Fixing Gmail has stopped error on Galaxy S10e

We have encountered this problem several times in the past and I can assure you that it’s not really that serious of a problem. I am confident that you can make Gmail work perfectly again after doing the procedures here. With that said, here are the things you need to do to fix the Gmail has stopped error…

First solution: Force restart your phone

App crashes like this can be due to a minor firmware issue or even a glitch. Therefore, it’s best to start your troubleshooting by doing the forced restart. It is a simulated battery removal procedure that refreshes your phone’s memory and reloads all apps and services. If the Gmail has stopped error is indeed due to a minor firmware issue, then this procedure will fix it. Here’s how it’s done:

  1. Press and hold the Volume Down button and don’t release it yet.
  2. While holding down the volume button, press and hold the Power key as well.
  3. Keep both keys held down together for 15 seconds or until the Galaxy S10e logo shows on the screen.

Once the phone has rebooted, open the app and see if Gmail has stopped error still pops up. If it still does, then move on to the next solution.

Second solution: Clear Gmail’s cache

Android creates a cache for every app and service in your phone and while these files are small and temporary, they can cause a lot of trouble if they get corrupted. That could be the case here so the next thing you have to do is delete the old cache so that a new one will be deleted. Here’s how you do that:

  1. Swipe down from the top of the screen to pull the notification panel down.
  2. Tap the Settings icon on the upper-right corner.
  3. Scroll to and then tap Apps.
  4. Find and tap Gmail.
  5. Tap Storage.
  6. Touch Clear cache.

After doing this procedure, launch the app to see if the error Gmail has stopped still shows.

Third solution: Reset Gmail

When it comes to apps, a reset means deleting the app’s data files which often contain user’s settings and preferences. Any app-related problem can be fixed by this method so this is worth doing considering its effectiveness.

  1. Swipe down from the top of the screen to pull the notification panel down.
  2. Tap the Settings icon on the upper-right corner.
  3. Scroll to and then tap Apps.
  4. Find and tap Gmail.
  5. Tap Storage.
  6. Touch Clear data and then tap OK to confirm.
  7. Restart your phone to release some RAM.

Once you’re done doing this, launch the app to see if your Galaxy S10e still pops up the Gmail has stopped error. If it still does, try the next solution.

Fourth solution: Delete the system cache

Aside from app cache, the firmware also creates its own cache to make it run smoothly but when this gets corrupted or becomes obsolete, issues like this may occur. So, to rule this out, wipe the cache partition so that the system cache will be replaced with a new one. Here’s how:

  1. Turn off the device.
  2. Press and hold the Volume Up key and the Bixby key, then press and hold the Power key.
  3. When the Galaxy S10e logo shows, release all three keys.
  4. Your Galaxy S10e will continue to boot up into the Recovery Mode. Once you see a black screen with blue and yellow texts, proceed to the next step.
  5. Press the Volume down key several times to highlight wipe cache partition.
  6. Press Power key to select.
  7. Press the Volume down key to highlight yes, them and press the Power key to select.
  8. When the wipe cache partition is complete, Reboot system now is highlighted.
  9. Press the Power key to restart the device.

After this, observe your phone closely to know if the Gmail has stopped error still shows up. If it still does, then it’s time for the ultimate solution.

Fifth solution: Backup your files and reset your phone

A master reset will be able to fix this problem given that the firmware hasn’t been modified in any way. We don’t usually suggest this procedure without first exhausting all possible solutions but at this point, you don’t have much of a choice. So, take the time to backup all your important files and data, especially ones that are stored in your phone’s internal storage. After the backup process, remove your Google and Samsung accounts so that you won’t be locked out of your device after the reset. Once everything is in order, follow these steps to reset your phone:

  5. Press the Volume down key several times to highlight ‘wipe data / factory reset’.
  6. Press Power button to select.
  7. Press the Volume down key until ‘Yes’ is highlighted.
  8. Press Power button to select and start the master reset.
  9. When the master reset is complete, ‘Reboot system now’ is highlighted.
  10. Press the Power key to restart the device.
