Troubleshooting Galaxy J7 that keeps restarting on its own
Before we move on to our troubleshooting, here’s one of the problems we received from one of our readers that best describes this issue…
Problem: Hi, I am Prudence! My problem is with my Samsung J7 phone that keeps turning off and turning on by itself, even when the battery is on the good percentage. What should I do to stop this?
Troubleshooting: In dealing with this issue, there are number of reasons to consider why your Galaxy J7 is rebooting constantly. It could be an issue with the battery or one of its components or it could be a problem with the firmware itself. So, let’s find out why this is happening to your device by doing these procedures…
Check the Power key for it might be stuck or damaged
One good sign of a stuck power key is when the phone turns on normally and but powers down shortly after it has rebooted and without doing anything to it, it would turn back on and off again. The cycle never ends until the battery is drained.
Now, if you’ve put on a new case on your device, try to remove it to see if it makes a difference. Some third-party cases may interfere with the phone’s normal operation and that’s what we need to rule out here first.
Next, press the power key several times to see if it still snaps. A damaged power key doesn’t snap when you press it and if it’s stuck, then the external button will be too soft to press. Keep pressing the power key several times to see if it works properly and if it does but your device is still turning on and off by itself, move on to the next step.

Try charging the phone and continue using it
I understand your device may still has enough battery but we’ve not actually trying to charge your phone at this point. We simply want to know if it would still reboot on its own even if it has a stable power source. Why? Because we need to know if this is a battery problem or not before we proceed with our troubleshooting.
So, if it’s a battery problem, the device should work properly and won’t restart by itself when connected to its charger. In such case, there’s not much you can do but bring your device to the service center so that the tech can replace the battery. However, if you have the first version of this phone, then you can buy a new battery and replace it on your own since it has a removable battery.
If the phone still reboots even when connected to its charger, proceed to the next step.
Run your phone in Safe mode
Another possibility that we need to consider here is the fact that there could be apps that may cause the phone to not function properly. More often they’re third-party apps so you need to isolate the problem by running your device in safe mode. Follow these steps to do that:
- Turn the device off.
- Press and hold the Power key past the screen with the device name.
- When ‘SAMSUNG’ appears on the screen, release the Power key.
- Immediately after releasing the Power key, press and hold the Volume down key.
- Continue to hold the Volume down key until the device finishes restarting.
- Safe mode will display in the bottom left corner of the screen.
- Release the Volume down key when you see ‘Safe Mode’.
Continue observing your device while in this mode and if the problem is seems fixed, the next thing you should do is find the app that’s causing the issue and uninstall it or you may have to uninstall more than one app for this:
- From the Home screen, tap the Apps tray.
- Tap Settings > Apps.
- Tap the desired application in the default list or tap 3 dots icon > Show system apps to display pre-installed apps.
- Tap the desired application.
- Tap Uninstall.
- Tap Uninstall again to confirm.
Try to delete the system files and data
Most of the time, if system caches are outdated, the firmware will be having a hard time loading the core services which will lead to unstable performance. So, what we have to do now is to delete the old caches so that they will be replaced with ones. In order to do so, you just have to run your device in Recovery mode and wipe the cache partition:
- Turn off the device.
- Press and hold the Volume Up key and the Home key, then press and hold the Power key.
- When the device logo screen displays, release only the Power key
- When the Android logo displays, release all keys (‘Installing system update’ will show for about 30 – 60 seconds before showing the Android system recovery menu options).
- Press the Volume down key several times key to highlight ‘wipe cache partition.’
- Press the Power key to select.
- Press the Volume down key to highlight ‘yes’ and press the Power key to select.
- When the wipe cache partition is complete, ‘Reboot system now’ is highlighted.
- Press the Power key to restart the device.
Perform the master reset on your phone
If all procedures you performed on your phone failed to fix the problem, the last thing that you should do is reset it. Meaning, we have to delete everything in your phone including your personal files and data. This will give your device a fresh start and may fix all applications- and firmware related problems. But before you proceed and do the reset we recommend you to create a backup of your important files first so that you can easily restore them after the reset. Then don’t forget to disable the Factory Reset Protection by removing your google account from your phone so that you won’t be locked out of your device after the reset. Once everything is set and ready, follow these steps:
- Back up data on the internal memory. If you have signed into a Google account on the device, you have activated Anti-theft and will need your Google credentials to finish the Master reset.
- Turn off your Galaxy J7.
- Press and hold the Volume Up button and the Home key, then press and hold the Power key.
- When the device logo screen displays, release only the Power key
- When the Android logo displays, release all keys (‘Installing system update’ will show for about 30 – 60 seconds before showing the Android system recovery menu options).
- Press the Volume down key several times key to highlight ‘wipe data / factory reset.’
- Press Power button to select.
- Press the Volume down key until ‘Yes — delete all user data’ is highlighted.
- Press Power button to select and start the master reset.
- When the master reset is complete, ‘Reboot system now’ is highlighted.
- Press the Power key to restart the device.
I hope that this troubleshooting guide can help you fix the problem with your phone.
