The Android 8.1 operating system might not seem like much when compared to the Android 10, however, this is sufficient. 6). The Cat S61

One thing we love about the Cat S61 is the fact that it comes with its unique thermal imaging and laser measurement. This S61 is no ordinary device. It comes with most of the features that you can easily find in a rugged device. One thing we love about this device is the fact that it can be used on any construction site and pretty rough and remote terrains.

While most people might not exploit the S61’s considerable talents, but the people who do so, will certainly find it invaluable. For us, the Caterpillar brand is often though of as a leading supplier when it comes to construction machinery and equipment. However, the company has successfully licensed that brand out to different companies. It gave out the license to a wide variety of different manufacturers producing everything from boots to smartphones.

However, the smartphone manufacturer behind these Cat phones are the Bullitt Group. They are fully behind the Cat series of phones. The manufacturer has been able to find success through targeting a niche audience and building them a device that helps cater to a wide range of needs. One thing we love about this S61 is the most recent refinement that were launched for these flagship series. Furthermore, the phone has been aimed squarely at people especially construction experts that need a rugged device for tough environments.

The S61 is actually a chunky device. This device is capable of surviving falls, impacts, bumps, and violent drops without a case. The manufacturer, Bullitt has gone a step further than that by packing in thermal imaging, laser measurement, and even air quality sensors. This various features can be used effectively by engineers, plumbers, builders, farmers, the military, and other groups seeking a particular set of skills from their phones.

One thing about this device is that it is clear from the onset when you pick the Cat S61 up that it has been produced to be tough. We love the thick, matte aluminum frame which comes with a glossy edge. This edge creatively contrasts with the black plastic, and a distinctive, angled protrusion at the top bears that has the Cat logo.

Furthermore, this device comes with a display screen size of about 5.2 inch and comes with three visible buttons. These three buttons can be used to access recent apps, home, and back.

The 5.2-inch display has three physical buttons below it for access to back, home, and recent apps, enabling you to navigate the Android interface even if your hands are wet or dirty. There’s a polycarbonate lip around the screen to prevent it from touching down if you drop your Cat S61; it also comes with a screen protector already applied over the Gorilla Glass 5 display.

The device is known to come with an average IPS LCD which comes with a resolution of 1,920 x 1,080-pixel resolution. When we used it, it was comfortable to read on for long periods, however we discovered that the brightness of the device struggled with the sun when we took it outdoors.

To improve things, we were able to frequently override the auto-brightness. The device is one chunky mass that can survive all the different types of falls, bumps, and dunks without necessarily having a case. Right underneath the device at the bottom edge of it, we have a speaker and a flap which opens to show out the USB-C charging port. You can use this port to power it for as long as you like.

On the right side of this device, there is a textured power button while the separate volume buttons can be found further down. This device comes with the orange-colored programmable key which can be found around the left edge, which is used to initiate a handy physical shortcut. Additionally, the device is best suited for the push-to-talk mode.

Alternatively, the user could just map out two distinct functions like the flashlight while answering or ending calls by using a short or  the long press. Nevertheless, the device boasts of another flap that is cleverly used to hide the SIM plus the MicroSD card tray. At the top of the device comes one more last flap that has the standard 3.5mm audio jack at the back of it.

When you flip over to the back of the device, there is a protrusion which accommodates the Flir camera sensor. This Flir camera sensor is pretty useful for thermal imaging. The thermal imaging  property is located above the regular 16MP camera lens. Furthermore, we have a subtle Flir logo close to  it.

However, it’s the pretty big, bright shiny Cat logo that will definitely catch your eye. Moreover, to help cater to the needs of people working in a construction site, there’s the laser lens for measuring distances which is located at the bottom left of this device.

The back side of this device is textured ergonomically to enable a more improved grip. This makes the device to be comfortable to the hold. While it does come with a weight of about 260g the textured pattern located at the backside helps stabilize the grip at the back of the device. In order to put this in proper perspective there are other phones like the iPhone X and the Samsung Galaxy S9 that weighs pretty close while being regular phones.

Most people will want to use their two hands with this device. However, there is an advantage to the bulkiness of the device. One thing about this cat is that it can be seriously tough. You can drop the phone from falls from about 1.8 meters (6 feet). It can fall onto concrete, while having temperature ranges from a pretty low -13 degrees Celsius to 131 degrees Fahrenheit (that’s -25 to 55 Celcius), and even salt mist spray.

We also love the IP69 and IP68 rating of this device. With the rating, you can easily submerge this device inside water and it can go down for close to a depth of about 3 meters (which is almost 10 feet). This can last for about one hour. The device comes with a protective feature that enables it to handle both close-range high pressure or high temperature water jets.

When we tried it, we discovered that the touchscreen of this device still functions with your fingers wet. But, there seems to be a pretty handy glove mode, so this can be used when you have your gloves on. We tested the MIL STD 810G and discovered that the device held up to its promise.

This happened when we had dropped the device several times. When we checked we discovered that the phone has had a pretty slight mishap. It came off with a tiny ding in the metal frame. One thing about this device is that it has been developed to be used in different dusty, dirty, or wet conditions. You will not need to worry about the condition of the device as it holds well against all of these.

This Cat S61 is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 630 that is inside which is supported by a 4GB of RAM. This option also comes with a 64GB storage plus the MicroSD card slot. With this card slot, you can expand your storage option to up to 256GB. When it comes to the functioning of this device, we were quite disappointed about the performance of this device.

We love the smooth navigation which is marred often by some definite lag which occurs during the loading up of certain apps. The lagging still occurs when switching between apps. This device is not a full engine as it is unable to handle certain functions.

When we tested PUBG: Mobile, the device had recommended that we play this according to the lowest graphical settings. Even when we had tried this, we discovered that it was still glitchy. When we played Super Mario run with the device, we didn’t have problems. However, this looks like it has taken some time to load.

If you love cameras, you will certainly fall in love with the camera on this device. The high res camera makes sure that you take some of the best pictures when working in remote areas. The camera function really completes this bulky device.

Pros

  • The device is rugged and comes with the IP68 rating
  • We love the thermal imaging camera of this device.
  • Excellent battery life
  • The device has pretty useful measurement tools.
  • Works well for use in any construction site and rough terrains.

  • Comes with an average IPS LCD.
  • The device can be pretty expensive
  • The device is rather heavy and chunky
  • During operation, the device can be sluggish at times

  1. Jesy j9s is waterproof phone, the smartphone looks very impressive, its functionality is also great, and for the average user, there will be more than enough.

  2. jesy j9s Camera has 16 megapixels with an external lens made of sapphire crystal. Also, it features an optical stabilization system.
The front Camera comes with 8 megapixels. For the Quality of the Pictures, I have to say it is really good.

  3. These were great for its time; expensive but worth it… ruggeds were rare back then: by the way! Have you seen the agm line ? They remember me this one: but since they are way cheaper the first time that my agm a8 fell down from my pocket i almost got a heartatack … but it survived without a scratch 🙂 and now i am looking for the way to got myself a x1 18k gold edition

  4. Yeah… this title is click bait… shake on you especially since quotes are from winter.

Anything android pre 5.0 is… oh yeah obsolete due to security issues.

  5. So sad people release phones and then never look at them again, support them, update them or keep their users secure.

If just one (not stupidly priced) phone came out with the latest software (and not worrying about QHD, FHD is fine), I’d jump on it.

  6. my favourite ruggedphone is the agm x1 I have bought AGM x1 a month ago the and I have to say that I am very satisfied. The phone is perfect: incredibly durable and surprisingly powerful (I would have never said that, like you) and, a very important thing, that really makes me love this device, is the battery life!! 3 days by using it continuously (working on site the apps istalled by AGM are very useful and the quality photo are really important for the workers etc.). Only with long battery life, the outdoor smartphone can truly be “outside”. 5400 mAh massive battery, combined with power-efficiency Snapdragon SOC processor, provide exceptional performance for the phone. Deep custom Samsung Super AMOLED display allows for vivid colors but low power consumption at the same time. Say goodbye to short battery life. Then the customer service of the company is good despite being halfway around the world (agm is a Chinese firm), in English they told me that my X1 will be updated to Android 7.0. And i am waiting for Barcelona, i heard something about the agm x2… o_o I hope you update your list!!! 😉 tell me what do you think
