How to fix your Samsung Galaxy A5 that turned off on its own and won’t turn back on [Troubleshooting Guide]

The black screen of death (BSoD) has at least, three variations that we know of. The most common of them all is the black screen with flashing blue light, which leaves an impression that the device is actually still powered on and you have unread notifications or messages. Most of the time, that’s really the case.

Let’s just stick to this variation of this problem as we’ve received quite a lot of complaints from our readers regarding this issue and the subject of our troubleshooting in this post is the Samsung Galaxy A5. We will try to consider every possibility and rule them out one by one until we can determine what the problem really is. So, continue reading this post as it may help you.

Troubleshooting Galaxy A5 that has a black screen with flashing blue light

Problem: My Samsung Galaxy A5 just turned itself off and it won’t come back on the only thing on the phone is a blue light on the top left hand corner.

Solution: As what you’ve said that your device is unresponsive but the LED above the screen is lighting up, it is evident that your phone does not have hardware issue. Perhaps, this might be just a minor performance-related problem.

Occasionally, this issue occurs if the files and data become outdated wherein the firmware is unable to recognize them and that might be the reason the system will crash without apparent cause. But the good thing is there is a big chance you can fix the issue without bringing the device to the shop and with all that being said, here’s what I suggest you do about your Galaxy A5:

Step 1: Perform a Soft reset on your phone for it might be just a glitch in the system

Since we do not know what caused the problem, we have to play safe for our first procedure and the best thing to do is to perform a soft reset on your phone. Through forced reboot the memory will be refreshed and this also closes all applications that are running in the background. Just press and hold the Volume Down and Power buttons at the same time for 7-10 seconds and wait until your phone boots up.

If you owned a phone with a removable battery, then you must be familiar with the battery pull procedure tech reps often tell you to do so. This is the equivalent of that but this time you just have to press and hold a combination of buttons to simulate battery disconnect since your Galaxy A5 doesn’t have a removable battery.

If however, your phone is still not booting up after this, then move on to the next step.

Step 2: Verify that there’s enough battery to power up the device

As a user it is important that you should know if the battery is defective or not because if it is, that would be the reason why your phone is unable to turn on. Try to connect it to the charger and let it charge for a few minutes. The moment you connect it to the charger, you would immediately know if there’s some issue with the hardware especially if charging signs such as the battery icon with a bolt in it doesn’t show on the screen or if the LED notification at the top-left of the screen doesn’t light up. With or without those signs, allow your phone to charge for a few minutes because if the battery got completely drained, it would take a few minutes before those signs show up.

But assuming those charging signs aren’t showing up even after allowing the phone to charge for a few minutes, try to do what you did in the first step but this time with the phone connected to its charger. It is still possible that the system crashed and the battery got completely drained. However, if your phone still won’t respond after this, then proceed to the next step.

Step 3: Try to reboot your phone in Safe mode

We can only do so much about a phone that won’t turn on or charge. After doing the first two steps and you’re still left with a black and unresponsive screen, then you should try booting your phone up into a different environment and I suggest you try the Safe mode first.

In this environment, all third-party apps and their respective services are temporarily disabled. If one of them is causing the problem, then your phone should be able to boot up in this mode without any issues and assuming you’re successful, the next thing you should do is find the app that’s causing the problem and uninstall it. Follow the steps below to perform these procedures.

How to restart your Galaxy A5 in Safe mode

  1. Turn the device off.
  2. Press and hold the Power key past the screen with the device name.
  3. When ‘SAMSUNG’ appears on the screen, release the Power key.
  4. Immediately after releasing the Power key, press and hold the Volume down key.
  5. Continue to hold the Volume down key until the device finishes restarting.
  6. Safe mode will display in the bottom left corner of the screen.
  7. Release the Volume down key when you see ‘Safe Mode’.

How to uninstall applications from your Galaxy A5

  1. From any Home screen, tap the Apps icon.
  2. Tap Settings.
  3. Tap Applications.
  4. Tap Application manager.
  5. Tap the desired application
  6. Tap Uninstall.
  7. Tap Uninstall again to confirm.

Step 4: Try to reboot your phone in Recovery mode

After booting it in safe mode and your phone still failed to turn on, the best thing that you should do is to restart it in recovery mode. This environment is actually the fail-safe for almost all Android devices that even if your device has some serious issues with the firmware for as long as it’s not modified one way or the other, it may still be able to boot up in this mode. When successful, you can do a couple of things that might just fix the problem for good but please note that if we can bring the phone to start in this mode, we’re already halfway to fixing the issue since your phone already turned on.

But to elaborate more on what you need to do if ever you’ve successfully booted your phone up in this mode, you can try wiping the cache partition which deletes all system caches and after which, all those caches will be replaced with new ones. If that wouldn’t work, then you can do the Master Reset, which will delete all your personal files and data but may fix the problem effectively.

How to reboot your phone Galaxy A5 in Recovery mode and wipe cache partition

  1. Turn off the device.
  2. Press and hold the Volume Up key and the Home key, then press and hold the Power key.
  3. When the device logo screen displays, release only the Power key
  4. When the Android logo displays, release all keys (‘Installing system update’ will show for about 30 – 60 seconds before showing the Android system recovery menu options).
  5. Press the Volume down key several times key to highlight ‘wipe cache partition.’
  6. Press the Power key to select.
  7. Press the Volume down key to highlight ‘yes’ and press the Power key to select.
  8. When the wipe cache partition is complete, ‘Reboot system now’ is highlighted.
  9. Press the Power key to restart the device.

How to start your phone up in Recovery Mode and do the Master Reset

  5. Press the Volume down key several times key to highlight ‘wipe data / factory reset.’
  6. Press Power button to select.
  7. Press the Volume down key until ‘Yes — delete all user data’ is highlighted.
  8. Press Power button to select and start the master reset.
  9. When the master reset is complete, ‘Reboot system now’ is highlighted.
  10. Press the Power key to restart the device.
