How to remove or hide the notch on Huawei P20
Many new phones released in 2018 have a notch. If you don’t know what that is, that’s a black box on top of the screen that houses the selfie or front-facing camera and other sensors. For many Huawei fans, this addition may be pleasing to the eyes but some may find it a waste prime real screen estate or simply ugly. If you don’t like having the notch on the screen at all, there’s a neat trick Huawei has in store for you to remove it.
Technically, you are not removing the notch entirely because it’s a physical component. However, Huawei can make it disappear by extending a black bar on both sides of the notch to make the screen appear as if there’s no notch at all. Obviously, this will make the screen smaller but it’s a price to pay. Below are the two options that you can choose from on how to make the notch go away.
Method 1: Remove or hide the notch on Huawei P20 under Settings menu
Like other new Huawei top phones, the P20 sports a notch. If you happen to be not a fan of this new addition, you can always opt to remove or hide it. Doing so is easy as Huawei anticipates that some users may not like it. If you’re wondering how to remove the notch, just go under Settings to do it. Follow the steps below.
- Open the Settings app.
- Tap on Display.
- Tap on Notch.
- From the displayed options, you can pick Default, which turns on the notch, or Hide notch, which obviously does the trick of hiding it.
By selecting the Hide notch option, you are simply telling the system to add a black bar on both sides of the notch to give an appearance of a horizontal bezel. This only works when you’re on the Home screen, or when using select apps. If you open other apps that don’t support hiding of the notch, it will be displayed again. Unfortunately, in this case, all you can do is to bear with it.
Method 2: Remove or hide the notch on Huawei P20 using an app
The second method of hiding the notch is with the help of a third party app like Nacho Notch. This is a free app that you can download from the Play Store. It’s dedicated purpose is, you guessed it, hide the notch. There are other similar apps as well so if you don’t want Nacho Notch, just use a different one.
Unlike the built-in option to hide the notch, Nacho Notch will not make the spaces around the notch useless. It leaves the status bar around it usable, allowing notifications and icons to continue showing up at the top. To make it easier to use, you can put a Nacho Notch quick settings tile in the notification drawer. This allows you to quickly enable or disable it.
Nacho Notch doesn’t work on the lock screen so the notch should still be visible there.
To use the Nacho Notch app, follow these steps:
- Install the Nacho Notch app.
- Go to the quick settings, look for the ‘Hide notch’ icon and add it to the list.
- Toggle the setting on and off to see if it works.
- Done!
