Problem #1: Galaxy S7 keeps saying it detected moisture

Hey there. I got my Samsung Galaxy S7 about a year ago and I’ve been having problems with it regarding that moisture detection. This time is the worst. Won’t charge at all despite doing everything even if it didn’t get wet or exposed to moisture. I tried pressing the volume down key, power and home buttons and it only asks me whether I want to change my OS. And so I pressed OK and 5 hours after nothing changed. What could be the problem? Hope to hear from you. — Denise

Solution: Hi Denise. Part of protection layer against moisture or water damage is the specially built lower part of your phone, particularly in the charging port area. The charging port is designed to resist water or moisture from leaking inside. In some cases, moisture can remain hidden even after a user has cleaned and dried the phone. If the system detects such moisture, it won’t allow data transfer or charging via USB cable. If your phone has been saying that it’s detected moisture and won’t charge, it probably does. Otherwise, the charging port may be malfunctioning.

Keep in  mind that even just a tiny droplet of water or liquid can trip the built-in moisture detection system so you want to make sure that your phone’s charging port is thoroughly dried. Try using a hair dryer to blow hot air in the port and see if that will make a difference. Be sure not to apply too much heat that might damage the phone though. If this drying method won’t fix the issue, there may be a charging port problem so you must contact Samsung and have the phone repaired or replaced.

Problem #2: Galaxy S7 edge off eBay won’t turn on, screen remains black

Bought my first phone today, off EBay. S7 Edge. Showed battery at 72% but icons page wouldn’t come on or home page. Charged to 100%. Turned off. Now can’t even get the battery icon page to show. Has no SIM card but that doesn’t matter. I think the last user may have downloaded Nougat or something, had problems, just put it on EBay but that’s a guess. Maybe they wiped hard drive clean, who knows? Don’t understand why the battery or charging page would work the 5-10 times I checked and won’t open up now though…just a black screen phone. Try to return this or think you can walk me through repair? $380.00’s not bad. No cracks in screen or anything, looks mint. You’re asking what version it has, I have no way to know since I can’t turn it on. No carrier as that I have no sim card yet. — Eddie

Solution: Hi Eddie. The only thing that you can do here is to try to restart the phone to alternate boot modes so you can do follow up troubleshooting. If the phone remains unresponsive or won’t turn on at all, save yourself a few hundred dollars and get a refund.

For reference, here are the ways on how to boot your phone to alternate modes:

Boot in Recovery mode:

  1. Charge the phone for at least 30 minutes.
  2. Press and then hold the Home and Volume UP keys, then press and hold the Power key.
  3. When the Samsung Galaxy S7 shows on the screen, release the Power key but continue holding the Home and Volume Up keys.
  4. When the Android logo shows, you may release both keys and leave the phone be for about 30 to 60 seconds.
  5. Using the Volume Down key, navigate through the options and highlight ‘wipe cache partition.’
  6. You can either wipe the cache partition or do a factory reset when in this mode.

Boot in Download Mode:

  1. Charge the phone for at least 30 minutes.
  2. Press and then hold the Home and Volume DOWN keys, then press and hold the Power key.
  3. When the Samsung Galaxy S7 shows on the screen, release the Power key but continue holding the Home and Volume DOWN keys.
  4. Wait until the Download screen appears.
  5. If you can boot the phone in download mode but not in other modes, that means that your only way out may be to flash a stock or custom firmware.
  6. Use Google to look for a guide on how to do it.

Boot in safe mode:

  1. Charge the phone for at least 30 minutes.
  2. Press and hold the Power button.
  3. Once the ‘Samsung Galaxy S7’ logo appears, release the Power key and immediately press and hold the Volume Down button.
  4. Continue holding the button until the phone finishes rebooting.
  5. Once you see the text “Safe mode” at the bottom left corner of the screen, release the Volume Down button.
  6. The only difference of safe mode from normal mode is that the former prevents third party apps from running. If you can boot the phone in safe mode but not in normal mode, uninstall all apps until the issue (that prevents you from booting normally) is eliminated.

Problem #3: Galaxy S7 can’t save files to a 64GB SD card

Hello. A few months back I bought a 64 GB card for it because well let’s face I have a lot of media on the device and needed the extra storage. In the beginning the phone wasn’t reading the card and it was a nightmare but i was able to correct that issue. My current issue is the following… I moved (not copied, which i should of), a lot of the media that was on my phone storage to the card and now when i go to those files, the display is a light gray screenshot with an exclamation point in the middle. I know that’s because the file isn’t being read properly. The specs for the media file shows everything, file type, size, name, etc. Also, these files weren’t moved to new folders, but existing folders that already had media saved on it. I can still see the media that was already on the card but not the new stuff i transferred onto it yesterday which is very frustrating. I tried to connect the card to my computer and the computer can’t read the new files either. What can I do to save these files? I already tried the “unmount”, “mount” option and that didn’t work and I didn’t lose any files in that process either which was a good thing I guess. Please assist. Thanks in advance. — Ana

Solution: Hi Ana. Troubleshooting an issue like this does not require advanced steps and only requires common sense ones. Firstly, we want to make it clear that there’s nothing more that you can do if files have become corrupted after you transferred them. Those files that show exclamation marks on them may still retain the metadata or the file specs as you call them but they have already lost critical bits and pieces to read each one as a whole file. If you chose “move” instead of “copy” during the transfer, you may have lost those files for good.

Secondly, the main cause of the problem may lie on the SD card so you want to check if that’s the case. Get a new, known working SD card and format it using your S7. After that, try to replicate the problem by moving or copying files to it. Do the same step several times. If data transfer is successful all the time, that means there’s no issue with the phone and the problem must be on your first SD card. To fix it, simply replace the card and save yourself the hassle. Sure you can try to reformat it but there’s no guarantee that the issue won’t return after that. If you don’t want to invest in a new SD card at this time, consider reformatting the one you have on your phone but be sure not to use it as your main backup storage. Bear in mind that even the most expensive SD card or any digital storage device can fail anytime. If you’ll lose irreplaceable files in the future because you did not create a backup, you only have yourself to blame.

Problem #4: Galaxy S7 not saving pictures to Gallery, charges very slowly

My Samsung S7 screen keys are locked while I am not using a password, the device:

  • does not save pictures to the Gallery (gallery file always empty) “saved to device!, where, I do not know ???!!
  • the incoming messages to WhatsApp stop to be received with a notification alarm sound
  • Sometimes the battery charging consume very long time, comes to 10 hours!

Is it possible that a virus strike my device? Or a Hacker may be behind? I realized that all of these troubles take place after I downloaded a Power Saving Program named “Turbo power saving ” – already I deleted but problems still remaining. Please advise.  — Mariner1015

Solution: Hi Mariner1015. Like you, we can’t tell if this issue is due to a virus or malware. We don’t have enough details about your phone’s history and information about things running on it right now.

To try to fix the issue, you must do a factory reset and see what happens afterwards. By doing a factory reset, you are restoring all software and app settings to their defaults so any changes you or the malware may have done to core files should be corrected. Here’s how to factory reset your S7:

  1. Create a backup of your important files such as photos, videos, etc.
  2. Turn off your Samsung Galaxy S7.
  3. Press and then hold the Home and Volume UP keys, then press and hold the Power key.
  4. When the Samsung Galaxy S7 shows on the screen, release the Power key but continue holding the Home and Volume Up keys.
  5. When the Android logo shows, you may release both keys and leave the phone be for about 30 to 60 seconds.
  6. Using the Volume Down key, navigate through the options and highlight ‘wipe data / factory reset.’
  7. Once highlighted, you may press the Power key to select it.
  8. Now highlight the option ‘Yes — delete all user data’ using the Volume Down key and press the Power button to select it.
  9. Wait until your phone is finished doing the Master Reset. Once completed, highlight ‘Reboot system now’ and press the Power key.
  10. The phone will now reboot longer than usual.

Problem #5: Can’t set notifications for Galaxy S7 Hotmail email

Hi. My husband and I are not very “techy” when it comes to phones. He has recently purchased a S7 Edge and we thought we had done everything right setting it all up. His main email address is @hotmail.co.uk which he is using through Gmail. We are trying to put a specific notification on it for when he receives email but this seems impossible. We appear only to be able to do this with the Gmail account he had to set up. Is there any way we can do this or is it just that Hotmail and Gmail don’t “talk” to each other ? Thank you for your help. — Kim

Solution: Hi Kim. We don’t think we understand your question fully so kindly get back to us if you think our interpretation is incorrect.

As far as setting notifications in Android Marshmallow and Nougat is concerned, everything is outlined clearly in Settings>Notifications. As far as email notifications under Gmail app is concerned, your only option is to either turn it on or off under the app’s own settings menu.

Problem #6: Galaxy S7 Gallery app acting up when deleting a photo

Hi. Recently I’ve been having this problem which I noticed today. When I go into my gallery and delete a picture or two, when I swipe to the next picture, my screen suddenly twitches out and goes back to the picture. By twitching I mean the screen moves side to side and moves on to the next picture. I was wondering what might have caused it because I once pressed down on my screen which made my screen touch the amoled panel. I wasn’t sure if that was the reason. Please reply and help, thank you. — Imran

Solution: Hi Imran. There may be an app bug causing the problem. To fix it, make sure to clear the cache and data of the Gallery app. Before you proceed with this step, make sure that you create a backup of your photos and videos.

  1. Open the Settings menu either through your notification shade (drop-down) or through the Settings app in your app drawer.
  2. Navigate down to “Apps”. This may be renamed to something like Applications or Application Manager in OEM skinned versions of Android 6.0.
  3. Once in there, click on an application.
  4. You’ll now see a list of stuff that gives you information about the app, including Storage, Permissions, Memory Use, and more. These are all clickable items. You’ll want to click on Storage.
  5. You should now clearly see the Clear Data and Clear Cache buttons for the application.

If nothing changes after clearing the cache and data, do a factory reset. Steps are provided above.

Problem #7: Galaxy S7 splitting long SMS

Hey. So I was reading your article on how to fix the problem of receiving texts and them being split up if they are too long. Well, sadly, your guide appears to be outdated now. You say to go to apps, messages, more settings, texts, and then enable an option that combines the texts. This option is no longer available or my phone simply does not have it there (unlocked carrier US Galaxy S7 Edge running the latest update). — Greenfox1012

Solution: Hi Greenfox1012. Android in general and carrier-provided firmware in particular constantly evolves so some settings may change, removed, or placed somewhere else. Due to logistical challenges, we can’t regularly keep track of our solutions so we can modify them so we apologize for any inconvenience the post you read may have caused you. We encourage you though to get back to us by giving us a more detailed problem description and we will do our best to help you.

Problem #8: Galaxy S7 edge “No subject” error when receiving SMS, cannot send and receive MMS

I use to own an iPhone 5s and now I switched to a S7 edge, and I am experiencing a messaging problem on my phone. I have been constantly getting “No Subject” errors whenever I get a message, and I also can’t send or receive photos. I got the S7 edge for my birthday from my uncle who doesn’t use it anymore. My number is not registered with iMessage by the way. Please Help. — Jonathan

Solution: Hi Jonathan. This may be a messaging app problem so the first troubleshooting step that you want to do is to clear its cache and data, just like what we suggest for Imran above.

If that won’t fix the problem, you can also try to wipe the cache partition. Here’s how:

  1. Turn off your Samsung Galaxy S7.
  6. Once highlighted, you may press the Power key to select it.
  7. Now highlight the option ‘Yes’ using the Volume Down key and press the Power button to select it.
  8. Wait until your phone is finished doing the Master Reset. Once completed, highlight ‘Reboot system now’ and press the Power key.
  9. The phone will now reboot longer than usual.

If both of these procedures won’t solve the issue at all, contact your carrier and ask them for direct assistance. The error may be  caused by a firmware bug, which means it involves changing the code of the operating system.

You also need their assistance in ensuring that your phone is properly configured to send and receive MMS.
