Google Officially Confirms the Arrival of Google Play Pass

There have been multiple reports about the arrival of Google Play Pass. This is expected to compete with Apple Arcade, which is a gaming subscription service that includes premium games without ads or in-app purchases. Google has just made an announcement on Twitter, confirming that Play Pass is coming soon.

While Google’s offering is expected to be the same, it is being speculated that Play Pass will also include premium apps as well. Perhaps this is what Google can do to differentiate its offering from Apple’s.

Unfortunately, Google hasn’t clarified when this service will be announced, but one can speculate that Google will unveil this during the Pixel 4 announcement, slated to take place in October. But the mention of “it’s almost time” in the tweet suggests that we’re closer to the launch of Play Pass than expected.

Ads and in-app purchases are annoyances that every user has to deal with. But by offering a subscription service that has no hidden caveats and just offers users what they want, Google could finally appeal to users who are willing to pay in return for not seeing ads or pop-ups for in-app purchases. It will be interesting to see how Apple Arcade matches up with Google’s offering. Apple is expected to announce the new iPhones while also shedding some light on Apple Arcade later today at Steve Jobs Theater within the Apple Park campus.
