How to fix duplicate texts issue on LG V40 ThinQ

Are you getting duplicate texts issue on LG V40 ThinQ? You’re in luck as that’s exactly what we’re trying to address in this article. Find out the solutions that you can try to know and fix this problem.

What to do if you keep getting duplicate texts on LG V40 ThinQ

We’ve been getting some letters from some LG V40 users having issues with duplicate messages. Here’s one typical example of that:

I have been getting duplicate text messages coming from Chomps app. This is a new phone that I got in November, 2018 and was having the same problem with my old phone which was a LG V20. I know it’s not a carrier related issue because I deleted 3rd party apps and was using stock apps, Message and Message+, and didn’t have any problems. Also used them while in safe mode and no issues found. One time I got same messages 14 times all at once. I’ve tried clearing out cache and data in Chomps. Even used other 3rd party app and got same duplicate text results. Any reason why 3rd party apps would be doing this? I do know that it seems that the stock apps, one mostly, still looks for updates and have to force stopping it. Not sure if that is the reason why I would be getting dups. They are disabled where they are not receiving texts too just the app I am using receives them. Any help would be appreciated!!

Troubleshooting this kind of issue is not straightforward and requires a number of steps to fix. Learn what you can do in this case by following our suggestions below.

Forced restart

Refreshing the system should be the very first thing that you want to do. Basically, you want to simulate the effects of a “battery pull” in order to clear the memory (RAM) as well as to refresh the entire system. Temporary bugs that develop when a device is left running for a long time are sometimes fixed this way. In case you haven’t tried this, follow the steps below:

  1. Press and hold the Power + Volume Down buttons for approximately 10 seconds or until the device power cycles. Allow several seconds for the Maintenance Boot Mode screen to appear.
  2. From the Maintenance Boot Mode screen, select Normal Boot. You can use the volume buttons to cycle through the available options and the lower left button (below the volume buttons) to select. Wait for up to 90 seconds for the reset to complete.

Clear cache partition

Android uses a set of temporary files called system cache to load apps. Sometimes, this cache gets corrupted, which can then lead to performance issues and other problems. To check if your device has a system cache issue, we suggest that you clear the cache partition. Here’s how:

  1. From the Home screen, tap Settings.
  2. Tap the General tab.
  3. Tap Storage.
  4. Tap Internal storage.
  5. Wait for menu options to finish calculating.
  6. Tap Free up space.
  7. Tap Temporary files & raw files.
  8. Select the following options:
    • Cached data
    • Clip tray temporary files
    • Raw files from camera
  9. Tap Delete.
  10. Tap DELETE.
  11. Restart the device and check for the problem.

Delete old conversations

If you seem to be only getting duplicate texts or messages from a certain number or contact, it’s possible that there may be a bug associated with that particular conversation. The best way to figure out if that’s true is by deleting that thread. This forces the phone to create a new thread and hopefully fix the bug as well. Aside from that, it also clears some storage space the app may need for other actions.

Clear app cache

There might be a problem with the app you’re using. In order to troubleshoot that app, you want to clear its cache first. Like Android, apps use a set of temporary files called cache in order to work efficiently. When this cache gets corrupted or outdated, it can cause problems like the one you’re experiencing

  1. Open Settings app.
  2. Tap Apps & notifications.
  3. Tap App info.
  4. Find your messaging app and tap it.
  5. Tap Storage.
  6. Tap Clear cache. This option may not be available for some apps. If there’s no button to clear the cache on your messaging app, proceed to the next troubleshooting below.
  7. Restart the device
  8. Check for the problem.

Revert messaging app to defaults

Sometimes, it takes a more drastic step to fix a messaging app issue. If nothing works after clearing the messaging app’s cache, make sure to delete the app’s data. This will return the app to its factory state. It will also delete all your texts and MMS. Be sure to back them up ahead of time if you don’t want to lose them.

Follow the steps below to clear LG V40 ThinQ app data:

  1. Open Settings app.
  2. Tap Apps & notifications.
  3. Tap App info.
  4. Find your messaging app and tap it.
  5. Tap Storage.
  6. Tap Clear data.
  7. Restart the device
  8. Check for the problem.

Check for bad third party app

If you’re using stock messaging app or the default LG messaging app, then it’s possible that the problem may be caused by a bad third party app. To check, try booting the phone to safe mode and see what happens. Here’s how to do that:

  1. With the screen on, press and hold the Power key.
  2. In the options menu that displays, press and hold Power off.
  3. When prompted to restart in Safe Mode, tap OK.
  4. After your device restarts, it displays Safe mode at the bottom of the screen.
  5. Observe the phone for a few days and check for the problem.

While you’re LG V40 ThinQ is on safe mode, all third party apps will be suspended. This means that any app you downloaded can’t be used. So, if your messages work normally and there are no duplicates when your phone’s on safe mode, that means a third party app is the culprit. To identify the erratic app:

  1. Boot your LG V40 ThinQ to safe mode.
  2. Observe the phone and check for the problem.
  3. If the problem won’t happen that’s an indication that you have a bad app problem.
  4. Uninstall an app that you think may be causing the problem.
  5. After you uninstall an app, restart the phone to normal mode and check for the problem .
  6. If MMS is still not working, repeat steps 1-5.

Reset network settings

Clearing your device’s network settings is a staple troubleshooting step for any network problem. Here’s how it’s done:

  1. Open Settings app.
  2. Tap System.
  3. Tap Restart & reset.
  4. Tap Network settings reset.
  5. Tap RESET SETTINGS.
  6. Tap Reset Settings.

Factory reset

A more drastic troubleshooting step may be needed to fix the problem. If none of the steps above have helped so far, consider wiping the device by doing a factory reset. This will revert all software settings to their defaults, hopefully clearing the bug that causes the problem.

  1. Back up all data on the internal memory before performing a master reset.
  2. Turn off the device.
  3. Press and hold the Power and Volume down buttons.
  4. When the LG logo appears, quickly release and then re-hold the Power button while continuing to hold the Volume down button.
  5. When the ‘Delete all user data (including LG and carrier apps) and reset all settings’ message appears, use the Volume down button to highlight Yes.
  6. Press the Power button to reset the device.

Try a new app

If the problem is still unresolved at this point, you should consider trying out a new messaging app. There may be coding issue with the current app. Unfortunately, there’s nothing much that you can do about it. What you can do though is to replace the said app with a possibly working one. There are many good alternatives that you can use. You can start with Google’s own Android Messages.

Contact your network operator

Should none of the troubleshooting above won’t work, the last thing that you must do is to tell your network operator about it. There may be an account- or network-related issue causing the problem. These are usually beyond your ability to do something about.
