How to remove or hide the notch on Essential Phone PH-1

Hiding the notch on Essential Phone PH-1 is easy. Like in most Android phones that sport a notch, there are two ways to do it. For those who don’t have an idea what a notch is, it’s the circle on top of the screen that houses the selfie or front-facing camera. Check out the two methods below and pick the one that fits you best.

Method 1: Remove or hide the notch on Essential Phone PH-1 under Settings menu

This is your first option if you find the notch on your device annoying or unwanted. The Settings option was originally released when the phone first arrived. However, after a certain update, this same option was taken away for some reason. Obviously, the move backfired when fans realized it so it was obviously returned recently. If you are a first time user and don’t know how to hide the notch, follow the steps below.

  1. Open Settings app.
  2. Tap System.
  3. Tap Developer options.
  4. Tap Essential notch settings.
  5. You should see three options: Essential recommended, Don’t use notch area in landscape, and Always use the notch area
  6. Pick Always use the notch area option if you don’t want to see the notch.

If you don’t see Developer options, it means that you need to enable it first. Here’s how:

  1. Open Settings app.
  2. Tap About phone.
  3. Tap on build number at least 10 times (or more).
  4. Enter your device’s PIN, Password, or pattern.

Keep in mind that this option is artificial (software level only) and won’t remove the physical component from the screen. Even if you use Always use the notch area option, some apps may not observe this software setting and may show the notch again. While Always use the notch area option is ideally set for global default setting, it may not work if you use some apps, or when using your device to do certain tasks.

Method 2: Remove or hide the notch on Essential Phone PH-1 using an app

The second method of hiding the notch is with the help of a third party app like Nacho Notch. This is a free app that you can download from the Play Store. It’s dedicated purpose is, you guessed it, hide the notch. There are other similar apps as well so if you don’t want Nacho Notch, just use a different one.

Unlike the built-in option to hide the notch, Nacho Notch will not make the spaces around the notch useless. It leaves the status bar around it usable, allowing notifications and icons to continue showing up at the top. To make it easier to use, you can put a Nacho Notch quick settings tile in the notification drawer. This allows you to quickly enable or disable it.

Nacho Notch doesn’t work on the lock screen so the notch should still be visible there.

To use the Nacho Notch app, follow these steps:

  1. Install the Nacho Notch app.
  2. Go to the quick settings, look for the ‘Hide notch’ icon and add it to the list.
  3. Toggle the setting on and off to see if it works.
  4. Done!
