Android Phones Launching in 2024 Will Be Required to Run Android 10 by Default

Google Mobile Services is a license that Android manufacturers need to get before getting access to all of Google’s core services including the apps that it offers. The folks over at XDA have discovered some documentation pertaining to Google Mobile Services which has revealed something very interesting. Well, Google is apparently looking to make it mandatory for every smartphone launching under the Android brand to run Android 10 onboard. The document mentions that phones that launch after January 31, 2020, will be required to adhere to these norms.

This is great news for those concerned with Android and its future. The platform has been plagued by fragmentation for quite some time now, and it’s no surprise that Google has finally decided to take this step.

The documentation has also revealed that manufacturers need to adapt to the stock Android gestures and even prioritize it over their own gestures. A move like this may not go well with companies like Samsung that offer heavy modifications over the stock Android interface.

Overall, this news is great for customers who invest in an Android smartphone from 2020 and beyond. One can imagine that Google will follow the same protocol for each major Android release from now on, which should hopefully bring things back on track. There’s no word on what Google plans to do for devices that are running Android 8.0 and 9.0 right now, although Pixel device owners should be covered for the next couple of years, at least.
