How to Fix Facebook Messenger Not Showing Messages

Messenger not showing chats is usually caused by sync delay, filter settings, or an app cache issue. Use the steps below to restore missing conversations and message refresh.

Method 1: Check internet and refresh inbox

Messenger can appear empty when connection is unstable or partially blocked. A quick refresh on stable data often restores chat list instantly.

  1. Switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data.
  2. Turn Airplane Mode on for 10 seconds, then off.
  3. Open Messenger and pull down to refresh chats.
  4. Check whether message list reappears.

Method 2: Review filters, archive, and message requests

Messages may be hidden by inbox filters rather than deleted. Checking archived and request folders often reveals missing chats.

  1. Open Messenger search and type the contact name.
  2. Check Archived chats.
  3. Check Message Requests and Spam folders.
  4. Set inbox to show all chats, not filtered views.

Method 3: Clear cache and update Messenger

Corrupt local cache can prevent proper message rendering. Updating and clearing cache usually fixes display and sync bugs.

  1. Go to Settings > Apps > Messenger > Storage.
  2. Tap Clear cache.
  3. Update Messenger from App Store or Play Store.
  4. Reopen app and sign in again if prompted.
