.
  5. Touch Reset device to proceed with the reset.
  6. Depending on the security lock you used, enter the PIN or password.
  7. Tap Continue.
  8. Touch Delete all to confirm your action.

NOTE: Factory reset will wipe all user data from the phone so ensure that you create a backup before proceeding.

Problem #4: Galaxy Note 5 won’t charge and won’t turn back on

My phone was working fine, just stopped charging. I thought it was the charger. I bought a new charger and the battery symbol came on. Left it charging for several hours only to find that when i turned it on, it only had enough juice to show the Samsung text then it shut right off again. I tried many different reboot button combinations but my phone is so dead it won’t do a thing. Now when I plug it in to charge the battery symbol no longer shows up. It’s just completely drained. — Sam

Solution: Hi Sam. There’s no direct way to know what may be wrong so you’re supposed to narrow down the possible causes first. Unfortunately, in this case, the entire elimination process also involves opening the phone up and testing some hardware components like the charging port, battery, power IC, and the motherboard in general. That leaves you with doing limited software troubleshooting, which may not provide a full picture of the problem. If the phone has become totally unresponsive and won’t even boot to other modes, you can assume that bad hardware is to blame. You won’t be able to do anything at this point so the best course of action for you is to send the phone in. if possible you want to let Samsung handle the repair process, especially if it’s still within the warranty.

Problem #5: Galaxy Note 5 S Voice app not responding

Hi there. I have a Samsung Note 5 for about a year now and for the past month there has been a problem with my S Voice app. When i tap on it, the phone freezes and after a couple minutes a recognition legal info appears. i press “I agree” and then “next” but then the phone keeps on freezing and then a little window appears saying: “S Voice app isn’t responding. Do you want to close it.” i tried to go to the app manager and press force stop but it didn’t help. Also tried to disable and enable the app but it still didn’t help. Would really like for some help 🙂 Sincerely. —  Eden

Solution: Hi Eden. Other Samsung apps may be to blame so make sure that you try to Force Stop or clear their cache and data as well. If that won’t fix it, try to factory reset  in case an unknown software glitch is causing the problem.

Problem #6: Galaxy Note 5 stuck in Samsung logo screen, won’t turn on

Hello. My name is Tracy Johnson. I own a Samsung Galaxy Note 5 and it has recently stopped working. It suddenly for no reason gets stuck on the flashing Samsung logo when I try to boot it up. I have tried the soft reset many times. I have put it in rice overnight in case it had humidity although it didn’t get wet. I could not get it to even bring up the safe mode option when I held down the menu key while booting.  I haven’t tried the factory reset yet because I have info on the phone I really don’t want to lose and I am hoping there is another option. Please help. — Trace.33

Solution: Hi Trace.33. The only thing that you can do now is to boot the phone to alternate modes so you can do their respective follow up troubleshooting. For example, if you can boot your phone to recovery mode, you should try to wipe the cache partition first to see if that will fix the problem. If not, you must either do a factory reset or manual flashing of stock firmware. Either of these procedures involves wiping the phone’s storage device so you’ll still your files no matter what.

There’s no way another device such as a PC can access your phone’s storage device in your phone’s state so file recovery is out of the question.

For reference, here are the steps on how to boot your phone to other modes and their respective follow up troubleshooting steps:

Boot in Recovery mode:

  1. Charge the phone for at least 30 minutes.
  2. Press and then hold the Home and Volume UP keys, then press and hold the Power key.
  3. When the Samsung Galaxy S7 shows on the screen, release the Power key but continue holding the Home and Volume Up keys.
  4. When the Android logo shows, you may release both keys and leave the phone be for about 30 to 60 seconds.
  5. Using the Volume Down key, navigate through the options and highlight ‘wipe cache partition.’
  6. You can either wipe the cache partition or do a factory reset when in this mode.

Boot in Download Mode:

  1. Charge the phone for at least 30 minutes.
  2. Press and then hold the Home and Volume DOWN keys, then press and hold the Power key.
  3. When the Samsung Galaxy S7 shows on the screen, release the Power key but continue holding the Home and Volume DOWN keys.
  4. Wait until the Download screen appears.
  5. If you can boot the phone in download mode but not in other modes, that means that your only way out may be to flash a stock or custom firmware.
  6. Use Google to look for a guide on how to do it.

Boot in safe mode:

  1. Charge the phone for at least 30 minutes.
  2. Press and hold the Power button.
  3. Once the ‘Samsung Galaxy S7’ logo appears, release the Power key and immediately press and hold the Volume Down button.
  4. Continue holding the button until the phone finishes rebooting.
  5. Once you see the text “Safe mode” at the bottom left corner of the screen, release the Volume Down button.
  6. The only difference of safe mode from normal mode is that the former prevents third party apps from running. If you can boot the phone in safe mode but not in normal mode, uninstall all apps until the issue (that prevents you from booting normally) is eliminated.

Problem #7: Galaxy Note 5 power button not working, “systemUI isn’t responding” error

Earlier I was having issue with my phone that its ON button Power button won’t  respond, same with Home button. Then screen shows error like “process isn’t responding,” “systemUI isn’t responding,” etc. with other not responding issues. Then I decided to do Factory reset. During that time, it wiped the data completely, but did not boot for long time.

Then it shows ‘dm-verity failed… error. I restarted it. Then finally it shows the screen where it confirms that it done the factory reset. Now still I see the Power button and Home button not responding sometimes. Can you please help why is it so. and what should I do next? Thanks in advance. You are doing the great work by providing the solutions to the users. — Deepak

Solution: Hi Deepak. We think you have a bad hardware issue on your phone so we doubt if you can fix it on your level. That factory reset did not change anything is a strong indication that it is a non-software problem. We don’t know the full history of your phone so there’s very little information that can help us get a complete picture of where the point of failure is. The general rule in Android troubleshooting is to try all software troubleshooting first. If nothing changes after you’ve exhausted all software troubleshooting, you can assume that there is a hardware malfunction somewhere.

To fix your issue, we suggest that you send the phone to Samsung so their technician can examine the hardware and do appropriate repair if necessary.
