Problem 1: Galaxy S6 Edge+ started freezing after the Nougat update

“Hey guys. I own the Galaxy S6 Edge+ and it has recently been updated to Nougat. At first, I was enjoying its performance but then it started to slow down and then there were instances the phone freezes up for a few seconds and it became worse. Now, my phone freezes for a few minutes before I can regain control over it. I just can’t use it like before so I badly need your help guys. Thanks.”

Troubleshooting: The first thing we have to consider here is the fact that the phone has been updated to Nougat and then the problem started. We have to rule out the possibility that this issue is caused by some corrupt system caches. So, to begin our troubleshooting, here’s what you should do:

Step 1: Reboot your phone in Recovery Mode and wipe cache partition

This will delete all system caches so the new firmware can create new ones that are completely compatible with it. System caches are prone to corruption and when a new firmware is installed, they become obsolete automatically. Some of them can still be used by the new system while many of them may cause problems when used.

However, since you don’t have access to individual caches, you need to delete them all at once and you can do so by rebooting your phone in Recovery Mode and wiping the cache partition:

  1. Turn off the device.
  2. Press and hold the Volume Up key and the Home key, then press and hold the Power key.
  3. When the Samsung Galaxy S6 edge+ logo screen displays, release only the Power key
  4. When the Android logo displays, release the Volume Up and the Home key (“Installing system update'” shows for about 30 – 60 seconds before showing the Android system recovery menu options).
  5. Press the Volume down key several times key to highlight “wipe cache partition.”
  6. Press the Power key to select.
  7. Press the Volume down key several times key to highlight “yes.”
  8. Press the Power key to select.
  9. When the wipe cache partition is complete, “Reboot system now” is highlighted.
  10. Press the Power key to restart the device.

The phone will take a little more time rebooting after wiping the cache partition but once it becomes active, observe closely to know if it still freezes and if so, move on to the next step.

Step 2: Reboot your phone in safe mode and observe

Observation is key to troubleshooting this kind of problem but we have to bring the phone start in other environments so that we would know if the issue is caused by other apps or services. In this step, I want you to start your phone up in safe mode. This will temporarily disable all third-party apps and if the problem is caused by one or some of them, then the phone shouldn’t freeze in this mode:

  1. Turn the device off.
  2. Press and hold the Power key.
  3. When “Samsung Galaxy S6 edge+” appears on the screen, release the Power key.
  4. Immediately after releasing the Power key, press and hold the Volume down key.
  5. Continue to hold the Volume down key until the device finishes restarting.
  6. Safe mode in the bottom-left corner of the screen.
  7. Release the Volume down key when you see Safe Mode.
  8. Uninstall apps that are causing a problem.

Step 3: Find that app that’s causing the problem and uninstall it

Assuming the phone doesn’t freeze in safe mode, then it’s most likely there’s a third-party app that’s causing the problem. The next thing you should do is find that app and then uninstall it but before that, I would suggest you clear its cache and data so all of the files it created will also be deleted.

“I badly need your help. My phone is a Galaxy S6 Edge+ and it froze for some reason and won’t respond when I press the power key. It stayed on the same screen since it froze and I don’t know what to do with it. Can you help?”

Troubleshooting: Your phone crashed, that’s what it is. It might be due to some apps that also crashed and affected your phone’s normal operation or it might have somehting to do with the firmware itself. With that said, here’s what you should do:

Step 1: Force reboot your phone to bring it back to life

Apparently, we cannot troubleshoot your device with it frozen and not responding. So, we need to make it respond and the Forced Reboot procedure is all it takes to bring your phone back to life.

Press and hold the Volume Down button and the Power key together for 10 seconds and your phone should reboot. After that, continue using your phone and see if the problem happens again and if so, then you just have to reset your phone to fix it.

Step 2: Master reset your Galaxy S6 Edge+

You don’t have to do other troubleshooting procedures if the problem occurs again. Alll you need to do is reset your phone but before you do that, make sure you make a backup of your important files and data. Then, disable the Factory Reset Protection so you won’t be locked out of your ph one. Then take note of your Google ID and password as you will need it to set up your phone after the reset.
