Fix your Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge that can’t send/receive text messages, other texting issues

Text messaging is the most basic feature of your #Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge (#S6Edge) or any mobile phones for that matter. It shouldn’t have any issues whatsoever when try to send or receive data over cellular network especially when it was properly provisioned by your service provider. But the thing is smartphone owners experience texting problems daily and that’s what we have to face in this post.


There are three text messaging related issues I included in this post. Try to go through them to understand how they occur, what the behaviour of the phone is when they occur and learn how to fix those problems. You may also learn that these problems are common and they might happen to you sooner or later. So, it would be wise to learn ways to fix them even before they occur.

Galaxy S6 Edge can’t send/receive text messages due to error

Problem: My Galaxy S6 Edge is having a problem from time to time. It means the issue occurs randomly; I cannot send text messages sometimes nor can I receive some when the issue is happening. There are times when I open the Messages app, the notice that says “Unfortunately, Messages has stopped” will pop up and when I tap OK, it closes and I can’t do anything. It will keep on happening for an hour or two until it gets fixed on its own. It’s really annoying because when somebody texts me, I can’t read them and I too can’t compose a message. Help me please.

Troubleshooting: I understand you’re complaining about not being able to send and receive text messages but the real problem here is that the Messages app, which is the default messaging app of your phone, is crashing and when it does, it doesn’t get fixed until your reboot your phone or use an app that opens it. Since you said the problem gets fixed on its own, I think this is only a minor problem and may be fixed by doing the procedure below.

Step 1: When the problem occurs, force reboot  your phone

I don’t know if the phone freezes or hangs when the error occurs but you should do the Forced Reboot procedure nonetheless. It will reboot the phone and refresh its memory. It might not be enough to fix the problem temporarily but at least, your device will be usable after that. Press and hold the Volume Down button and the Power key for 10 to 15 seconds to restart the device. But if the problem still occurs after the force reboot, the next step may help.

Step 2: Clear cache and data of the Messages app

This will reset the app back to its default settings. It may delete your messages and your preferences but it’s a procedure you cannot overlook when such kind of error occurs.

  1. From any Home screen, tap Apps.
  2. Tap Settings.
  3. Scroll to ‘APPLICATIONS,’ then tap Application manager.
  4. Swipe right to the ALL screen.
  5. Scroll to and tap Messages.
  6. Tap Clear cache.
  7. Tap Clear data button, then OK.

While it’s a necessary procedure to be done to try to fix this issue, there’s no guarantee it can fix it. Therefore, if the problem continues after clearing the cache and the data, continue your troubleshooting and this time, try to isolate the problem.

Step 3: Restart your device in safe mode

The Safe mode remedy is actually just an procedure you do to find out if the problem is caused by one or some of your downloaded apps or by the pre-installed apps. When in this state, the phone temporarily disables all third-party apps leaving only the default services and pre-installed apps running in the background. So, if the problem gets fixed in this state, it’s clear enough that it’s caused by third-party apps. Just find them and uninstall them, that should fix the issue. Otherwise, continue troubleshooting your device.

This is how you start your phone in safe mode, by the way.

  1. Press and hold the Volume Down and Power keys for 20 to 30 seconds.
  2. Once you see the Samsung logo, release the Power key immediately but continue pressing the Volume Down key.
  3. Your phone should continue booting up and you will be prompted to unlock your phone as usual.
  4. You will know if the phone successfully booted in safe mode if the text “Safe mode” is displayed at the lower-left corner of the screen.

Step 4: Wipe the cache partition

This procedure may help fix the problem especially if it’s caused by firmware issues after a firmware update. It will delete the system cache, which the phone will replaced after the phone booted up successfully after deleting.

  1. Turn off the device.
  2. Press and hold the following three buttons at the same time: Volume Up key, Home key, and Power key.
  3. When the phone vibrates, release the Power key but continue to press and hold the Volume Up key and the Home key.
  4. When the Android System Recovery screen appears, release the Volume Up and Home keys.
  5. Press the Volume Down key to highlight ‘wipe cache partition.’
  6. Press the Power key to select.
  7. When the wipe cache partition is complete, ‘Reboot system now’ is highlighted.
  8. Press the Power key to restart the device.

Step 5: Reset your Galaxy S6 Edge

Lastly, if the problem still occurs, then you have no other choice but to reset the phone. It will certainly fix the problem but it always comes at the end because of the work it entails in backing up all your data and files. Nevertheless, it’s a necessary thing to do if the problem continues after doing the steps above:

  1. Turn off your Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge.
  2. Press and hold the Volume Up, Home and Power keys together.
  3. When the device powers on and displays ‘Power on logo’, release all keys and the Android icon will appear on the screen.
  4. Wait until the Android Recovery Screen appears after about 30 seconds.
  5. Using the Volume Down key, highlight the option, ‘wipe data/factory reset’ and press the Power key to select it.
  6. Press the Vol Down button again until the option ‘Yes — delete all user data’ is highlighted and then press the Power key to select it.
  7. After the reset is complete, highlight ‘Reboot system now’ and hit the Power key to restart the phone.

Galaxy S6 Edge still shows there are unread messages

Problem: When I receive a text message and I reply from the quick text box, the notification still shows that I have not opened the message even though I sent a message. How can I fix it?
Troubleshooting: Text messaging is the most basic way of communication through a mobile device. Having an android phone, you will be notified that a text message has been delivered to your phone number through an envelop icon that has not yet opened on the notifications. But what would be the workarounds if your Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge still shows that you have not opened the message received even if you already sent a reply.
Step 1. Make sure that you’ve opened the received message from the notifications on inbox.
Ensuring that step has done, the envelop on the notifications will certainly removed and it means that you have successfully read and opened the message. (Note: Make sure that the number of envelop received or message on the notifications corresponds to the number of messages in the inbox.)
Step 2. Inbox is full.
Another thing to consider is the memory available in inbox . If inbox is full it will let you know by seeing the envelop icon on the notifications. In deleting messages;

  1. Open Messaging App and look for the messages that you wish to delete by finding the person’s name on the lists.
  2. Touch and hold the person’s name and a tick box will appear beside it.
  3. Tap the Bin Icon to delete the thread.
  4. To Confirm, tap Delete on the pop-up which appears.

Step 3. After checking inbox and same problem is still there, better check Outbox, Draft or Unsent Messages because the same icon will be appearing on the notifications.
Step 4. If issue still persists, simply restart your Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge.

Receivers often don’t get the pictures sent through text

Problem: When I send pictures via text to others, the receivers often do not get the pictures or the pictures are half green or severely distorted. My pictures are the only ones they received are distorted. So my phone is the common denominator. Turning it on and off, rebooting and removing the battery all did not help.
Troubleshooting: This problem  can be mostly fixed by your own.  In fact, this may be caused by a glitch on the messaging app. If this happens without any apparent reason, you may perform Clear the Cache and Data of the Messaging App.

  1. In your Home Screen, tap Apps icon.
  2. Look for Settings.
  3. Go to Applications then Application Manager.
  4. Swipe to ALL tab.
  5. Find and tap Messages.
  6. Touch the Force Close button.
  7. Tap Storage.
  8. And Tap Clear Cache and then Clear Data, Delete.

  1. My mom has been having a problem with her Samsung galaxy s6 edge, it just started recently. She’s unable to send and receive text messages, including picture, group, and regular one person text messages. It keeps saying her messages failed to send.
