Differences Between Moto G7 vs G7 Play, G7 Power and G7 Plus

Motorola announced four new smartphones in its Moto G7 lineup in February this year. However, with all phones carrying a similar name with some differentiating monikers, it can be hard for the regular user to understand the key differences between these variants. This is not the first time Moto has done this, and it certainly won’t be the last. Since all four smartphones are available officially in the U.S., we decided to help you understand what makes these four devices stand apart from each other.

Moto G7

Design

The Moto G7 was the first of the four to arrive on the scene, although some markets got other variants first. This phone packs an all-glass design on the front, which means it also accommodates a hole-punch camera. Further, the back panel is also made of glass, which adds to the premium appeal of the smartphone. It is held together with a plastic frame, which is understandable given that this is still a mid-range offering.

Features and Performance

In terms of hardware, the Moto G7 is quite blessed. It’s packing a 6.2-inch 2270 x 1080 resolution IPS LCD panel. You also get Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 632 octa-core chipset, accompanied by 4GB of RAM and 64GB of expandable storage (up to 1TB). The phone uses a dual-camera layout on the back, consisting of a 12MP sensor and a 5MP depth focusing sensor for bokeh images. On the front, the Moto G7 has an 8MP front camera.

It comes with a rear-mounted fingerprint scanner, which is located on the Moto logo. Other features include Dolby Audio, Bluetooth 4.2, and a reversible USB C port, which offers high-speed battery charging. Speaking of which, the Moto G7 packs a 3,000 mAh battery with 15W fast charging support (adapter included). As you can see, the Moto G7 is not your ordinary mid-ranger.

Availability

The smartphone can be purchased from multiple retailers in the U.S., including the likes of Amazon, Walmart, and even Moto’s official website. Prices may differ depending on where you get the phone, however. Amazon currently offers the Moto G7 in Clear White, Ceramic Black, and Deep Indigo.

Moto G7 Play

Design

The G7 Play was launched in March and featured a slightly different rear panel design, especially in comparison to the Moto G7 and the G7 Plus. As was apparent during the launch, this was a budget ranged offering with a significantly toned down hardware specs sheet. The front panel is also quite different here, with Moto going with a notch design in favor of the hole-punch camera. So there are quite a few distinctive markers between the Moto G7 and the Moto G7 Play. The handset also ditches the glass back in favor of plastic, which helps Moto keep the cost down.

Features and Performance

The hardware specs sheet includes a 5.7-inch 1512 x 720 resolution LCD screen. The G7 Play runs the popular Snapdragon 632 octa-core chipset, which is coupled with 2GB of RAM and 32GB of expandable storage (up to 1TB). There are no dual-cameras here with Moto sticking for a single 13MP unit on the back. The front houses an 8MP sensor, which also has its own LED flash for selfies. The same rear mounted fingerprint scanner can be found on the Moto G7 Play as well.

Rounding off the specs sheet is Bluetooth 4.2, Android 9.0 Pie, a USB C port, and a 3,000 mAh battery with support for 10W fast charging. Moto claims that the Moto G7 Play can last up to 40 hours on a single charge, which is pretty remarkable considering the battery life of modern-day smartphones.

As with the Moto G7, the G7 Play also offers customized Moto features and gestures that allow you to turn on device-related features (like the flashlight) with a swipe on your screen.

Availability

The unlocked variant of the Moto G7 Play can be purchased on Amazon. This variant is officially compatible with Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Boost, Cricket, and Metro networks. As of now, only the Deep Indigo version of the handset appears to be in stock.

Moto G7 Power

Design

This handset closely resembles the Moto G7 Play, although this features a significantly more prominent display. This phone uses plastic on the back and a glass panel on the front with a notch. However, Moto isn’t using an LED flash here, sticking to a single selfie camera. So as far as the design is concerned, the Moto G7 Power seems like a slightly bigger version of the G7 Play.=

Features and Performance

This handset features a massive 6.2-inch 1570 x 720 resolution IPS panel with Corning’s Gorilla Glass 3 for resistance against scratching and scuffing. It also features Qualcomm’s octa-core 14nm Snapdragon 632 chipset, which is the same variant as one used on the Moto G7 Play. While some European versions come with 64GB of storage and 4GB of RAM, the American variants only have 32GB of onboard storage and 3GB of RAM. The storage is expandable using a microSD, though.

In the camera department, the G7 Power features a slightly advanced 12MP single PDAF rear camera as well as the 8MP front camera, which appears to be the same unit as on the G7 Play.  All the standard features like Bluetooth 4.2, a rear-mounted fingerprint scanner are in place here. The phone runs Android 9.0 Pie and is likely to receive the Android Q update sometime in the future.

The real highlight of the Moto G7 Power is the massive 5,000 mAh battery underneath. It also comes with a 15W fast charger to juice up your phone in no time. Moto claims that this battery can run for almost 60 hours, making this one of the most extended-lasting smartphones available today. Given the capacity it offers, it would be great if Moto could somehow enable reverse charging, i.e. charge other devices using the onboard battery. The technology is out there, and companies like Huawei have already tried it out.

Availability

The Moto G7 Power can be bought from a variety of retail channels. However, getting it through Amazon is recommended since it appears to offer great deals on the device. You only get to choose from one color, though – Marine Blue. This model is unlocked to work with all major U.S. carriers, including Verizon, AT&T, T-Mobile, etc.

Moto G7 Plus

Design

The company’s naming scheme is quite confusing, to be honest. I say this because the Moto G7 Plus packs pretty much the same display as the Moto G7, so there’s no real size difference here. However, the Moto G7 Plus appears to be around 0.3mm thicker than the standard Moto G7. It’s also heavier by four grams, which really wouldn’t make much of a difference to the customers.

Features and Performance

Jumping to the hardware specifications of the Moto G7 Plus, the 6.2-inch 2270 x 1080 display is retained here, which is accompanied by a slightly faster Qualcomm Snapdragon 636 processor. It also packs 64GB of expandable storage and 4GB of RAM, so nothing different in this area either.

The Moto G7 Plus shines in the camera department, however. While it also has a dual-camera layout, the sensors are different. A primary sensor is a 16MP unit on this phone, while the 5MP depth sensor appears to be the same. The front also features an upgraded sensor with a 12MP unit in place of the 8MP sensor. Moto is also packing stereo speakers with this smartphone, thus giving some weight to the “Plus” moniker.

Other features like the rear-mounted fingerprint scanner, Android 9.0 Pie, and the reversible USB C connector are in place here. Interestingly, this phone also brings Bluetooth 5.0, a feature that’s exclusive to this device in the lineup. The phone comes with a 3,000 mAh battery, which can charge up in no time thanks to the 27W fast charging adapter supplied by the company. The phone is also compatible with Quick Charge 4 and USB Power Delivery 3.0 standards.

Availability

The Moto G7 Plus can be purchased from several online retailers today, including Moto’s website. The smartphone is available in Red and Deep Indigo variants, although the availability of stocks is constantly fluctuating. Strangely, this variant is currently cheaper on Amazon than the Moto G7. However, this model is the international variant and lacks warranty.

Verdict

When it comes to hardware prowess, it’s quite clear that the Moto G7 Plus is the best phone of the lot. This is not only due to the snappy cameras, but also the low price that it’s currently selling for. If you’re looking for a no-compromise smartphone that will offer you the best in almost every aspect, it’s tough to beat the Moto G7 Plus. Alternatively, I recommend checking out the Moto G7 Power thanks to its mammoth battery life and capacity.
