Step-by-step guide on how to troubleshoot Galaxy J7 that’s stuck on boot screen

The purpose of this troubleshooting guide is for us to know what the problem is all about and why the phone cannot continue booting up to the home screen. Once we know the reason or cause, we can then formulate a solution that may fix the problem and prevent it from happening again in the future. Before we go to the steps, here’s one of the messages we received from our readers that best describes this problem…

Problem: Hey guys! How are you? I am reaching out to you now since I’ve encountered issues with my phone, which is a Galaxy J7. I don’t know if you also provide support for this phone but I want to share my problem anyway. The phone gets stuck on a black screen after the logo during the boot up process. It started a couple of days ago and I don’t have a clue as to what caused it to act this way. I tried rebooting it a hundred times already to no avail. So, I need your help if you can. Thanks.

Troubleshooting: Now that we know how this problem occurs and what the behavior of the phone is, it’s time we begin with our troubleshooting. Here’s what you should do…

Step 1: Pull the battery out while the phone is powered on

We often refer to this procedure as “power shock” and it refreshes the phone’s memory while draining stored electricity in some of its components. We suggest you do this as based on our experiences, glitches may cause the phone not to boot up successfully.

So, while the phone is still powered on, remove the back panel and then pull the battery out. While the battery is separated from the main unit, press and hold the Power key of your device for a minute. Replace the battery and then secure it with the back cover. After which, attempt to boot the phone up. If the problem persists, then move on to the next step.

Step 2: Delete all system caches so they’ll be replaced with new ones

There are times when system caches get corrupted and when they do, various issues may occur including this one. We need to rule out this possibility before moving on to the next step and to do that, you just have to start your phone up in recovery mode and wipe cache partition.

  1. Turn off the device.
  2. Press and hold the Volume Up key and the Home key, then press and hold the Power key.
  3. When the device logo screen displays, release only the Power key
  4. When the Android logo displays, release all keys (‘Installing system update’ will show for about 30 – 60 seconds before showing the Android system recovery menu options).
  5. Press the Volume down key several times key to highlight ‘wipe cache partition.’
  6. Press the Power key to select.
  7. Press the Volume down key to highlight ‘yes’ and press the Power key to select.
  8. When the wipe cache partition is complete, ‘Reboot system now’ is highlighted.
  9. Press the Power key to restart the device.

Wait for the phone to boot up because it may take a little longer for it to recreate the caches. If, however, it’s still stuck on the boot screen, then try to do the next step.

Step 3: Attempt to boot your phone in Safe mode

Booting the phone in safe mode means you’re temporarily disabling all third-party apps. It is necessary that we rule out the possibility that one or some of the apps you downloaded and installed is causing the problem because if so, it would be easier to fix the problem and you would be saved from a lot of trouble. So, here’s how you start your J7 in safe mode:

  1. Power off your Galaxy J7. Press and hold the Power key, tap Power off and then touch POWER OFF to confirm.
  2. Press and hold the Power key past the screen with the device name.
  3. When ‘SAMSUNG’ appears on the screen, release the Power key.
  4. Immediately after releasing the Power key, press and hold the Volume down key.
  5. Continue to hold the Volume down key until the device finishes restarting.
  6. Safe mode will display in the bottom left corner of the screen.
  7. Release the Volume down key when you see ‘Safe Mode’.

If successful, then it’s confirmed and third-party apps have something to do with the problem. You need to find the culprit by installing suspected apps one by one until you can boot your phone up in normal mode. To uninstall an app, follow these steps:

  1. From any Home screen, tap the Apps icon.
  2. Tap Settings.
  3. Tap Applications.
  4. Tap Application manager.
  5. Tap the desired application
  6. Tap Uninstall.
  7. Tap Uninstall again to confirm.

You have to try to boot your phone in normal mode every after you uninstalled an app to confirm if the problem is fixed or not.

Step 4: Reset  your Galaxy J7 to bring it back to factory default settings

If the problem remains after doing the first three steps or if you find it easier and quicker to just backup your files and data and reset the phone than to uninstall every app you suspect to be the culprit, then you can do so at will.

But please take note that all your fiels and data will be deleted when you do this procedure and there’s a possibility you would be locked out of your phone after the reset especially if you don’t know your Google ID and password. So, make sure you create a backup of your important files and then don’t forget to disable anti-theft.

Disable anti-theft on Galaxy J7

  1. From the Home screen, tap the Apps icon.
  2. Tap Settings.
  3. Tap Accounts.
  4. Tap Google.
  5. Tap your Google ID email address. If you have multiple accounts setup, you will need to repeat these steps for each account.
  6. Tap More.
  7. Tap Remove account.
  8. Tap REMOVE ACCOUNT.

How to Master reset Galaxy J7

  5. Press the Volume down key several times key to highlight ‘wipe data / factory reset.’
  6. Press Power button to select.
  7. Press the Volume down key until ‘Yes — delete all user data’ is highlighted.
  8. Press Power button to select and start the master reset.
  9. When the master reset is complete, ‘Reboot system now’ is highlighted.
  10. Press the Power key to restart the device.

Alternatively, you can reset your phone via the Settings menu, that is if the phone can boot up in safe mode…

  1. Back up data on the internal memory. If you have signed into a Google account on the device, you have activated Anti-theft and will need your Google credentials to finish the Master reset.
  2. From the Home screen, tap the Apps icon.
  3. Tap Settings.
  4. Tap Backup and reset.
  5. If desired, tap Back up my data to move the slider to ON or OFF.
  6. If desired, tap Restore to move the slider to ON or OFF.
  7. Tap Factory data reset.
  8. Tap Reset device.
  9. If you have screen lock turned on, enter your PIN or password.
  10. Tap Continue.
  11. Tap Delete all.

After the reset, don’t restore your files nor install any apps yet. Instead, continue to observe your device to know if there are times when it fails to boot up successfully.

I hope this troubleshooting guide helps.
