My Samsung Galaxy A50 is frozen. Here’s how to unfreeze it.

When a smartphone like the Samsung Galaxy A50 freezes on a certain page, you can always expect it to be an issue with the firmware, unless you see some obvious signs of physical or liquid damage. Based on my experience however, a frozen device is always a firmware issue and while it is a very annoying problem, you can actually fix it on your own without having to bring the phone to the shop.

Unfreezing a frozen Galaxy A50

As I said earlier, you only need one solution to make your frozen Galaxy A50 respond again and that’s what I’m going to show you here. But before that, make sure that your phone doesn’t have any signs of physical or liquid damage because if there is, then you must bring it to the shop so that a technician can check it for you. But assuming the physical state of your phone is still good, then here’s what you should do:

First solution: Perform the forced restart

When it comes to freezing and all other minor firmware issues, a forced restart is the most effective solution. It’s a simulated battery removal that will refresh your phone’s memory, reload all its apps and services, and force the device to reboot even if it’s frozen and regardless whether it’s stuck on a black screen or an app. Here’s how you do it:

  1. Press and hold the Volume Down button and don’t release it yet.
  2. While holding down the volume button, press and hold the Power key as well.
  3. Keep both keys held down together for 15 seconds or until the Galaxy A50 logo shows on the screen.

If you were able to make your phone respond just by doing this, then the problem is already fixed at this point, although there’s no guarantee that the problem won’t happen again in the future. But if your Galaxy A50 is still frozen after doing the procedure for the first time, then try doing it a few more times before doing the next solution.

Second solution: Charge Galaxy A50 and do the forced restart

If the phone is stuck on a certain screen while you’re using it, then the first procedure will surely fix it. However, if it’s on a black screen and not responding no matter what you do, then it’s possible that it’s just a battery draining issue. Your Galaxy A50 may have run out of juice and the firmware may have crashed just before it powered down due to insufficient power. To address this, here’s what you should do:

  1. Plug the charger to a working wall outlet.
  2. Using the original cable, connect the phone to its charger.
  3. Regardless of whether the phone shows the charging symbol or not, leave it connected to the charger for at least 10 minutes.
  4. After which and while the phone is still connected to the charger, press and hold the Volume Down button and don’t release it yet.
  5. While holding down the volume button, press and hold the Power key as well.
  6. Keep both keys held down together for 15 seconds or until the Galaxy A50 logo shows on the screen.

This is just a pretty minor problem and you can surely fix it by doing these procedures provided that it’s not an issue with the hardware. But if your phone is still frozen on a black screen even after this, then it’s time you brought it to the store so that a technician can check it for you.

However, if you were able to make your phone boot up successfully after doing any of the procedures but the problem occurs every now and then, you must reset your phone to give it a fresh start. That should fix the issue and you can continue using your device without any issues. Before the reset though, make sure to create a copy of your important files and data. After which, remove your Google account from your phone so that you won’t be locked out, and then follow these steps to reset your phone:

  1. Turn off the device.
  2. Press and hold the Volume Up and Power keys.
  3. When the Galaxy A50 logo shows, release all three keys.
  4. Your Galaxy A50 will continue to boot up into the Recovery Mode. Once you see a black screen with blue and yellow texts, proceed to the next step.
  5. Press the Volume down key several times to highlight ‘wipe data / factory reset’.
  6. Press Power button to select.
  7. Press the Volume down key until ‘Yes’ is highlighted.
  8. Press Power button to select and start the master reset.
  9. When the master reset is complete, ‘Reboot system now’ is highlighted.
  10. Press the Power key to restart the device.
