How to troubleshoot Galaxy Note 9 with WiFi connection that keeps dropping

To ensure that the problem you’re dealing with is not isolated to the browser app you’re using, try to use other browser available. If you’re experiencing random disconnects or Wi-Fi drops using the stock or built-in browser app on your Galaxy Note 9, then try to use Google Chrome browser or other credible apps to browse the Internet. If the problem occurs regardless of the browser app in use, then try these subsequent solutions to troubleshoot and clear out software problems on your device. Don’t forget to test your Internet connection after performing each method to find out if the problem is fixed or not.

First solution: Reboot wireless router/modem then soft reset your phone.

Firmware issues on the network equipment may also trigger this symptom to occur. It’s the very source of your Internet connection, so expect all connected devices to experience the same symptom. To rule this out, reboot the wireless router/modem can help. Here’s how to reboot/power cycle a wireless router/modem:

  1. Find and then press and hold the Power button or switch on your wireless router or modem until it powers off.
  2. When it’s turned off, unplug the adapter from the power source.
  3. After a minute or two, plug it back into the power source.
  4. If necessary, press the Power button to turn the wireless router/modem back on.

Wait until all the light indicators become stable. If you see a red light on the signal or Wi-Fi indicator, wait until it turns back to its normal color (green or blue). A red light usually indicates a problem like no signal or no network connection.

When the wireless router/modem has rebooted completely, restart/soft reset your Galaxy Note 9 with these steps;

  1. Press and hold the Volume Down button and Power button simultaneously for about 10 to 20 seconds or until the Samsung logo shows up on the screen.
  2. Release both buttons when the Samsung logo appears.

A soft reset clears minor software errors that may have caused conflict to your phone’s wireless functions and eventually resulted to random disconnections.

Second solution: Disconnect then reconnect to your Wi-Fi network.

Another simple way of refreshing wireless connection on your phone is by disconnecting from and then reconnecting to your Wi-Fi network. Here’s how:

  1. Slide down the Notification panel from a Home screen.
  2. Tap the Wi-Fi icon to disable Wi-Fi on your phone.
  3. After a few seconds, tap the Wi-Fi icon again to enable the feature and reconnect to your Wi-Fi network.

You can also access and configure Wi-Fi through settings menu. Here’s how:

  1. Tap Apps from the Home screen.
  2. Tap Settings.
  3. Tap Wi-Fi.
  4. Toggle the Wi-Fi switch off and on.

Wait until your phone reconnects to your Wi-Fi network and when it’s connected, do some test browsing to find out if the Wi-Fi connection is already stable.

Third solution: Forget Wi-Fi network on your phone.

Deleting the Wi-Fi network may be necessary if the problem is attributed to a corrupted Wi-Fi network. Doing so will remove the Wi-Fi network from your phone’s saved wireless connections, thus lets your device connect to the network like the first time it does. Here’s how to delete or forget Wi-Fi network on your Galaxy Note 9:

  1. Tap to open the Apps menu.
  2. Tap Settings.
  3. Tap Wi-Fi. Make sure Wi-Fi is turned on, otherwise, tap the switch to turn Wi-Fi on. A list of available Wi-Fi networks will then populate on the screen.
  4. Tap and hold your Wi-Fi network from the list.
  5. Then select the option to Forget or Forget network. The selected Wi-Fi network will then be deleted.
  6. Reboot your phone after deleting your Wi-Fi network and then head back to Settings-> Wi-Fi menu then reconnect to your Wi-Fi network.

Once you’re phone is reconnected, test and see if the Internet connection is already stable.

Fourth solution: Reset network settings on your phone.

Invalid or incorrect network settings on the phone may also result to on and off Wi-Fi Internet connection. This usually occurs when a system update is installed and that update is programmed to automatically override settings on the receiving device. There’s a chance that the changes caused some conflicts and triggered the symptoms. To clear this out, reset network settings on your Galaxy Note 9 with these steps:

  1. Tap to open Settings app.
  2. Go to General management section.
  3. Tap Reset.
  4. Select Reset network settings from the given options.
  5. If prompted, enter your device password or PIN to continue.
  6. Then tap Reset settings to confirm.

If necessary, reboot/soft reset your phone after the network settings reset is complete. As soon as your phone boots up, set up your Wi-Fi network then reconnect your device.

Fifth solution: Factory data reset/master reset your phone.

Among the last options to consider if the problem continues after exhausting all applicable solutions would be a master reset or factory data reset on the Galaxy Note 9. This will wipe everything from the phone system including fatal system errors, invalid settings, and corrupted apps that may have inflicted intermittent Wi-Fi connection on the phone. If you wish to continue with a master reset, back up all your important data so you can restore them later when needed. Then follow these steps to reset and restore your Galaxy Note 9 to its factory default settings:

  • Tap to open the Settings app.
  • Navigate to Cloud and accounts.
  • Tap the option to Backup and restore then turn on Back up my data and Restore options, if necessary.
  • Go back to Settings-> General management menu.
  • Then tap Reset.
  • Select Factory data reset from the given options.
  • Then tap Reset device.
  • If prompted, enter your password or PIN to continue.
  • Then tap Delete all to confirm reset.

Set up and reconnect your phone to your Wi-Fi network after the factory data reset. Any software-related network problems including intermittent wireless connection should be gone by then.

Other options

For more advanced network troubleshooting, contact your Internet service provider’s technical support or Samsung Support. If necessary, you can ask them to refresh your wireless router or modem using a dedicated tool or network software on their end.

If you suspect that the problem is attributed to hardware damage on the wireless router/modem, then you can take your equipment to a service center for hardware assessment. Or you can contact the router/modem manufacturer for further recommendations.
