How to remove or hide the notch on Huawei Mate 20 Pro

That Apple tends to dictate some smartphone trends and designs is known. One of the clearest example is the rage about the notch design among many top Android phones of 2018. There’s a number of phones now that sport the notch, including Huawei’s own Mate 20 Pro. For those who don’t know what a notch is, it’s the black box on top of the screen. There’s debate going on about the aesthetic quality of the notch so if you’re on the side who finds it ugly, you might want to find a way to remove it. In this short guide, we show you the two methods to get rid of the notch on your Huawei Mate 20 Pro.

Method 1: remove or hide the notch on Huawei Mate 20 Pro under Settings menu

There are some components that can’t be removed or fully hidden in the front side of Huawei Mate 20 Pro like the front-facing or selfie camera, the proximity sensors, or speakers. Like Apple, Android phone makers such as Huawei finds it useful to integrate a notch to house all of these sensors and camera together in one place. While some decided to further lessen the bezels, Huawei’s Mat 20 Pro sports a notch instead, which for many, is a not as pleasing it was hoped for. Fortunately, Huawei anticipates this backlash so they have a built-in option under Settings menu to hide the notch. Here’s how to access that option:

1. Open the Settings app.
2. Tap on Display.
3. Tap on Notch.
4. From the displayed options, you can pick Default, which turns on the notch, or Hid notch, which obviously does the trick of hiding it.

By selecting the Hide notch option, you are simply telling the system to add a black bar on both sides of the notch to give an appearance of a horizontal bezel. This only works when you’re on the Home screen, or when using select apps. If you open other apps that don’t support hiding of the notch, it will be displayed again. Unfortunately, in this case, all you can do is to bear with it.

Method 2: remove or hide the notch on Huawei Mate 20 Pro using an app

The second method of hiding the notch is with the help of a third party app like Nacho Notch. This is a free app that you can download from the Play Store. It’s dedicated purpose is, you guessed it, hide the notch. There are other similar apps as well so if you don’t want Nacho Notch, just use a different one.

Unlike the built-in option to hide the notch, Nacho Notch will not make the spaces around the notch useless. It leaves the status bar around it usable, allowing notifications and icons to continue showing up at the top. To make it easier to use, you can put a Nacho Notch quick settings tile in the notification drawer. This allows you to quickly enable or disable it.

Nacho Notch doesn’t work on the lock screen so the notch should still be visible there.

To use the Nacho Notch app, follow these steps:

1. Install the Nacho Notch app.
2. Go to the quick settings, look for the ‘Hide notch’ icon and add it to the list.
3. Toggle the setting on and off to see if it works.
4. Done!
