Galaxy A3 not getting notifications from Facebook Messenger and Gmail, other issues

Problem 1: Galaxy A3 not getting notifications from Facebook Messenger and Gmail

Notifications for Facebook Messenger and Gmail (at least these) are not happening unless I open the app. Brand new Galaxy A3 2017, running Android 7. I turned off the energy saving to make sure, and both apps are allowed to show notifications in the settings. Whatsapp works in case that helps. Cleared cache on the apps. Restarted phone, still not working. — Email.jramos

Solution: Hi Email.jramos. There may be an issue with the BadgeProvider app so make sure that you troubleshoot it as well. To do that, you can try to clear its cache and data to see what happens. BadgeProvider is a system app that alerts users of new notifications from apps, and Android operating system in general. Like any other app, it may sometimes act up due to other apps or new updates. Your best bet for it is to return all its settings back to their defaults. Here’s how:

  1. Open the Settings menu either through your notification shade (drop-down) or through the Settings app in your app drawer.
  2. Navigate down to “Apps”. This may be renamed to something like Applications or Application Manager in OEM skinned versions of Android 6 or 7.
  3. Tap More settings icon at the upper right hand side (three-dot icon).
  4. Tap Show system apps.
  5. Once in there, look for BadgeProvider  app and tap it.
  6. You’ll now see a list of stuff that gives you information about the app, including Storage, Permissions, Memory Use, and more. These are all clickable items. You’ll want to click on Storage.
  7. Tap Clear Data button.

Should clearing BadgeProvider app’s data won’t help, do a factory reset. Here’s how:

  1. Create a backup of your important files.
  2. Turn off the device.
  3. Press and hold the Volume Up key and the Home key, then press and hold the Power key.
  4. When the device logo screen displays, release only the Power key.
  5. When the Android logo displays, release all keys (‘Installing system update’ will show for about 30 – 60 seconds before showing the Android system recovery menu options).
  6. Press the Volume down key several times key to highlight ‘wipe data / factory reset.’ Press Power button to select.
  7. Press the Volume down key until ‘Yes — delete all user data’ is highlighted.
  8. Press Power button to select and start the master reset.
  9. When the master reset is complete, ‘Reboot system now’ is highlighted.
  10. Press the Power key to restart the device.

Problem 2: Galaxy A3 Bluetooth won’t work with Scala Packtalk motorcycle helmet Bluetooth kit

Hi there. I have recently changed from a Samsung S4 mini to an A3. I have a Cardo Scala Packtalk motorcycle Bluetooth kit. The S4 worked perfectly I could make and receive calls fine and using vox could speak the command ‘Music On’ and the music stored on the phone played through the helmet headset. Similarly the vox command ‘Music Off’ would stop the playback. I can’t deem to get this to happen with the A3.

I haven’t changed any settings on the Packtalk and have simply paired the A3. If I manually start the music using the phone’s interface I can hear the music through the headset, what am i missing here? — Paul

Solution: Hi Paul. Bluetooth devices work with other Bluetooth-enabled gadgets only if both support a common profile. Some profiles work in conjunction with other Bluetooth profiles in order so that a combinations of tasks can be done simultaneously. For example, music streaming over two devices via Bluetooth is often achieved by using two common Bluetooth profiles — A2DP and AVRCP. We are not familiar with Scala Packtalk kit and what profiles it uses but it needs to be compatible with your current phone in order to do whatever function it’s missing right now. As far as we know, the Galaxy A3 supports these Bluetooth profiles:

  • A2DP
  • DI
  • HFP
  • HID
  • HOGP
  • HSP
  • MAP
  • OPP
  • PAN
  • PBAP

This list may or may not be accurate as Samsung can change them by region. For a more accurate list of Bluetooth profiles for your particular phone model, you can contact your local Samsung support. Once you have the accurate list of profiles, contact the maker of your motorcycle helmet Bluetooth kit and ask for the list of its supported profiles as well. While you’re at it, make sure to also ask the manufacturer what Bluetooth profile makes the missing feature to work. Then, compare the list with that of your Samsung list and see if the necessary profiles to make the missing feature to work. If any of the devices is missing the necessary profile, you’re out of luck as there’s no way to add one. In this case, you must find a phone replacement that supports the profiles your motorcycle helmet needs.

Problem 3: Galaxy A3 Facebook app won’t load properly, won’t open after an update

Certain apps refuse to open: Facebook opens, but clicking on a link sends me straight to the blue ‘loading page of Facebook. Pages manager app refuses to Open, but I can access this via my Facebook page. Certain games (not very large) start loading and then jump back to the home screen (i.e. close). The Google search bar on my home screen opens, but as soon as I start typing, it closes. Other apps (strava , Sfit, etc.) Are still functioning. I’ve done a software update, and tried turning the phone off and on (the basics first, right?) All apps are up-to-date and the phone is on 95% optimisation. I Don’t know what else to try. Solution: Hi Mist-chevious. If you encounter problems right after installing a system update, these are the basic software troubleshooting that you should do.

Cache partition wipe

This is the first troubleshooting step that we recommend. It addresses possible issues that comes from a corrupted system cache. Sometimes, system and app updates corrupt the system cache which is stored in the cache partition. This can lead to all sorts of problems. Fortunately, any system cache-related issue can easily be fixed by simply deleting the old cache. Your phone will then build the cache from scratch over time. Don’t worry as wiping the system cache won’t result to user data files like photos, videos, etc. To wipe the system cache, follow these steps:

  1. Turn off the device.
  2. Press and hold the Volume Up key and the Home key, then press and hold the Power key.
  3. When the device logo screen displays, release only the Power key
  4. When the Android logo displays, release all keys (‘Installing system update’ will show for about 30 – 60 seconds before showing the Android system recovery menu options).
  5. Press the Volume down key several times key to highlight wipe cache partition.
  6. Press the Power key to select.
  7. Press the Volume down key to highlight ‘yes’ and press the Power key to select.
  8. When the wipe cache partition is complete, ‘Reboot system now’ is highlighted.
  9. Press the Power key to restart the device.

Install app updates

Incompatible or outdated apps are often the main reason for a lot of issues following an update. Installing Android updates does not mean apps are automatically updated as well, especially those devices that are not set to automatically install updates. By default, the Google Play Store app is set to download and install apps on its own. However, if you changed this setting before, make sure to manually check if all your apps runs their latest versions from time to time.

If you’ve already checked them before contacting us, simply skip this suggestion.

Troubleshoot individual apps

If you’re only having an issue with one or two apps after an update, that means that the cause may be specific to them only. Make sure to uninstall then reinstall them to see if that will help.

Do a factory reset

A more drastic solution that you can try is wiping the phone clean to start everything from scratch. If you haven’t tried it yet, be sure to refer to our suggestion for Email.jramos above for the steps.

Problem 4: Galaxy A3 wifi keeps disconnecting, won’t detect any wifi network

My phone sometimes sees my home wifi and sometimes it doesn’t. from time to time after rebooting it it will get connected but after some time the wifi disappears. it’s not a problem with the router as i can’t see any other wifis too. sometimes when it sees my wifi it can’t connect to it and says that the network is saved and secured. There are even times when after reboot, the wifi wont even turn on. i did restored the factory settings and it didn’t work. — Kuba

Solution: Hi Email.jramos. Wifi problems can sometimes be caused by a bad system cache so be sure to wipe the cache partition first. Should nothing change after doing that, follow the reset of our suggestions for Mist-chevious. The circumstances in your case may be different but the general solutions for a lot of Android issues are the ones mentioned in this post. Don’t forget to make sure that you install the latest firmware and app versions for your device. At times, a networking chip also needs to run its latest firmware version so it can work properly with a new operating system. Updates for network chip firmware are often bundled with Samsung updates so be sure to install them whenever they become available.

Should any of our software solutions above won’t help, that means that there may be a deeper hardware issue, possibly a bad chip, that causes wifi to drop at random. Make sure to contact Samsung so the phone can be repaired or replaced.
